yeah but can you really argue that he hasn't drafted that well? First rounders he's maybe missed on more often than I would like but it seems like we always have a huge corp of really good prospects.

I don't have a source, but I remember him saying a while back (probably on WGR) that he makes most of the decisions in the first round and early second round, but relies heavily on the scouts after that. His biggest misses have been in the first round, while his hits have generally been later rounds, so what does that tell you? Also, people always point out the % of his draft picks that make the NHL, but remember that he also chooses who plays on the roster, he isn't active in the FA market, and the team hasn't been that good for four years. So, yeah, he chooses to put his draft picks into the NHL rather than looking outside the organization, meaning that a high % make it. That doesn't mean that they are good. We all complain about having too many third and fourth line players on the team and many of those that leave are third or fourth line players on other teams. In general, it's a very misleading stat.

Come to think of it, it's even odder to think that this might be one of Pegula's first moves "to the best of (Bucky's) knowledge." Pegula's not going to recruit a top hockey executive and say, "Oh yeah, the former longtime GM is going to be the head of your scouting department."

Yeah, that was pretty rich when Bucky said the accuracy of the Channel 2 report couldn't be confirmed. Rich! Bucky had Pegula in NYC a couple of weeks ago meeting with league officials, then had to admit he was there to see a concert.

The references to his sources being beer vendors must mean he was stung by the criticism.

Bucky continues to make outlandish statements couched as facts, like Pegula being a "one of their (the Sabres') biggest fans." He admits he has never talked to Pegula. Pegula started off a fan of the Flyers. He knows Craig Patrick, golfed with Sidney and attended the Winter Classic (both involving the Pens). Is he also one of Flyers' and Penguins' biggest fans?

Again, the "buzz" about a new GM making the decision on Ruff. Duh. No new owner is going to come in in February with a team out of the playoffs and fire a guy who's been there 13 years. Lindy will play out the string, and of course then it will be up to the new GM whether to pursue him. Finally we'll see how many offers Lindy gets on the open market.

Thats funny about the beer vendors and popcorn sellers. What about the hotdog dude? Its pretty telling how Bucky claims to have well placed sources yet everything he says is common sense to most people. Like your point about the new G.M. hiring his own people. Its something I could have written and the closest tie I have to the sabres is the people on this board which is about as far removed as you can be. Bucky will work this story til his jaw is sore and in the end he may be right but what he's said to this point has been no revelation when it comes to being newsworthy. I'll be glad to read the 'I told you so' column because it'll be an end to the speculation and it'll mean the sale has gone through.

Was he actually revealing a source there?

Scott Brown on Channel 2 broke the story, and he is a news/political guy, not a sports one.

Considering Pigeon has been in the Sabres lockeroom after games, skulking out Tyler Ennis in the shower, he probably has info to give. How it works is Channel 2 probably was going to do a segment on Antoine Thompson riding the short bus to school as a child, right before the election....and damage control comes in and says hold off the story and I will give you some info at a later date that can help. Well...here's some info.

Maria Genero was also a Sabres employee with ties to Quinn for a while. I don't know what that means, but I just like to bring up Maria Genero. You can do a lot worse than skating out a line of Maria Genero - Maryalice Demler - and Marissa Bailey.

Are you saying that Pigeon talked to Brown, and that's the reference in the Bucky article?

(I know Pigeon would have info to give...he has his beak in everything that goes on in this city.)

I like the line.

It's like when someone is on life support. You don't want to upset them or the family, so only happy thoughts are put out there.

Darcy is a nice guy, Lindy is a neat guy........but I don't understand how someone who believes in themself can stick around as a puppet for so long. And that's just it. In Darcy's case this was a comfortable resting spot where there was no pressure on him to make actual decisions to improve the team. He admits he lets the market dictate to him....he has never decided where the market would go. That's nice. 13 years....$5 mllion net worth give or take.....enjoy your vacation.

Dick Jauron is a nice man as well.

I'm not saying Pigeon talked to Brown.....I'm saying that after reading Bucky's article, I believe that is the reference. Bucky is the only one with stones enough to make quips like that. The breadcrumbs so to speak lead us in that general circle.

And I wouldn't dismiss beer vendors as sources. A genuine person who treats EVERYONE with respect and loyalty gets rewarded in the end. If the person doing the digging is smart and hungry enough, those little tidbits they pick up uncover a much larger situation. Too bad I can count those types of people willing to take that risk in Buffalo on one hand....after a meat slicing accident.

Oh, it's definitely the reference; there's no question about that. I'm just wondering whom Pigeon is talking to.

