Boy, it sure would've helped if Canal Side was up and running and we had that new Peace Bridge. No more 3 hour waits to come from Canada and fans could stumble out of the arena into Canal Side. Maybe for the next big event Buffalo hosts we could try putting the cart AFTER the horse...

Yes. We should have waited to host this until everything else was in place.

Well, I meant that we should have built the bridge and Canal Side years ago so they would be available now. Buffalo, thy name is Procrastination.......

Nope. They're literally changing the prices at will. There was a whole article in the paper on parking lot gouging today. They're even charging people extra that are already IN the lots.

Wow. I had no idea. I didn't see the article, but i work downtown an I know how the lots usually charge. That sucks. Way to go lot owners.

Brad Riter is actually talking about it now on 1230 weck. Guess cabies are in on it too.

The same lot that cost $30 for the Canada game yesterday cost $5 for the USA game right afterwards. One attendant even tried to sell me the $60 "all day" pass for both games. Riiiight.

We ended up paying $20 to park for the Canada game and then moving the car to a $5 lot for the USA game. Total pain in the ass but at least we were only ripped off a little.

When it was announced 2-3 years ago that the WJC was coming to town, I remember thinking how great it would be if the Casino & Canalside/Bass Pro would be opened by this time. Instead, just more downtown development failure. :(

If you're willing to see a game that doesn't involve the US or Canada, you can see it for very few dollars. Today's News reported that tickets for some such games are available for $3 on Stubhub or $10 on the streets.

If it's a game at HSBC, I highly recommend the metro. They are gouging people at the parking lots.

You're right. Got tickets to see Sweden-US Friday night with the family, $24 each. Might possibly be the first productive usage of the wretched bull-pupu "holiday" that is New Year's Eve. Thanks for the parking tip... if I remember, I can share any additional parking tidbits I learn...

Not sure what to say at this point. BUF is not LA, NY, SF, etc. It never will be. It will have to stand on it's own as a destination, good or bad. The problems in the City are as much the fault of the City leadership as it is the State of NY. How the tourney was landed in the first place is beyond me. Hamilton is crying that they can support an NHL team, and yet they did not land this tourney, and most of the crowd is coming from CAN. Go figure.

It's just a lousy situation. You have a great region, with a great arena that's located in a dead zone. Things just wont change down there. Go see some great hockey and move on. NY is hopeless.

Not sure where else to post this as there is no general discussion thread for the WJC, so here it will be. Getting treated to Slovakia vs Finland in the suite tomorrow. Don't have much interest ineither team but it should be fun (free booze & food in the suite).

Switzerland vs. USA you mean.

EDIT: In other words, while it isn't New York or Chicago (and I haven't been to Seattle, but I understand that its arena, wherever it is, is lacking a major tenant), it's not far off of, say, the two stadiums in Baltimore. Last time I was at a Nationals game, there wasn't much around that stadium, either, but I realize that may have changed by now. The skyway hurts, but it isn't quite as bleak a picture as the one you painted!

Good luck walking anywhere from the United Center.

Have fun and celebrate international hockey. I actually wish I could see a game at Dwyer between two non-marquee teams. I just don't have the time. I think you'll have fun.

Is there a difference?

Huge difference.

Isn't there a Morton's within a couple of blocks? Even if I'm not going to have the world-class steak, I'll at least have a world-class Manhattan there (and see a pretty lady or two).

This is not surprising at all. Buffalo and Rochester both have terrible downtowns. If you are from out of town, you are more likely to find a knife fight than an evening of quality entertainment, and now the whole world knows it.

I can picture these international fans from spectacular cosmopolitan cities like Vancouver, Montreal, Helsinki, Prague, and Moscow arriving in B-lo and wondering who could have possibly thought that hosting such a prestigious event there was a good idea. Downtown is like a Great Recession theme park. Urban planning is definitely not among the strong points of Roc city and Buffalo. Have you ever seen so much wasted waterfront?

