Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 This freakin sucks.......I didn't know he was in such rough shape. Hopefully he pulled a few strings for all of us suffering Buffalonians up there. JK

bunomatic Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 My God. I didn't know he was ill. I'm shocked. R.I.P.
Taro T Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 This freakin sucks.......I didn't know he was in such rough shape. Hopefully he pulled a few strings for all of us suffering Buffalonians up there. JK D*mn, back down to reality. How the frig' does the obit for him mention that he was about to be enshrined in the Buffalo Sports HoF but not mention that he's in THE Hockey HoF? 1st Lieutenant Drebbin, now JK. RIP boys.
Patty16 Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 pancreatic cancer is usually far along by the time you catch it, and therefore there is usually little chance of survival. Damn. Hockey world is getting rocked lately.
shrader Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 What horrible timing. He's supposed to be the one breaking this story to us.
mrjsbu96 Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 i truly always enjoyed reading jim's articles. i don't know if he started in buffalo, but i definitely remember growing up reading his columns in the BN. i always thought it was cool to see him move on writing for some of the bigger national media, but knowing he had a pivotal stop in buffalo. rip
Bmwolf21 Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Wow, I am stunned. Like others have said - I had no idea he was in such bad shape. He left huge shoes to fill at the News, and no one has done it yet. RIP, Jim.
Weave Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Wat? Out of all the Sabres columnists that worked for BN and Courier Express he was my favorite. I alwys enjoyed his frank style. Godspeed Mr. Kelley
Stoner Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Too Young in Sabres history: Tim Horton, Ted Darling, Jim Kelley. Puts a real damper on what was a great day to be a Sabre fan. I hope Jim was aware of the developments, and I hope some of his last thoughts were how an ownership change could bring the ultimate great day to Buffalo.
SwampD Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 I can't remember the name of it, but the show that he and Roby did with Howard Simon was one of the best hockey shows there ever was. IIRC it was a simulcast on WGR and Empire. Because it was on DirectTV, I remember people calling in from across the entire country and they (especially Jim) always knew who and what they were talking about.

That's the thing. We are in an age of quantity and speed over quality. I used to wake up early as a kid to read the Sunday sports section top to bottom. Between the Bills stuff, and Jim Kelley's hodgepodge....then you would get Bills at 1 and Sabres at 7. Screw homework! Not to turn it into a BN bash....but the only time I look at the news is if I am directed there by someone else for a specific reason. I find it ironic that the news hadn't even mentioned Kelley's passing as hundreds of tributes are pouring in through twitter. I miss Felser/Kelley....and I am in my early 30's. We are losing too many quality and reliable people.

However, as much as I like the 24/7 echo chamber that is the internet, having someone like Kelley or Felser who could put things into perspective was the media's biggest benefit to readers.
notwoz Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Nice story from Canadian outlet. Apparently he filed his final story the in the early a.m. hours of the day he passed away. Dedication to the very end. Sportsnet.ca
Bmwolf21 Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Some reading material for those interested: Here is Sportsnet.ca's article about JK's passing: (EDIT: notwoz beat me to it but it's here again anyway.) http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2010/11/30/kelley_passes_away/ This is JK's column about his diagnosis, from last December: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/12/24/kelley_christmas_column/ An article about his relationship with Pat Burns and their battles with cancer: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2010/11/19/kelley_burns_remembered/ And finally - his final column, one he wrote about Brian Burke - and filed this morning at 1:30 a.m., the same day he passed. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2010/11/30/kelley_part_of_the_process/ Thanks to Lori for TBD for pointing me in the direction of these articles. Good stuff.
BuffalOhio Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 RIP Jim. Always enjoyed your writings.
ET1062 Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 RIP Jim Kelley. My mom passed away from Pancreatic Cancer as well back in June. If anything good can come from his death, it would be awareness. Because the survival rate for PC is only 5%, there are very few survivors to participate in walks or help spread awareness and raise money. Those who are left behind must fight for a cure, money and research. While PC is the fourth leading killer amongst all cancers, it only receives 2% of all federal dollars devoted to cancer research. I am posting a few links below, Sabre fans will be familier with the Lustgarten Foundation, as PC is the cause of choice for Cablevision who owns MSG where you can watch the Sabres broadcasts. I encourage all of you to make a small donation in Jim Kelleys honor to one of these causes, and think of my mom for me. Thanks and Go Sabres! Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Lustgarten Foundation

beerme1 Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 This story has has blind sided me. My God Jim, you will be missed. RIP
Two or less Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 I heard the news earlier tonight via twitter and couldn't believe it. Very sad. I knew he had cancer but didn't know how serious it was. I loved reading his columns, not only as a child from the Buffalo News but in the WNY Hockey magazine, SI, ESPN (where he used to work) and Sportsnet. He was the best hockey mind i've ever read and as a student of the game, i always try to learn more, i always read his articles and always shared the links with my friends on facebook. One thing i always admired about Jim Kelley was his true love and loyalty for Buffalo. It didn't matter what platform he wrote on, he always wrote about the Sabres. Mostly good, sometimes bad. Whenever he spoke on radio, he always said great things about Buffalo. The man was as proud as anyone to be from Buffalo and the man loved the Sabres just as much as anyone here. I never knew him on a personal level, but i will say i felt like i knew him and i will miss him. This from Kevin Snow- "I find it ironic that Jim Kelley passed away on a day when hockey ruled the headlines in Buffalo. I bet he lived for days like this." Sorry if posted earlier... Kelley's take on "No goal" game... http://wnyh.presspublisher.us/blog/kelley-s-nhl-blog/game-6 R.I.P.
