Marvelo Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Jim was one of us. Will miss his devotion to hockey. Wonder what Hasek is thinking?
LabattBlue Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 The Buffalo News is a shadow of its former self, when they had Carucci, Felser & Kelley on staff full-time. :(
North Buffalo Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Wow... RIP Jim... Enjoyed your writing for many years...
SDS Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 The Buffalo News is a shadow of its former self, when they had Carucci, Felser & Kelley on staff full-time. :( That goes for any news organization. For as much bashing they get, I don't think most people really appreciate how bad the business climate is for the traditional news outlets.
notwoz Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 That goes for any news organization. For as much bashing they get, I don't think most people really appreciate how bad the business climate is for the traditional news outlets. You're quite right. My wife works for a major newspaper, and many of my friends are in the news biz and things are truly ugly.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted December 1, 2010 Author Report Posted December 1, 2010 That goes for any news organization. For as much bashing they get, I don't think most people really appreciate how bad the business climate is for the traditional news outlets. Oh, I understand. The point being, the current staff adds little to no value. The only hockey guy worth a lick is Gleason because he actually had the nads to stand up to the organization as they dismantled it. They break no news, they have few contacts. When Golisano went into the bunker with Quinn a few years ago, the only press we would get is fluff from Wawrow. When Quinn needs to leak info of have a bullhorn, he uses Wawrow. Kelley always looked deeper than the surface, treated everyone with respect, and because of that, he would get info. The news staff has turned into glorified bloggers....a medium they would tell you they look down upon, yet can't do as good a job of it as "novices". I'll tell you, there is enough brainpower and creativity on this site alone to outdo the local paper. I've said it before, but there are 7 or 8 here that would outhustle and outwrite the news staff as a team. There are dozens of others here with brains and quality as well. That's what makes losing Kelley on a local level even heavier. We forget what consistant quality was like. And I did forget Vic when mentioning Felser earlier. That guy is just solid too. God does love irony. I hate getting punched in the gut during a party, but sometimes that's what we need to pause and appreciate the big picture.
Stoner Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 That goes for any news organization. For as much bashing they get, I don't think most people really appreciate how bad the business climate is for the traditional news outlets. Why newspapers started giving away their product, I'll never know. I haven't bought the News in five years. I read it everyday. I should feel bad -- but I like free stuff.
shrader Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 The Buffalo News is a shadow of its former self, when they had Carucci, Felser & Kelley on staff full-time. :( That's the perfect sign of what happened to print media though. Other than Felser who aged out of that profession, look where the other two went after leaving the Buffalo News.
notwoz Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Why newspapers started giving away their product, I'll never know. I haven't bought the News in five years. I read it everyday. I should feel bad -- but I like free stuff. Back in the day, newspapers, like every orther business and organization, felt they had to be "on" the internet. Once they got there, they realized that giving your stuff away is not a sound business plan. It should have been obvious, but back then no one had any idea of how much the internet would change our daily lives. Some pubs (Wall Street Journal for one), do charge for (most) of their stories. But they have been successful at that strategy because most people who subscribe probably write off the subscription as a business expense. But the biggest hit to newspapers was the loss of ads to the internet -- especially help wanted ads. Think about it, sites like Monster.com, Craigslist, and others basically came by and stole their lunch money. The ads you see on web sites don't even come close to making up the revenue lost from print ads. I subscribe to the Washington Post -- but probably read 75% of their news on the internet.
