shrader Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 Who with connections was run off? Bill Hoppe? You must be an old fart like me. If TP wants to reach that critical young demographic, he'd be smart to do it on their turf -- Twitter, Facebook, texting, AOL chat rooms and the like. :) Maybe I'm thinking of TSW where they constantly run off media members. Anyway, I stand by my idea that someone would eventually say stupid, then Pegula would get pissed and then move the franchise to Siberia, after a hydrofracking "accident" directly below the HSBC Arena. The twitters and facebooks of the world might be a better option than a messageboard. But ultimately, if you're going to go through the internet, wouldn't the team webpage be the furthest reaching option? So maybe some sort of weekly letter from the owner or something along those lines would be to your liking?
nucci Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 We should all thank Tom G. for 1) bailing out our favorite hockey team when it went bankrupt, 2) making it profitable again, and 3) lining up a filthy rich buyer when it was time for him to move on. Despite whatever has happened on the ice in the past couple of seasons, I can't harbor any hard feelings toward Mr. Golisano. He did a good thing for the community and I wish him the best. I don't think the Sabres are profitable http://www.buffalorising.com/2009/11/forbes-sabres-lose-money-8-of-past-9-seasons-now-worth-169m.html
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 If he posted here, we'd quickly run him off like we do to anyone with any connections. I know you won't like it due to your very well documented feelings about the media, but if they're ever going to talk with the fans, they'll do it through the media. This board may be great and all, but they reach far more people by going through tv and the paper. On that note, I always get the feeling that on this board we have a very high percentage of out-of-towners. A message board is never going to be a place representative of the fanbase as a whole, but in that regard, this place may be even less representative. I have no doubt that this place is on the radar of just about everyone in the Buffalo media. The smart ones use this place as a thinktank to either come up with ideas, or support a leaning they already had. You can see it in print, hear it on the radio. I know for a fact message boards and blogs are read by athletes, owners, PR guys, the whole thing. Maybe not every board in every sport, but remember, owners and players are fans as well. I don't know how many post, but more than a handful read. I do understand the point about out of towners. It seems they have a higher tolerance for bologna because they aren't dialed in as tight with local events, and nostalgia for Buffalo in general may paint things with a positive brush.
LabattBlue Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 I don't think the Sabres are profitable http://www.buffalorising.com/2009/11/forbes-sabres-lose-money-8-of-past-9-seasons-now-worth-169m.html It's all fuzzy math. Where is Forbes getting their numbers from and do they have access to open books? I doubt it.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 I don't think the Sabres are profitable http://www.buffalorising.com/2009/11/forbes-sabres-lose-money-8-of-past-9-seasons-now-worth-169m.html That's a joke. There is a difference between cash flow and accounting gain/loss. Depreciation is a huge aspect. You own a 5 year old arena and you are writing off millions a year on that thing. You don't pay actual dollars, but your asset is worth less in relative value. Also, you see how many companies are under the thumb of these clowns. Sabres, Bandits, MSG spinoff, Arena, etc. Sure "The Buffalo Sabres" may have "lost money", but that's because they ran the TV deal through Niagara Frontier LLC or some other entity and pocket a few million that way. They probably set up "World Juniors LLC" and pocketed money that way. Remember everyone saying how the Sabres made a flat fee on the tourney and I said BS? It's that type of stuff that goes on. I don't blame them for doing this because honest, aggressive accounting is fine. They just leave the fanbase to believe what they want them to see, knowing full well the majority will just read the headline number and have pity on their small market souls.
Stoner Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 I don't think the Sabres are profitable http://www.buffalori...worth-169m.html Who really knows? And who should really care? FWIW, Bucky wrote that Golisano made $30 million on the team in yearly profits, in addition to the sale windfall.

I have no doubt that they read it, but turning around and deciding to actually post there is another story all together. It's all too obvious now that there are a lot of people out there who are waiting to jump all over the comments of high profile people. Every time they open their mouths, they're taking the risk of putting their foot in there. It's not worth it.
cdexchange Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 Maybe he's been posting here for years and we don't even realize it. He's supposedly a big fan, right? Let's see...he's a Sabres fan from PA, with strong opinions on the team, and presumably with a disdain for the media. I wonder if there is anyone around here that fits that description....

