donteatyellowsnow Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Is anybody else getting a little sick of Miller's excuses? yes! been sick of them for 5 years now.
Eleven Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 That was a fun game to be at, but wow, I'm learning to re-hate the Bruins like it's 1983. At least this time the Sabres responded when they got hit by a cheap shot. I'm getting close to the point where I might hate the Bs as much as the Senators. I'm reading above that the Bruins announcers were complaining about the refs...are you kidding? The Bruins got away with a couple, including having two extra men on the ice at one point in OT. Miller was horrible. Because we don't have a capable backup, the Sabres were forced to leave him in. At least Boston was able to move from Rask to Thomas when necessary. Thank you, Stafford, for the hat trick. But when you've got three goals and you're still even for the night, it says something about your play in your own end. Pominville, with 4 points, was a +2. Great game for him. It's about time. Finally--and I'm asking for others who were at the game to back me up on this--except for when the Sabres were down 4-1, it was loud in there. "Let's Go Buffalo" chant early in the game, and plenty of shouting throughout.
Stoner Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 I gotta hand it to Sylvester. I thought he did a great job. It's even more impressive knowing that he has not done a game yet this year. MJ does the Pirates games so at least he's in practice. So for one game at least, I don't hate him. I'll wait until after the next 3 games to decide if I could listen to him for a whole season. He said a Bruin took a big dump in the corner. I did think the Stafford tying goal call was good. The others were pretty hard on the ears. What bugs me is the suspicion he could become the next Jack Edwards. He has the douchey jerkiness about him. He was delighted when Thomas came out and fell, then moments later praised Miller for playing the puck, yes, without falling. "That's how you do it." Kevin probably thinks he's god's gift to broadcasting when he has so much to improve on. And he mistakes near side for far side, a lot.
Stoner Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Using the word quality when talking about Jack Edwards just makes me giggle. He is terrible. I bet the people of boston would take KS. I guess familiarity breeds contempt, because if KS was brought in from somewhere else, you'd be drooling all over him Drooling over Kevin? You don't really think that.

I thought that meant they just had the opportunity to match the offer. Wasn't Vanek a RFA when the Sabres could have had four 1st rounders for him? KS's own family wouldn't take him over Jack Edwards. Having to hear "Big Z" throughout the entire broadcast was painful. It got to a point I started feeling embarrassed for KS. There has to be some real talent out there that the Sabres can take a look at. These can't be the only candidates. Listening to them makes me think John Gurtler wasn't the worst it can get.

deluca67 Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Yeah, why would I think that? I mean, you are listening with an unbiased ear, with no preconceived notions about him, right? Have there been a great number of anti-Kevin Sylvester posts in the past? It is as simple the candidates, if they are candidates, have been third rate. Nothing personal against them, just don't want to have to listen to them for the next 5-10 years.

Stoner Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Yeah, why would I think that? I mean, you are listening with an unbiased ear, with no preconceived notions about him, right? Of course I have preconceived notions. He's done games before.
carpandean Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Yeah, why would I think that? I mean, you are listening with an unbiased ear, with no preconceived notions about him, right? But, perhaps, you are as well? Overvaluing our own "assets" as usual? KS has a good voice (and my wife thinks he's cute  ), but he doesn't cover the action well. He's misses things, sometimes even pausing (dead air) when he loses it, and just isn't that descriptive. As I said before, MJ was very good at all those things, but just doesn't have his father's voice. With so many play-by-play personalities out there that would love to have a shot to call in the NHL, I'd rather keep looking for a future RJ replacement. These guys aren't the Sabres' only options.
thesportsbuff Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 i guess I picked a pretty good game to go to. 12 goals, 3 goalies, a fight, a hat trick, overtime, a shootout, and a sabres win. GREAT game, despite the terrible goals Miller let in and how bad the defense was at times.
ParkMeadow Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Vanek tripped a guy, took the puck and scored. The Sabres got a huge gift there. If that was a Bruin player tripping Myers and scoring, there would be a half dozen threads on NHL officiating and how the NHL is a garbage league because of it. So, Mr. DeLuca, you've made it abundantly clear, in this post and others, that you are a big fan of Jack Edwards. I don't know where you live and how often you are subjected to his broadcasts, but I have very little choice (other than VS) and have to endure NESN if I want to watch the NHL here in NH. He is the poster boy for homerism. Unless I am in a lighthearted mood and able to laugh at his innumerable ridiculous assertions throughout his play by play call, it is truly maddening to put up with him. I turn off the sound most games. It's too bad, really, because he is very talented and can be an asset to the game he's doing, but he just can't help himself. Even Andy Brickley tries to reel him in once in a while, but he is rarely successful. I wonder if it is in Edwards' contract to be such a shill for the Bruins, or if it is just inbred in his nature. Either way, I'd much rather have silence than listen to him most nights.
thesportsbuff Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 one thing i want to comment on is that the arena was dreadfully quiet most of the game. my group of 4 got a few chants going here and there but they wouldn't last. and what's with people leaving early? why even come to the game if you're going to walk out of a 6-5 game with 2 minutes left? BUT, at least given how the team has played this season you could assume they weren't going to get the last minute goal and leave, okay, I understand that. Then another few hundred people flooded out during overtime and before the shootout... wtf is the logic there? gotta get the kids to bed? haha. but yeah the place was dead until they finally scored that last minute goal, then it got pretty loud. overtime was pretty loud too despite the large amount of people who left early.

Definitely not. I just realize that we are trying to replace a Hall of Fame announcer. Whoever it is is not going to be as good. They are not going to be as descriptive or emotional. It doesn't mean that they are not good or will not improve. Watching a lot of Center Ice, KS right now (1 game in the past 11 months) is better than half the announcers out there.

But when it was 2-1 Bruins and the home crowd traditionally should be crazy loud as they try to cheer on their team apparently they were sitting on their hands. 2-1 and just before the 3-1 goal the bruins announcers made a comment about how quite the rink was. I'm sure there were shifts in the noise level but this crowd is still sometimes comatose and it is evident even watching on t.v.

And I still haven't figured out what the "side post" is. He called Boychuck "Boycheck." He's got some clunky expressions. "Up to the point" "down into the corner" "over out and up back to the top of the point" (made up the last one, but not far off) He sounds like a weatherman. "And the cold front will move on in through the area on into Wednesday in the A.M." Maybe he's being paid by the word. "Stafford down in" in the shootout. What I'd like to see the Sabres do is go back to the future and go find the next Ted Darling or Rick Jeanneret. Those two were found in their late 20s. Young and hungry, to match what the team should be. Find me some nut doing OHL games.

Some parts were quiet, mostly in the beginning of periods when fans had to wait for the first whistle to get back in their seats. Loudest and best string of chants this year IMO. Vanek tripped a guy, took the puck and scored. The Sabres got a huge gift there. If that was a Bruin player tripping Myers and scoring, there would be a half dozen threads on NHL officiating and how the NHL is a garbage league because of it. IDT that was a trip, Vanek had the puck first, then Boston player skates backward into it and falls.

I think that is why they let it go. It looked like the Boston player tried to play it with his foot and then fell. There is still a big difference between an early first period goal and an overtime winner.

Why can't they listen to the crowd instead of cutting them off? I suppose. Its really hard to tell sitting at home but when the commentators make note of it you tend to look for it.

It's even harder to tell at home when the only microphones picking up the crowd are two banana mics sticking straight out from the press box. Believe me I looked all over during last nights intermissions and found no other visible mics anywhere. Just these two sitting under where RJ and Harry are.
