shoveldog Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 Gerbe needs to go. He does absolutely nothing out there. He's completely ineffective, can't go into the dirty areas of the ice because of his size/strength without getting knocked easily off the puck, can't score and isn't using his feet to create plays. In contrast, Tyler Ennis looks dynamic, creative, explosive... he looks like a younger Derek Roy. Does anyone know if he's on a two way contract? If so, I'd send him packing to Portland as soon as Stafford is back and move Ennis to the 1st line with Roy and Vanek until he returns. Thoughts?

Why single Gerbe out?
BuffalOhio Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 I agree. Ennis is way better, but I think he's the replacement (finally) for Briere. He makes so much happen out there.
Stoner Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 Remember, folks, this was the guy who made Tim Kennedy expendable. The Other Niedermayer did, too.
Marvelo Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 . Not sure that putting him on the top line is a good idea, although he's getting good assists vs. the bottomfeeders of the league. I think Gerbe makes some things happen and I'd keep him around to let him develop, as opposed to guys like Niedermayer, Hecht and Grier, who are clearly on the downside. If you're going to get an old guy, get a future HOFer like Recchi, not an old footsoldier.

If you're going to get an old guy, get a future HOFer like Recchi, not an old footsoldier. Please, enlighten us... what does Gerbe make happen? He is at the absolute bottom of this roster in points by a forward playing 7+ games... and he's playing on the top line. Probably a real nice kid, but he doesn't belong in the NHL. Is this statement directed at Ennis "Not sure that putting him on the top line is a good idea, although he's getting good assists vs. the bottomfeeders of the league?" Do you realize Ennis is the 4th leading scorer and point getter on this team? I'm sure Lindey is trying to spread his scoring out over the lines, but Ennis impresses me as en electric playmaker. He needs to be paired with a natural goalscorer like Vanek.
Eleven Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 Remember, folks, this was the guy who made Tim Kennedy expendable. The Other Niedermayer did, too. Tim Kennedy made Tim Kennedy expendable. EDIT: As I was writing this, the web went all a-twitter with rumors that the Rags have given Kennedy permission to seek a trade. http://twitter.com/618_STLBlues and http://twitter.com/kchamber18 Maybe the Rangers will take Gerbe for him. Then neither team will improve.

He needs to be paired with a natural goalscorer like Vanek. well he's 0-5 -5 through 20 games. hecht is 3-4-7 through 30, niedermayer is 0-6-6 through 21, etc. ; 3/4 of of the team is 10 pts and under. You obviously have a burr in your saddle about Gerbe but IMO ahe's getting better. He almost stuffed one in last night, had a couple assists the night before and I believe the same the night before that. Plus he had a broken jaw recently. You have to give young projects and needs time. I don't have much to back me but I think he can be good if they put him with good players like Ennis and Adam, and not with scoring anchors like Kaleta or Grier.
JJFIVEOH Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 Gerbe is getting better and is putting in some really good effort. Yes, he's making mistakes and he's not scoring, but you have to keep in mind who his line mates have been for most of the season. I think he's getting some undeserved criticism because of his output while some other veterans on the team deserve much more criticism for the same reason. He's not the main problem right now. If Gerbe had been playing so bad the last few games the entire line would be suffering........... and it's not.
Eleven Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 Rob Niedermayer doesn't help the team any more than Timmy did for the same price. Actually, because he's hurt, we're paying two people's salaries to fill Timmy's spot. Yet, the spot isn't "filled," and wouldn't be "filled" even if Timmy were here. The guy just wasn't that good.
Stoner Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 Yet, the spot isn't "filled," and wouldn't be "filled" even if Timmy were here. The guy just wasn't that good. How did he do in your survey after the season?
Eleven Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 How did he do in your survey after the season? IIRC, he did really well. He was a fan favorite, that's for sure.
Stoner Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 IIRC, he did really well. He was a fan favorite, that's for sure. I just remember him sticking his nose in after whistles and sticking out like a sore thumb on a team of Lady Byngers.
Eleven Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 I just remember him sticking his nose in after whistles and sticking out like a sore thumb on a team of Lady Byngers. I remember that, too, but there are some guys on this team who are willing to mix it up. I also remember Kennedy leaving the puck behind on more than one occasion. The guy's not guy might not be a full-time NHLer, in my book, and if I remember the discussions from the summer correctly, his election of arbitration forced the Sabres into a one-way contract. That's the problem with a guy like Kennedy. The team needs to be able to send him down to Portland. Anyway, back to the topic at hand: I'm fine with ending the Nathan Gerbe experiment right now. Tons of heart; not enough size and not enough talent.
thesportsbuff Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 No problems with Gerbe's game.. he's been on the top line and has produced chances. He hasn't scored consistently but Roy and Vanek have been getting opportunity after opportunity, too.
Fire Lindy Ruff NOW Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 hes not that bad. hes makin oppurtunities, hes hard working, the points are on there way for him.
donteatyellowsnow Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 I dunno, Gerbe seems to have helped Vanek and Roy. Not sure when he was placed with Vanek and Roy, but going back to the Columbus game Gerbe, Vanek, Roy have combined for 14 points 4g and 10a. Vanek had a goal on the pp. Gerbe isn't getting points but whatever he is doing is helping Vanek and Roy get points. Ruff hasen't demoted him off the 1st line yet so he must be doing something right. You can see the guy has a pretty good skill set, he doesn't do dumb things on the ice, and he doesn't float, he is just smaller than everybody else. Once he learns how to play against the bigger, faster guys he will be fine.
shrader Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 I dunno, Gerbe seems to have helped Vanek and Roy. Remember how that line was clicking when Ennis was with them? Our two best forwards are showing up regardless of who is skating with them.
thesportsbuff Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 Remember how that line was clicking when Ennis was with them? Our two best forwards are showing up regardless of who is skating with them. I seem to recall things a little differently. I know we all like to point the finger at Lindy Ruff for randomly juggling his lines, but the Ennis/Vanek/Roy line was struggling to produce for several games, thus why he switched him and Gerbe to begin with. It didn't just come to him in a dream.
inkman Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 I still think the posters griping the most about Gerbe are the ones who thought he was some sort of savior.
bunomatic Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 I still think the posters griping the most about Gerbe are the ones who thought he was some sort of savior. Agreed. This 'kid' needs time to develop just like everyone else.
Eleven Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 I still think the posters griping the most about Gerbe are the ones who thought he was some sort of savior. I don't know if I'm griping a lot or not...but I never thought he was going to be a savior. I thought he might fit in nicely; I don't think so now. Hopefully I'm wrong.
BuffaTB Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 Gerbe is one of the VERY few players that does go into the corners and is more than willing to do the dirty work when necessary. Do we not remember last game against the Bruins when he tried hitting Chara? How many of our forwards are willing to even try to do that? I'd assume before the season started that Gerbe wasn't supposed to be depended on to score on the first line. Due to injuries, he's there now. Not excelling, but I'd say playing solid for a 5'6" essential rookie. Playing hard every single game, unlike a player i can think of getting $7 million a season. So to sum it up, this topic is :garbage:
spndnchz Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 Gerbe: no goals and five assists in 20 games and a total of 2 goals in 40 career NHL games. Vanek: 25 points in 30 games and 18 points in his last 15 games. Vanek's playing much better, much harder, skating better, this year unlike any I've seen. There's no way you can compare Vanek to Gerbe. BTW, Gerbe's not here to hit guys in the corners. He's here to SCORE.