I'm sure he, or someone involved in the pending royalty may make their way here from time to time.
henysgol Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 I have a question that applies to both of them: What feels better, money or having a couple million people love you?

korab rules Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 several of us got a bit geeky on this issue a while back (korab was in on it). i'm pretty sure that LQ was denominated a managing partner because he's a stakeholder (i.e., partner)in the company that's selling the team. if he no longer holds that stake, then he's no longer a partner, and can therefore no longer be a managing partner. not sure how pegula is organizing his acquiring company -- i'd bet it's an llc -- but you can be sure that pegula is the managing member (partner) of the company that is buying the team. Just saw this - I agree completely. You have to be a partner in order to be a managing partner.
waldo Posted February 2, 2011 Report Posted February 2, 2011 Dems roll over for Golisano Golisano didn't save the Sabres. Golisano was given a sweetheart deal where the Democrat controlled entities forgave $30 million+ in debt for him. Quinn was the madame who put those two in bed together. You see, Quinn has the Empire Zone group which is the municipality arm in charge of tax credits and other giveaways, wrapped around his finger. If the Buffalo News did the same hit job on Quinn/Golisano over the past 7 years that they have done on Pegula in the last 7 weeks, I'm sure TG/LQ might be enjoying another version of taxpayer-funded structures right now. The one with cast iron bars. Quinn was doing what he does best....bilking the taxpayers out of funds with little to show for it. In return for the el cheapo price tag, and now close to 3x his money back....Golisano funneled millions into pet Democrat campaigns and was a power player in other positions. Remember Bucky with his "Pigeon Dropping" quote a few weeks ago? That is Steve Pigeon, who is Golisano's other lackey and a Democrat chairman, Buffalo mainstay, and 3 card monte master. Remember a few years ago when I started to bring up Steve Pigeon in the locker after a Sabres game, skulking around as the boys were changing after the game? That's a pretty big code red for any logical person who knows who he is. A multiple code red. Tom Golisano buying the Sabres is the exact same thing as if your borother in law works for Bank of America.....and he sells you a $250K house that was foreclosed on, to you for $165K without accepting any bids from anyone else unless they paid the $250K. In this case you are Golisano, Quinn is your brother in law, the State/County/City is Bank of America, and the taxpayers of NY are the shareholders. Who got the deal and who got screwed? Who should be thanking who? And Tom paid the Democrats back by 1. becoming a key player in bringing down the republican majority in the NYS Senate in 2008 and then 2. dumping a million dollars of his cash into Alan Hevisi's campaign coffers late in the election for NYS Comptroller to insure that honnest John Faso would lose. Too bad Mr.Hevisi was convicted of all those ripoff related crimes two years latter.

If I was the owner/GM/Coach/Scout of the Sabres, I would find these forums irresistable. Same as a player. You'd just never know my true identity. There are a few posters on here every now and then that have me wondering from time to time.

SDS Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 Where's that virtual sex machine they talked about 20 years ago? Fixing her taser?

notwoz Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 My questions, and I'm quite serious: Do you read Sabrespace? I often wonder how these guys could resist. A board like this one is a pretty good pulse of the fan. Oh and.. Dominic Moore??? Really?? How do you not know he has a busted hand? Hate to burst your bubble, but a guys who are worth billions have more important ways to spend their time than to read some fan site. They are much more interested in how to create even more billions in net worth.
notwoz Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 I have a question that applies to both of them: What feels better, money or having a couple million people love you? Money. They don't give a rat's a** what we think about them, as long as we spend money on their product. If money wasn't important, they wouldn't be billionaires.

Besides, he's only a newly minted billionaire... Maybe he was on this board before he fracked himself into the 'aires club... Old habits die hard... After all, dude was a hockey dad... 6am games and all....
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted February 3, 2011 Report Posted February 3, 2011 Hasn't stopped me.. Whose to say what I do with my day and what my interests are... Besides, he's only a newly minted billionaire... Maybe he was on this board before he fracked himself into the 'aires club... Old habits die hard... After all, dude was a hockey dad... 6am games and all.... I have a quick story regarding message boards. I had invested a decent hunk of change in a small public company for the group I worked with. Their stock was very cheap in my eyes and their book solid. The management however reminded me much of Darcy. Sit around and take no chances while collecting a paycheck on the shareholders' dime. I was on the yahoo message board with some other investors lamenting over the situation and brainstorming ideas. Of course you know me to be reserved and non-vocal.....but anyway, I said I was going to the annual meeting loaded for bear and would address anything the other shareholders wanted me to. Well, I go to the meeting and walk in a few minutes before it is to start. I sign in at the desk and grab some coffee. The CEO walks up next to me and says, "Dwight Drane?". I just smiled and shook his hand. He goes, "the meeting is about to start and you are the only new face in the place." Here was the CEO of a public company with almost $100 million in sales, and he knows me from a message board even before he meets me. Now, it showed a few things...first, that he read the board and looked at opinions and knew concerns....and also that I was in his head enough that he expected to see me, and took the chance at assuming I was going to follow through and show up. We were friendly with each other and I got the full tour. We added to our position and forced them to give us a seat on the board. Everyone is human.
