SwampD Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 My old office? Seriously though, the north end's right there. They always have a great reputation for italian food. The main commercial area of the city is about a 15 minute walk too. Visually, that area around the arena is pretty crappy, but at least there's no giant crappy bridge right next to it. The more conversations I have about what ails Buffalo, the more I think that the Skyway is the root of all it's problems. The 190 doesn't help, either.
That Aud Smell Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 I'm sure that one of the negatives here will now say that the Arena should have been built at the corner of Elmwood and West Ferry. Let's move the Bills to Hertel and Sterling, while we're at it. so awesome.
Sabre Dance Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 Hmm, the only mention of Buffalo is that Miller is tied for 2nd on most difficult goalie to score on. This is survey taken by, arguably, the best in the NHL. It kills me when people in this town call him Mr. Softee or say we don't need him on the team. I guess it is a case of fans being fans, but sometimes I feel like I am surrounded by baboons. Don't know what you've got, 'til it's gone. Even though Vancouver is tied for first place in the league, Luongo still lets in his share of "soft" goals. It's just that their forwards can actually score...
PotentPowerPlay22 Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 Link? I don't think it totally throws out that argument. It just means Buffalo isn't in the bottom 5. I never fully bought the "players don't want to come here" argument. IMO you just need to offer them competitive contract terms and a chance at success. I think the argument that many players didn't want to come to Buffalo holds water. The reason is because the Sabres franchise is seen as trying to get by on the cheap. The team is perceived as a team that only wants to do the minimum and will not do everything possible to win the Stanley Cup. The Sabres always talk about not violating their internal salary cap. Players want to go to a team that has the desire to do everything to win the Cup and Buffalo has been unwilling to go all out for success. The departures of key players like Hasek, Drury and Briere were in many ways due to their desire to play for legitimate contenders. The Sabres had chances, but failed. Now this can all change under new ownership that actually sees winning a championship as the only legitimate goal of the franchise. I have high hopes that the new owner will provide all the necessary resources to try to win the Cup. If this is the case then I think the players around the league will look upon Buffalo as a much more attractive destination and I can almost guarantee the Sabres will attract higher quality free agents and not just journeymen fringe players like Niedermeyer, Grier, etc. The future has potential if Golisano and Quinn are removed.
MattPie Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 Isn't that true of every city, though (except for maybe NYC). How many Dallas Cowboys, past or present, live and hang out in the city of Dallas. They, too, don't play in Dallas. Most of the sports folks in this area (Philly) seem to live over on the NJ side of the river, so maybe there is something to this. There are probably a very few cities in the US and Canada that both offer indisputable benefits to downtown AND extreme difficulty with traffic in getting there. NYC is bandied about, but realistically, would everything be focussed on Manhattan (and now some of Brooklyn) if you could drive/train into the city in less than 45 minutes one-way? I'd probably live in downtown Buffalo if everything out to Batavia was equivalent to Cheektowoga (in terms of population density and traffic).
Mox Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 am I missing something?.. It shows Buffalo with 8% of the vote in 3rd place.
Weave Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 am I missing something?.. It shows Buffalo with 8% of the vote in 3rd place. Huh. They changed the graphic. And now the text doesn't match the graphic because Buffalo isn't mentioned anywhere in the text but NYI, Atl, and Edm are mentioned.
thesportsbuff Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 am I missing something?.. It shows Buffalo with 8% of the vote in 3rd place. Now isn't that something..

SwampD Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Now isn't that something.. Winston Smith hard at work.
spndnchz Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 Maybe the FBI, off the clock, could look into this, instead of searching for Kane's puck. Ridiculous.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted February 1, 2011 Report Posted February 1, 2011 am I missing something?.. It shows Buffalo with 8% of the vote in 3rd place. At first they threw out the votes for "dreary sh!thole", until the players clarified what it meant.
