SabresFanInRochester Posted November 8, 2010 Report Posted November 8, 2010 http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=340399 Raffi earned player of the week honors from the NHL. Not bad for a guy that couldn't crack the lineup or contribute on Buffalo's talent-packed roster. I have not seen his play this year, or the goals, so maybe he scored five empy-netters, and it was a fluke that he earned POTW. I will use Raffi's recognition to reinforce that Ruff's system forces players to play "outside" of their natural abilities and talent; this does not mean "better." I know there are players on this roster that could perform better if they were allowed to play their game, but they are restricted because the system makes them do other things. A few other examples... Clarke McCarthur? What about Paille last year in the playoffs against Buffalo? I have never been a fan of forcing a players into a system. You should use the talent that you are given, and create a scheme that capitalizes on their abilities. I guess that's the knock I have on Ruff. I wish he would come up with something different. Deep down, I like Ruff, and I like the players on the team -- I guess I don't like the system.
Tyrannustyrannus Posted November 8, 2010 Report Posted November 8, 2010 Raffi Torres had plenty of chances with the Sabres...

It's funny, I was watching an away feed earlier in the season and they were praising Ruff for his ability to adapt his system to the talent that he's given. They pointed out that when he had the horses right after the lockout, he ran a run-and-gun, but now that his talent is thinner, he's gone to a more defensive system. Not saying they were right, just that it's funny how others perceive it.
spndnchz Posted November 8, 2010 Report Posted November 8, 2010 Ruff is all business, all the time. It works for some players, others not. I'd think rentals don't get it right away or soon enough. maybe the reason DR doesn't try so hard at the deadline.

I know the free-flowing style has definitely changed, but has the make-up and character of the team changed that much? They are not as small and quick as they were, but they are certainly not big. Between periods of the Philly game, one of the Sabres who was interviewed said we have to use our size, which he said was small, to our advantage. That is all I mean about forcing players into a system. It seemed like -- well, the rules changed from free-flowing post-lockout, and went to more clutch and grab, so we better buckle down and create a system.

I think it would be an interesting experiment if Ruff just told the team to go skate and do whatever you want. It could go well or badly, but it couldn't hurt any more than where we are now.

I think they have been doing that just about every second period. (not that Ruff has given them permission to) So far it hasn't gone to well.
korab rules Posted November 8, 2010 Report Posted November 8, 2010 I saw a period of the canucks game this weekend and Torres was a freaking wrecking ball. I did see him with a plate of nachos on the bench, though.

That and he has enough talent that his his top two lines are still better than Buffalo's first line. Maybe even three.
TheChimp Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Torres was never going to succeed here. He simply wasn't here long enough to read all 2500 pages of Lindy's System manual.

This whole Torres thing seems a bit premature. Basically his entire production this year so far came during a 3 game stretch. Other than that, there's a whole bunch of zeros on the board for him. Yes, his numbers are up from his time here, but it's so early in the season that he has plenty of time to fall off the face of the earth just like he did last year. So before some people want to label him as the one that got away, I saw we let him play a couple games. We haven't even hit the 20 game mark yet.

Lindy Ruff would turn Cam Neely into a 15 goal scoring ######.
