thesportsbuff Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 The "draft" is live now on NHLN in the States (and I think tsn in canada). Out of all of the dumb-ass formats for an all-star game that the NHL ever has had, other than the NHL v. Russia stuff (which were not in-league), this is the dumbest. Wow, I mean, wow. This makes "NA vs. World" look brilliant. Please, STOP this game. It's not necessary, and it's stupid. If it must be done, do it this way: Winter Classic on the Sunday between NFL playoffs and Super Bowl. A couple of national games on NBC on Saturday. That gets viewers on a completely dead sports weekend, instead of putting the NHL up against the Rose Bowl and a couple of mid-quality bowl games. The Wednesday of that week, there's your crappy all-star game. The teams get that week off, and resume the day after the SB. I think the format is cool, but theyre trying to make it something it's not by having the draft live on TV and better yet having MOCK drafts on TV. Who would watch those? lol IN my opinion they shoulda just picked the all-stars and 5 minutes before puck drop, pick teams gym class style and go.
Eleven Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 an update: looks like the "draft" is on Versus, not NHLN.
Eleven Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 UPDATE: this is really stupid. I mean, REALLY stupid. Like I'm changing the channel and hoping to find a re-run of Quincy (PA, yes, it's a re-run; that show ended a while back) or McMillan and Wife or something. (Chz, before you EVEN start, I'm not well. Otherwise, I'd be stalking tequila/margarita bars everywhere.)
korab rules Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Why is it a "mock" draft? These are the teams they are playing on tomorrow, right?
thesportsbuff Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Why is it a "mock" draft? These are the teams they are playing on tomorrow, right? The "mock" draft was yesterday on Versus or NHL Network.
deluca67 Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Hate to tell people, the All-Star game is not designed to save the NHL. It's a showcase. This "School Yard Draft" is a great idea. This is just fun to watch. It's like having your fantasy team come to life. This may be the start of something. Why not start every season of every professional sports league with a draft of the existing players? Then follow up with the entry draft. That would make sports far more interesting.
thesportsbuff Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Why not start every season of every professional sports league with a draft of the existing players? I respect your opinion but this is just a terrible idea and will never happen. The Sabres might have a better chance of winning the cup if it did, but you'd be eliminating so many aspects of the game. Who's your favorite player gonna be when he's playing on a different team every year? Is anybody going to buy a jersey knowing the guy probably won't be on the team next year? No thanks. Like I said, I like the draft-style all star game, but just the way they act like it's REALLY an important draft that matters is laughable. Just a big gimmick.

I was just going to say something to the same effect. Some of the posters are totally missing the point on this. This is the way we all picked teams as kids and they're trying to bring that fun aspect back into the game. Its something Brendan Shanahan came up with and the players association and NH.L. agreed it was worth a shot. Also, the last thing the N.H.L. would try to do is compete in the states with football in any way. The way I heard it explained on T.V. was that they would never win that war so ignore it. They all realize that an all star game isn't going to win any new fans for the league anyways so why worry about it. Its more for the fans that already tune in than for turning on new fans.

I actually watched most of the live draft and thought it was entertaining.

How are those people with the Drury, Briere and Campbell jersey's doing? A league wide draft would give the Sabres a better chance at a Cup. The building and rebuilding thing hasn't worked over the past forty years. I'll take the idea one more step. Each team should host an open Fantasy League and the person that wins gets to be the teams GM the following season. I doubt any Fantasy Geek could do worse than Regier.
BeachedNLA Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Not watching... But just saw on NHL.com that Cam Ward went #1 to "team Staal"... WHY is Cam Ward an All-Star?? He has a higher GAA than Ryan Miller (not saying Miller should be there either...). I'm guessing the answer is fan ballot-box stuffing, and Carolina being the home city, but that alone tells you there's no cred (to the process).
korab rules Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Watched it. It was interesting ina train wreck kind of way. Even my 11 year old thought it was cheesy. Watching JR and weekes hype it for an hour was painful, especially since the process was a joke. The indraft analysis was so unnecessary it was laughable. Who is the target audience for this steaming pile? I think world juniors should be held during the all star break. Give me some frigging hockey! Too bad my sons have tournaments in towns 2 hours apart this weekend. On the positive side, my youngest scored game tying and game winning goals in tonights game!

Pens-Craps is a showcase. Edmonton-Calgary is a showcase (even if both teams are bad!). This is a showcase of ceremony, and that's about it. This is silly. The game is silly. The skills competition is silly, too, but at least it's entertaining. One out of three ain't bad, from the league's perspective, I guess.

bunomatic Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Well I haven't watched an all star game in about 10 years. All star games in every league are meaningless. It could be worse, I could be forced to watch the probowl.I don't think its a bad thing the league has changed things up on this one. The skills competion is o.k. simply because its cool to see what some of these guys can do. It will be interesting for those that watch the game to see the sedins play on opposite sides for the first time in their careers.
thesportsbuff Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Of course the announcer messes up introducing Tyler Ennis, said he was from the Florida Panthers. Come on. :censored:

bunomatic Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 You would think these guys would figure out how to set up the split screen for the sharpshooter skill competition instead of the viewer seeing one side of both nets. :wallbash:

Two or less Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Of course the announcer messes up introducing Tyler Ennis, said he was from the Florida Panthers. Come on. :censored: LOL what a joke.
Claude_Verret Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Of course the announcer messes up introducing Tyler Ennis, said he was from the Florida Panthers. Come on. :censored: I wouldn't be at all surprised if that wasn't a mistake. The disdain for all things Buffalo is apparent with some of the game day staff at the RBC as well.

I thought maybe DARCY dealt him to the Panther because he was afraid that he would ask for more money when his contract comes up.

inkman Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 I thought maybe DARCY dealt him to the Panther because he was afraid that he would ask for more money when his contract comes up. Or give him $50 million, which is closer to the most recent trends.
