Anybody go to the open skate at the pepsi center at noon?

If so you may have seen the sabres, as I saw tyler myers. That dude is still a bean pole.

But the highlight of the skate was me getting up ended and ripping my lip in half and leaving a nice little pile of blood.

When someone asked what changes Pegula should make, I offered up a private, state of the art practice facility for the team. There's something bush league about an NHL practicing on ice an hour after the public is out there skating around.

I wonder if any NHL team has its own facility.

Seriously, can you imagine guys playing flag football half and hour before the Bills take the field?

Canadian teams just use local ponds, streams, etc. The country is frozen 1/3 of year after all.

I know the Blackhawks, Lightning, Hurricanes, and Coyotes all use public rinks, just like the Sabres.

Thanks for that. I'm not sure why it bothers me that the Sabres have to share ice with the public. I originally picked up on this when Lindy said the Sabres couldn't fully practice the power play there because the rink is too small.

There's no reason this should be acceptable to Pegula, if he's really interested in changing the culture surrounding the team.

I have to agree that it is asinine that they would practice on a rink that is too small but I'm pretty sure the Sabres only practice at the Pepsi/Northtown Center when the arena is in use.

that sounds about right.

the last thing these Sabres egos need is an exclusivity boost, like a private training facility. in fact, i'm all for Ruff holding Sabres shinnies on one of the UB ponds right across the road from the Pepsi Center.

Seriously, I'd not only be in favor of this "boost" as you call it, but also making the culture surrounding the team even more player-centered. Access to the media after a game should be severely restricted. Bucky should never see Tim Connolly leaving a lockerroom and declining comment. That's a terrible spot to put a player in. Also, let these guys leave the arena without being hounded for autographs and photos. You know they would love these changes. Make this the best place in the NHL to play!

I wouldn't go that far but I think having open practices and having them in a public facility is good for the fans and good for the team.

The Sabres could build a nice regulation size practice rink right near the arena. I'm pretty sure there is a nice piece of land just waiting for some development near there. :)

That's actually not a bad idea to do as part of the waterfront.

well, make it more aggressive then - pipe in crowd noise like football teams do.. give a bunch of high school kids trays of rotten eggs to pelt the players with when they make boo-boos during PP practice.. every giveaway a player loses one piece of protective equipment

damn it, they will learn, one way or another!

I agree. These guys are pussies compared to me. All I wear is pants, shin guards, and a helmet and after I took that hit I was still trying to get up and keep going and was thinking about playing last night til the headache started kicking my ass.

Hell, sign Tanya Harding if you gotta.

The Sabres have practised in public rinks for as long as I can remember. Heck me and my brother use to play in youth travel leagues outta Sabreland. Course back then the Sabres ACTUALLY owned the public rink they practised at. I even got to skate with Ray, Audette, and Galley towards the end of one of my teams practises since the Sabres had the ice after use. I like the idea of them practising at a public rink. I just think they should own one again so they can be in full control of ice times and rink size/upgrades

That made me laugh. Good stuff.

But in all seriousness, during the season the Sabres practice at HSBC Arena, but right now can't due to the World Juniors. Not sure if building a $15 million ice rink is really beneficial for a few practices. Also, when the team does off-season workouts, like the youth developmental camp or whatever they call it, many of their practices are at Dwyer Arena, which closes all public skating while the Sabres are there and the team has state of the art press boxes to sit in, conference rooms and nice locker rooms. So again, if thats there, why build another rink? Right now, it's also being used for World Juniors.

In the off-season, i know several players who live in the area, like Patrick Kane, Jason Dawe, Micheal Peca, Matt Barnaby, Patrick Kaleta, Curtis Brown, and whatever are at the Pepsi center skating and playing with college kids or even just friends. I never thought of it as bootleg i always thought that was cool.
