sabres1970 Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 I'm just commenting to help the strive for 1,000. so.... go buffalo!
Bmwolf21 Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 Rick Dudley - Terrible head coach, in Florida fired after 40 games in first year. Now in Atlanta as GM, got a sweetheart deal with Hawks but what else has he done? Atlanta is 3-7-4 in last 14 and falling quickly. Pierre McGuire - Works at TSN, knows prospects, but does he know in and outs as a GM? Idk. Huge unknown, "proven winner" definitely not. Don Luce - Love him, and he may be best on the list besides Patrick. However, what experience does he has as GM? He is a great evaluator of talent, but im sure he's missed on a lot too but we all hear about Pomminstein and Moginly. Naming him as GM is like naming Buddy Nix as GM. "Proven winner"? Jim Benning - Good scout and is assistant GM with Bruins. Not sure what he knows, i'm sure he has a bright future but far from a proven winner. Claude Loiselle - Long time scout with Ducks, was a free agent for a while until buddy Brian Burke called him. Hmm.... Jason Botterill - Smart guy, left hockey with head problems but know little about him. Assistant in Pittsburgh. Seems like another "project" or "hopeful" and not "proven winner". Mike Mudd - Local kid, good prospect i guess, good scout and now runs the AHL team for the Sharks. Doug Risebrough - 3 playoff appearances in 8 years. He's better then Darcy? Larry Carriere - I've always thought he was an idiot but thats just my opinion, but not sure what he has done that is good? Is there another list with proven winners on it? Why am i just looking at the losers list? Just to be clear - the list you just described is, as you referenced in a previous post, "proven LOSERS"? I see a couple of guys I think you could make the argument are losers, but I see a lot of unknowns and prospects waiting for their shot (as GM).
Stoner Posted January 16, 2011 Report Posted January 16, 2011 Maybe i'm the only one, but, the article makes no sense at all. Says Pegula doesn't want Darcy back because it'd just be same ole same ole, and wants to bring in "winners". Yet, the entire LIST besides Patrick, are a bunch of proven LOSERS. What makes no sense is that it's clearly Bucky's list, but he wanted to give the impression he had some inside information. There was a real disconnect in that column. Too bad it got picked up so many places online.

I see a couple of guys I think you could make the argument are losers, but I see a lot of unknowns and prospects waiting for their shot (as GM). You're right, i was wrong. I used losers as a term because they have yet to even get a chance and some i do believe are losers (Pierre, dude from Wild, Carriere)

I used losers as a term because they have yet to even get a chance and some i do believe are losers (Pierre, dude from Wild, Carriere) No worries, and I agree, there are some I don't want to even be considered. But I have no problem taking a hotshot up-and-comer if that is the best candidate out there - and especially if TP can pair him with an experienced, steady president of hockey operations. As DeLuca mentioned in a prior thread - someone like the Wings' assistant GM might be an interesting fit.

There are a few guys on this lists that I would be more then happy with.

First it was Pegula is aiming for "big, big names in hockey" and now he wants "proven winners" and the only names are losers or unknown, and in some cases, like Carriere/Luce, its not any different then Buddy Nix for the Bills GM. If these guys were so good, wouldn't they be GMs by now? The younger ones are interesting but it just doesn't scream proven winner or big name as Bucky Gleason makes it sound. When i think of big names, the list i'd want to see is guys like Scotty Bowman, David Poile, Mark Messier, Neil Smith, Colin Campbell, Larry Pleau and obviously Criag Patrick which was listed.

I like all the names you've mentioned except Messier. He hasn't shown anything in the way of G.M. duties even as an understudy that make him stand out. I'm not sure if Bowman at his age would want to come back to Buffalo but perhaps in the capacity of a mentor for a younger G.M. much like he did with his son. As much as I dislike the thought of the old boys network I think that can work in a teams favour in that the connections are already in place as opposed to a newbie trying to break into that clique.

No love for John Muckler from you either? :) Big names? What's Wayne Gretzky doing right now?

There was a real disconnect in that column. Too bad it got picked up so many places online. Harrington says that, Bucky's list is just that, Bucky's list. Although he did contact the people or their representatives on the list to get comments, it is Bucky's list. Yeah, i guess what strikes me is the whole thing behind the articles.
