The report is a bit off. There was no facial laceration. He had a fit lip. It also neglects to mention that no staff came out to help and the only help we really got was from an off duty emt who probably saved his life. I just got home from visiting him at the hospital and he is making improvements but still has a long way to go.
Two or less Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Sorry to hear that about your buddy, hope all ends ok.
Claude_Verret Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Sorry to hear about your friend, I hope he is ok. I remember sledding those hills at Chesnut Ridge as a kid and it was a war zone. You could tell people were purposely following others down the hill with the intent of taking them out. There was always an ambulance parked there to treat the inevitable broken leg or arm.
wjag Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 I absolutely love Chestnut Ridge. We had a modified 8 seater toboggan. When conditions were right an emergency wipeout before the treeline was always deemed a successful run. Coasters and sleds on the other hills were a blast. Hot chocolate by the fire. Very fond memories. Sorry to hear about your friend. Growing up in Hamburg we had a place called Gunther's Hill. It had the 18-mile creek at the bottom. On the right side was "Hospital Hill". Can't tell you how many folks we saw messed up on Hospital Hill. Here's to a speedy recovery with all faculties intact.
spndnchz Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 We use to go on the hill of the thruway at the Amherst water tower. Not sure I'd do that anymore.
Rico7 Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 We use to go on the hill of the thruway at the Amherst water tower. Not sure I'd do that anymore. Used to do that as well. It was usually accompanied by several beers. Xander- hope your friend makes a speedy recovery.

I grew up in the village of Hamburg as well and my friend lived right down the street from Gunther's Hill. Trying to navigate the trees on hospital hill was indeed a challenge. There were many times I needed to bail at the end of the hill lest I end up in the freezing waters of 18 mile creek.

BuffalOhio Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 My brother used to purposely wipe us out on the tobaggan. He did it one last time and messed up his girlfriend. On New Year's Eve. What an idiot. NOT his girlfriend much longer after that! I liked seeing how far we could go, but that was one long-assed walk back! I've found no place like Chestnut Ridge in my travels. What a great place! Hope your friend is OK!
shrader Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 My personal favorite thing about chestnut ridge was when the people who were walking back up would fall and slide all the way back down the hill. That walking area was always really slick.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Hope your buddy hangs tough. At least they were smart enough to get him right to ECMC. And on a side note, can we call you PrimeTime? ;)
Sterling Archer Posted January 24, 2011 Author Report Posted January 24, 2011 Hope your buddy hangs tough. At least they were smart enough to get him right to ECMC. And on a side note, can we call you PrimeTime? ;) Of course. One of my various other aliases. Just an update tho, Dan is still in a chemically induced coma and on the respirator. He is make some improvements still but it's a very long road. Doctors are saying at least 6-8 months. The head injury was not the worst part. Somehow, the acid from his stomach burned his lungs and he was unable to breath and was nearly brain dead when he arrived. The respirator is down to about 60% now and his one lung has healed. We learned that he is not brain dead but will be unsure of the damage until they can wake him up, which won't happen til they can get him off the respirator. It's been a tough week but I'm hanging in there and am at the hospital almost everyday. My other friend and I have found not to get a hair cut until Dan gets out of the hospital. Idk why but that's what we are doing. Thanks for the support.

I hope your friend continues to make progress and surprises everyone with a speedy recovery a la Kevin Everett and Gabby Giffords.

Doohicksie Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Wow... awful stuff. :( I just got back to Texas after driving up to Albany, NY, with my son who moved up there to take a job with the company his aunt works for. He will be providing in-home care for traumatic brain injury patients. This is something that seems to fly under the radar until you know someone that is injured, or someone you know works in the field. I hope your friend makes a full recovery.
North Buffalo Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 I hope is well with your friend. I have fond memories of the toboggan run, but no so much of the sectional cross-country course. Three times up and down that darn hill plus running through a mud section three quarters of the way up between two lines of tress that was partially frozen, it sucked. People would lose shoes in it constantly.
Meathead Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 when i was a kid my friends and i used to play 'battle sleds' where we would try to be the only one still going at the end of the run. we would build obstacles out of snow including jumps and then try to shove each other into them as we were speeding down the hill i ended up bashing a tooth out but that was the extent of our injuries. im surprised we didnt get more in the summer we would race trail bikes and field cars at the same time. im surprised im not dead
Sterling Archer Posted February 1, 2011 Author Report Posted February 1, 2011 Friend woke up yesterday. He's breathing on his own and was responsive when asked to give a thumbs up. The doctor said he was amazed at the progress he's making. It's utterly amazing.

Sterling Archer Posted February 9, 2011 Author Report Posted February 9, 2011 Went to go see Dan yesterday. He actually opened his eyes and he definitely recognized that it was his mom and I in the room. It was huge for me and a huge step for him. Today, they'll be moving him out of the ICU and starting rehab. Still a long road to go, but he's been making giant steps as of late.
