matter2003 Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 CBC did a poll of NHL players and one of the questions was "Which team would you least like to play on" Islanders were first with 27%, Oilers 2nd with 20%, Thrashers 7%, Maple Laughs 5% and Florida Panthers 2%... If the Sabres were mentioned, it was below 2%, so the whole "noone wants to play here" argument goes straight out the window...
Weave Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 Link? I don't think it totally throws out that argument. It just means Buffalo isn't in the bottom 5. I never fully bought the "players don't want to come here" argument. IMO you just need to offer them competitive contract terms and a chance at success.

When the oilers were winning 5 cups in a row you probably couldn't find a player that didn't want to play there but now it's suddenly known as the purgatory of the N.H.L.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 The Sabres were irrelevant in that survey. The only mention of any Sabre at all in a 30 question survey was Ryan Miller being tied with Tim Thomas as the 2nd toughest goalie to beat. Not the worst, not the best....just how Darcy likes it.

I never would have guessed that 2/3 of the players want to keep the instigator rule. That changes how I think about it a little bit. I'd love to see HSBC get notariety for the quality of it's ice. Maybe they'll keep the temp of the rink down permanently.
SabresFanInRochester Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 Hmm, the only mention of Buffalo is that Miller is tied for 2nd on most difficult goalie to score on. This is survey taken by, arguably, the best in the NHL. It kills me when people in this town call him Mr. Softee or say we don't need him on the team. I guess it is a case of fans being fans, but sometimes I feel like I am surrounded by baboons. Don't know what you've got, 'til it's gone. (On a side note, Ales Kotalik received votes as one of the "hardest shots" in the league.)

I'm betting your 3rd and 4th line players were the one's ask to fill out the survey to get your population N=300. That's where the blue chip cheap-shot artists come from. There aren't too many traditional enforcers left.

It hardly even relates to be honest. Just because Buffalo isn't the absolute LEAST desirable place to play doesn't mean players WANT to play here. I guarantee if the question was "What five teams would you least like to play on" Buffalo would be a little higher up on the list.

Perhaps, but I thiink it's meaningful that the Sabres were ranked as least desirable (or maybe it was 2nd-least -- I don't remember) in a recent one of these, and now they aren't even in the bottom 5. That's progress. Actually that data doesn't really affect the argument what-so-ever. It hardly even relates to be honest. Cuz your response here is pretty damn much the same as one of the comments left on the page with that article.

That's progress. You realize that the survey ranked the bottom 5, right? Because players only answered with their LEAST desirable place to play, not their list of 5. The logic behind the survey is flawed. The data compiled only counts for the #1 least desirable place to play because they are only getting one response to each player. Let me put it into simpler terms. Let's say 10 players were asked for the bottom 5 teams they want to play for: Player 1: Edmonton, Buffalo, Florida, Atlanta, Toronto Player 2: Edmonton, Buffalo, Atlanta, Florida, Toronto Player 3: Toronto, Buffalo, Edmonton, Florida, Atlanta Player 4: Atlanta, Buffalo, Toronto, Edmonton, Florida Player 5: Edmonton, Toronto, Buffalo, Florida, Atlanta Player 6: Toronto, Buffalo, Florida, Atlanta, Edmonton Player 7: Florida, Edmonton, Buffalo, Toronto, Atlanta Player 8: Edmonton, Toronto, Buffalo, Atlanta, Florida Player 9: Edmonton, Buffalo, Toronto, Atlanta, Florida Player 10: Toronto, Buffalo, Edmonton, Florida, Atlanta So based on the poll's logic, Edmonton is the least desirable place to play with 50% of the votes, then Toronto with 30%, Florida & Atlanta tie with 10%. Buffalo gets 0% of the votes as the least desirable place to play, despite being #2 or #3 on everybody's list -- only the first vote is counted.
PromoTheRobot Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 What franchise would you LEAST want to play for? The prevailing opinion here is that Buffalo is the team at the top of that list, but a CBC poll of current NHL players shows that Sabres are not even in the top 5. The Isles and Oilers lead the list with Atlanta, Toronto, Florida, and even Montreal making the list. Considering Florida only garnered 2% of the vote there probably isn't the huge of the Sabres among NHL players we all thought there was. PTR

Corp000085 Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 It should be noted that Spaulding Lake and Meadowlakes in Clarence have a hell of a lot of current and former Sabres and Bills in it. Hell, There's one current Bill who is neighbors with my parents. He is there now. The myth that Buffalo is an abortion is just that. A myth. Players love it just like we do.

They, too, don't play in Dallas.

Yeah, but many of those other cities actually offer something in the immediate area of their arenas/stadiums. Buffalo comes up in these polls a lot because guys fly in for a game and see absolutely nothing when they're in town. Of course no one is going to want to play here if their only impression of the area is downtown Buffalo.

And how many of us truly will admit to "loving" the downtown area. Just looking at the free zone of the train, you have the theatre district and the chip strip. Other than that, its just a bunch of banks. We all love Buffalo here, but downtown??? come on man. I consider Buffalo to be WNY in its entirety anyways, not just downtown Buffalo.

I consider Buffalo to be WNY in its entirety anyways, not just downtown Buffalo. See, this is a good point. I live in Buffalo and work in Buffalo, and there just isn't much to do in the business district after business hours. Just like most cities! Allentown isn't downtown; neither are Elmwood or Hertel, but there's plenty to do. Near the Arena, there are a few spots that are hopping on event nights, and that's normal where the arena is near businesses and government buildings. I'm sure that one of the negatives here will now say that the Arena should have been built at the corner of Elmwood and West Ferry. Let's move the Bills to Hertel and Sterling, while we're at it.
shrader Posted January 31, 2011 Report Posted January 31, 2011 Is there anything directly near (walkable) Boston's arena? (real question). My old office? Seriously though, the north end's right there. They always have a great reputation for italian food. The main commercial area of the city is about a 15 minute walk too. Visually, that area around the arena is pretty crappy, but at least there's no giant crappy bridge right next to it.