Do you really think all of the players and fans are from Vancouver, Montreal, Helsinki, Prague, and Moscow? I'll bet most are from small towns. And downtown Buffalo does have quality entertainment, as much as any city of its size, really, but it's not geared towards kids, as about nine people have observed on this board so far.

No, I never have seen so much wasted waterfront, I'll give you that.

You, umm, don't get out much do you?

The city center has lots to do and see. You need to be 21 or over to experience it, but if you think dowtown Buffalo is dead you haven't been out ther looking very closely. Granted, it's no New York City or Dallas but you can't expect that from a city of 300,000 people.

Yeah, this too.

It could be worse, you could be in Vancouver,B.C. There's no large family outdoor celebration for new years and the police have warned people to stay off the streets. There's a reason they call it ' no fun city '. Don't get me wrong there is a wack of nightclubs and bars but thats not the end all and be all of fun. They don't even have a fireworks show or public countdown for new years? Whats with that?

The World Junior Hockey Championship. The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The NCAA Men's Hockey Tournament.

Buffalo has done well attracting some pretty significant sporting events. We must be doing something right.

This all started because some teenager stated he had nothing to do. What do teenage boys like to do? Teenage girls and video games? I think that covers it. What were organizers supposed to do. Set up the convention center in two sections. One side with tvs and PS3s. The other side with cots divided by hanging blankets, each with a teenage girl there waiting?

The city center? LOL! You make it sounds like it's SF or Houston. There is no city center. It's a complete dead zone between the arena and Chippewa. Then it's a dead zone again from Chippewa to UB.

Please list the activities to do in downtown BUF (not the region). If you're referring to Allentown or Chippewa, it's you that does not get out of BUF very often. If you think that only 21+ people hang out in the City, you're not paying attention. The area is flooded with inner-city kids and high schoolers from the suburbs. Chippewa has turned into a dump with crime and under-aged drunks running rampant. Even the guy from Moose Jaw knows that our downtown is a dump. I dont care what size city or town you come from. When you hit downtown BUF, you know you're seeing urban blight at it's utmost. Have pride in your city, but dont bury you head.

Other than an occasional decent show at the Tralf or Shea's, there is absolutely NOTHING to see and do downtown.

Tell us then, what are they doing right? I assume these events are bid on and it's low bids that brings them in. The downtown area has nothing to offer anyone. These complaints about downtown have been going on since the first NCAA BB tourney was held years ago. I assure you that this is not limited to some unhappy teenager.

Simma down sport.

The Cobblestone District has a few places worth going into. Irish Times on Swan. There's City Grill on Main. Hell, the 300 block of Main has got plenty of interesting places to stop in. Take a walk down Franklin Street sometime, you might be suprised by what you see that's available. The Theatre District as a whole has plenty of entertainment options other than Shea's and The Tralf. Buffalo's entertainment is far from limited to Chippewa and Allentown. Alot of these places have bands on the weekends and a few have weekday live music as well.

BTW, I get out of Buffalo all the time. I've vacationed in nearly every state east of the Mississippi and a few west of it as well. ;) I'm an old fart that doesn't even hit the Chippewa district and can still manage to find plenty of interesting places to eat, drink, and have a good time in the city. If an old man has no trouble finding a party in Buffalo I would think you young 'uns would be able to sniff 'em out too.

Low bid has nothing to do with it. The prospective host city has to show that they have the facilities, amenities, and organization to handle an event of that size. And they have to be able to showcase the event. AND... they have to do a better job of showing that than the other cities that apply to host these tourneys. Obviously someone was able to sell Buffalo's ability to be a good host to these tournament organizers several times. And the events keep finding their way back to Buffalo so there must be plenty of good reviews too.

Events like this go to the highest bidder? Do they not?

What are they doing right? There appears to be a great atmosphere at the arena. Seems to be plenty of hotel space and plenty of places to go and eat. Not to mention a pretty awesome exhibit at the art gallery. What is missing?