The reason this thing has felt like a sure thing to me from the start is because of the circle of information.

DuPont in Boston starting it, with previous breaking news on Pegula.

Wawrow doing his fluff for Quinn. Probably at the time Quinn was positioning for a title with the Sabres still, but thankfully Pegula sees through the BS.

Just the quantity of info from different solid places, even though some of it is parroting.

Now a political guy breaking a done deal. The Sabres management is all about politics anyway. The only question is if it was a favor for previous favor, or Golisano wants the info out there so fans keep pumping their dollars into the team for the short term with the excitement of an ownership change. You even had RJ make a joke a few weeks ago about "Harry, are you insinuating the Sabres didn't pay their Verizon bill for the phone line to Toronto?" Just little quips like that in the current environment need to be looked at as more than idle chitchat. When a dictator is about to go down, the people start to feel emboldened.

Let's rip that statue down!

Pierre McGuire as a prospective GM?

Thank goodness Bucky seems to pull most of his information out of his a$$.

McGuire's name gets mentioned all the time now for GM jobs. So if Bucky suggested that (still haven't read the column yet), he's not exactly throwing a new name out there.

John Davidson went from the broadcast booth to the front office and has been a giant success in St. Louis. As annoying as Pierre is, it's hard to argue that theres too many people out there who are better at scouting talent then him.

Not suggesting he couldn't do it; it's just that the guy is beyond creepy at times. Perhaps putting him behind the camera would be an improvement!

I didn't get the idea of throwing out those names for GM. The whole thing was cast as some kind of insider information Bucky has, but it just read as his opinion.

Geez, I hope Pegula doesn't buy into the good old boys Buffalo network -- Don Luce, Rick Dudley, some guy from Amherst, a former Sabre prospect. Think outside the bun!

Random side observation -- did anyone else read the caption to the photo in that article (re-linked below)?

Ha! Thanks for pointing that out. More stellar fact-gathering from The Buffalo News.

To me, it read as Bucky doing exactly what we've been doing here, except he somehow is getting paid. Any hint of insider knowledge quickly faded away after the pigeon remark.

Pretty much what you said.

lol I agree. However, he did mention my top dog i would want here and thats Criag Patrick. Not sure what kind of role Patrick would want, if he still wants to be a GM or not, maybe he would be the President but i like his work. I would also bring Don Luce back, but not as a GM.

Another story emerging about Pegula trying to use his influence to get a Penn State assistant a head coaching job:

"Pitt sources have told me it was Pederson who disregarded strong references for Bradley from Steelers president Dan Rooney and PSU-grad billionaire Terry Pegula and went his own way with the offbeat choice of Miami (Ohio) coach Haywood. I've been told Nordenberg was smart enough to take Pegula's call while Pederson ignored it."

http://blog.pennlive.com/davidjones/2011/01/will_tom_bradley_and_rob_bolde.html

The "smart enough" line clearly refers to Pegula apparently trying to leverage his big gift to Penn State to get this guy a job. He made a call to Temple as well.

It casts a tiny bit of doubt about what this guy is all about. But I'm not worried yet. Still, Nick Mendola and a very few others immediately upon hearing about Pegula and the Sabres put a theory out there that buying the Sabres could be a political move to change the atmosphere regarding regulation of Marcellus Shale drilling in New York State.

Food for thought. And, oh yeah, despite all of Bucky's sources, this is a side of Pegula you won't see him writing about. Doesn't fit the neat little narrative Bucky has crafted, for whatever reason, that Pegula is a Sabres fanatic who is committed to winning multiple Cups etc. etc.

I still think Bucky will prove to be right about this sale happening, but his column yesterday was not one of his better efforts.

1. Bradley came with other references, such as Dan Rooney, so that appears to be legit and not just buying favors for unqualified friends.

2. TP sold his business - didn't he? What would he care about shale in NYS?

1. I didn't mean to suggest Pegula was trying to help an unqualified friend. There's just something a little unseemly about giving $88 million to a university for sports, then making calls to other university presidents and athletic directors to try and influence a coaching appointment. The implication is pretty clear. As has been reported here (and never by Bucky, by the way), the Pegulas also give tons of money to Republican candidates. He's trying to change the world, I guess. But, hey, as long as his evil master plan involves the Sabres winning three or four Cups, who am I to stop him!

2. Interesting question. He's still on the board of his company. He still owns lots of land rights. I don't know how NY plays into this. I was always dubious about what Mendola wrote. I don't know how owning the Sabres would change public opinion or opinions in Albany. But it just nags in the back of the head a little.
