Does Gerbe have any trade value? Why not dump him for "future considerations" and call the next guy up from Portland? Give Mancari or someone a 44 game tryout.

Back before his hands were tied, Regier would have traded Gerbe for a good vet and a decent prospect (see Grosek or Gratton for examples). The Quinn must go, Pegula or not.

Gerbe or Mancari.. does it really matter?

As for the game, ive watched several Ave games on CI this season because they are a fun team to watch. No clue how we will keep them in check. That team plays a full 60 minutes almost every single night, they hit and are quick. Tonight may be an ugly game. Something like 4-1 Aves. I hope im wrong but the Aves are just a much superior team to the Sabres and unless the Sabres play one of their better games of the season, i think we'll get run out of their building, and that is what i'm expecting.

Can I ask a simple question? Why would Quinn put a stop to a trade like that?

Probably because it isn't his idea.

EDIT: let's get a little more detailed. Before Quinn, Regier made some trades that were absolutely brilliant. So much so that Dumont was "the other guy" in the Grosek-Gilmour deal. Gratton for Briere. Warrener for Drury (about a month or so after Q came back and before he could interfere again). The man absolutely fleeced the rest of the league. The worst he ever did was Peca for Connolly and Pyatt, and that's only because Peca was definitely gone (and judging from what we saw after he left, maybe not a bad trade, even given the two softies' performances).

What changed?

One thing changed: Quinn.

Or maybe the entire rest of the league figured out that Regier would fleece them, and stopped making real deals.

I'm going with the Quinn theory, as I always do. It's the only one that makes sense.

I can't even imagine the heart break if the Pegula deal falls through somehow. The man is already a legend of some sorts to fans and none of us even have heard him speak yet besides the PC he gave to Penn State hockey.

I am not a Quinn fan but I doubt he is putting a stop to any trades.

Any Quinn influence is reflected in the budget. The Sabres have spent up to or pretty close to the cap each season. If anything Regier is hampered by his own poor decisions. He has handed out some pretty ridiculous contracts and the team is paying for them now.

Because trading a guy who makes pennies for a veteran who makes a decent sum means the team must go above it's self proclaimed cap. The trades Darcy Regier made pre-Golisano once made him be part of the 100 most influential people in hockey, as named by The Hockey News in 2006. The trades he made were actually pretty good and did make the Sabres into a Cup contender... twice.

Trades such as Joe Juneau for a prospect who never made it, Stu Barnes for Matt Barnaby was a steal, and Rhett Warrener for Mike Wilson went long ways to that 1999 team.

Then the Hecht trade for picks, the Ballard for Drury, Gratton for Briere, Jakub Klepis for Mike Grier, pick for Lydman set up the contender team for post-lock out.

I know some of those were right when Golisano bought the team but the team had tons of money to spend and Golisano needed to put money back into the product. Recently, when we make a trade, we're bringing in a guy and letting go a guy. How many teams gearing for the playoffs do that? When we got Dominic Moore, we traded Ales Kotalik to save money. When we got Raffi Torres, we had to off-load Clarke MacArthur.

Only way Sabres can trade Gerbe for a veteran now, is if they find a fool to take on Hecht or Rivet to clear the money. And that just ain't happening.

I can't get into this again; it's been too many times. ALL of the circumstantial evidence points to Quinn's involvement, and none of us really know what happens. So I have to go with the Quinn-is-the-problem theory.

First of all, I never said trade Gerbe for a Vet. I would rather have picks.

Secondly, this team has a budget. Most teams do. Is it really TG and Quinn stopping trades or is it the Vanek, Pominville and Connolly contracts. This team still spends over $50 mil. They don't have a KC Royals type budget. They have a competitive budget with a GM that has spent it poorly. Regier may have made some good trades in the past. His decisions on contracts have paralyzed this franchise. For gods sake, this team is paying Craig Rivet and Jochen Hecht $3.5 million each. You can't blame TG and Quinn for that.

Good thing it is only six pm over here on the west coast, looks like some of you haven't known what to do with the late game and maybe had a few too early. That is how it appears since now this is a trade discussion and not game discussion thread.

No arguing there. I also think, that he was TOO good of a GM in his "prime" and has many scared off because he has so many lopsided deals. I was once watching a TSN special on the trade deadline and they interviewed a GM who said you always want to win a trade, but you also want to be fair in return because then you'd look bad to your peers and people will lose respect in you. It made me think of Darcy. I do think he's handcuffed by the upper management, but, it's NOT just that, as you mention. Darcy has done a lot to shoot himself in the foot.

Just like how Criag Patrick got fired in Pittsburgh, that time may be here. Patrick did A LOT of good but just couldn't finish the job so they replaced him with someone who had slightly different ideas who can ADD to what Patrick had already build. I still support Darcy but i do think it's time for a change.

And no way we can get picks for Gerbe. He was a 5th rounder himself. Only value he could possibly have is for a team dumping salary and taking a low risk on Gerbe... a team that is in selling mode.

Was that a let's go buffalo chant I heard

Sounds like it on my stream.

Edit: Colorado feed, it's fairly clear. Though the play by play guy must me misinformed as he just called Vanek dangerous.

I'll take cap relief at this point.

I don't love Sylvester's play calling, but this is the best I've heard from him. I do like Hamilton better, though.

Dammit. Colorado goal.
