wonderbread Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 I just read that there are 10 candidates and three finalists. That was for 2010. Only one of the four criteria involves skill -- and there's online fan balloting. I wish I hadn't read that, because I used to think the award meant something. By the way, the Sabres have two former winners. And they are... Miller/Leopold

By the way, the Sabres have two former winners. And they are... Vanek and Miller? (Didn't look it up--just guessing.) EDIT: I've got one right and one wrong. Not telling which; don't want to spoil the fun. DOUBLE EDIT: Four former Sabres were winners, too. In addition to the aforementioned Holzinger, who else?

spndnchz Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 According to Harrington, Gerbe might be odd man out. Lines today: Niedermayer-Roy-Vanek (seriously) Stafford-Hecht-Pominville McCormick-Gaustad-Grier Gerbe-Ennis-Connolly-Kaleta Mancari left over the weekend and Adam is gone yesterday.
kishoph Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 The GERBE experiment is a complete failure and putting him in the position of a top 6 forward is ridiculous. He can't handle the puck, he can't accept a pass and he can't score (2 goals in 30 NHL games). Sure he has 5 assist, but I believe that not one of them is the primary assist. Battling in the corners ? Come on now, how often does he come out with a puck ? He's improved the ROY line ? How, by losing the puck every time he gets it. I'm for giving any player a chance, but when your only attribute is being a scorer and you can't score, even with being on the top line and also given time on the power play, your useless to the team. The three injured forwards are suppose to be ready for tomorrow and GERBE shouldn't be in the lineup in front of any of them. Portland is where he needs to be, where he can thrive with the minor league players, because that's all he'll ever be, a minor leaguer.

I don't think I like any of those lines.
Eleven Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 Drury? 1 Robb Stauber. 2 The third is Tom Kurvers.

shrader Posted December 14, 2010 Report Posted December 14, 2010 I just read that there are 10 candidates and three finalists. That was for 2010. It's a minor nitpick, but the 10 are actually named as finalists and then that final group of three is called the Hobey Hat Trick. Gerbe was a part of that final three, and the guy who beat him out, Kevin Porter seems to be struggling to find his ways too. He does appear to have some solid stats so far this season though.

I don't necessarily object to the substance of this post, but I do object to the ALL CAPS for the players' names.

Eleven Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Puppa? Nope--read up: Drury, Stauber, Kurvers.

I'm not doing it to call a player out in any way, by doing it you can see the content of the post, any way I don't think I'm gonna stop.

Certainly you don't have to stop, but it is distracting. Makes your posts tougher to read, not easier.
hockeyhound Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 I am not an expert but why does Gerbe insist on trying to carry the puck in on the wing? I wonder if he ever gets tired of being met at the blue line. ouch! In my opinion which does not hold a whole lot of weight, it seems that Gerbe is trying to play a big mans game. I have listened to his interviews and he comes across to me as its him against the world and I am going to prove to everyone I AM BIIIIIIGG! Why doesn't he get over the fact that he is short and possibly embrace the fact and start playing a little mans game of opportunism. I have watched St. Louis and seems to me they have created plays that fit the man. eg I see St. Louis come in the zone as a trailer many times when the BIG winger drives it in low and they pop it back out and there he is in the slot SCORE! I would much rather see Gerbe trailing the play; I don't want him down low with 230lbs guys trying to prove to the whole world that he is big enough for the NHL. Opportunism Gerbe has speed and can turn on a dime he just needs the time. It was funny watching BIG Joe rag doll the kid. Finally, thank you Tyler Myers for stopping that ridicules spin move under pressure, now he can go on and play hockey.

inkman Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Does Gerbe have this speed? If so I'm not sure I'd it's been on display very often. When I watch Ennis skate, clearly he's moving faster than everybody. I don't get the same feeling watchin Nathan.

Quite honestly, I think a big part of this answer lies in the fact that he's not exactly the brightest guy out there.
That Aud Smell Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 In my opinion which does not hold a whole lot of weight to the contrary (if your first post is any indication). welcome! Does Gerbe have this speed? If so I'm not sure I'd it's been on display very often. When I watch Ennis skate, clearly he's moving faster than everybody. I don't get the same feeling watchin Nathan. we've been saying the same thing about gerbe for some time now -- his speed and quickness are more rumored than real (at least at the nhl level). ennis, otoh, is mad quick and has good (not great) speed. lindy called ennis "greasy" during last year's one-and-done -- i think that's the perfect word for how he gets around on the ice.
That Aud Smell Posted December 15, 2010 Report Posted December 15, 2010 Quite honestly, I think a big part of this answer lies in the fact that he's not exactly the brightest guy out there. you would say that about a bc guy. ;) (seriously, though, that makes perfect sense. he lacks the hockey iq to develop the sort of game that he must have in order to survive (thrive) in the nhl?)

I'm not talking about hockey IQ. From all I've seen, he has that. I'm talking about his every day IQ here. And amazingly, it's not a BC thing at all. They pretty much always have a bunch of intelligent guys out there, but he wasn't one of them.
