If I remember right, they referred to themselves as Tea Baggers before someone clued them in. But I could be wrong on that one.

This is how it started;

On January 19, 2009, Graham Makohoniuk, a part-time trader and a member of Ticker Forum, posted a casual invitation on the market-ticker.org forums to "Mail a tea bag to congress and to senate".[30] The idea quickly caught on with others on the forum, some of whom reported being attracted to the inexpensive, easy way to reach "everyone that voted for the bailout."[31]
When it became semi-organized the media caught wind of it and used the term tea bagger to describe the participants.

LOL

I'm actually very moderate but have the curse of being able to understand both sides of most issues.

I could learn to like it here. Lots of post activity and no small amount of sarcasm and wit.

I really want to be a libertarian. I don't want to tell *people* what to do. The problem is libertarian candidates always extend that to businesses and corporations. Those entities most decidedly do not have to best intentions and health of the country at heart, just making every possible cent off their customers and assets using whatever shady tricks they can think up. The banks pretty much proved that. At least I have some recourse on the government. There's nothing I can do to affect the banking industry. (That's just an example, we could talk about car safety, food quality, etc.)

The other problem is I have some real issues with the social portions of the Republican platfrom. Funny how folks that generally want the government to leave them alone also have some pretty strong ideas about how some folks should live their lives.

I believe you are wrong about the name.

THIS.

The social issues are becoming less important to the next generation of republicans. Candidates still mouth the party line to appease the blue hairs who vote in EVERY election, but things are loosening. Roe v. Wade will never be overturned, no constitutional amendment will ever take place. They will hold their ground on traditional marriage, though. Its not a matter of telling others how to live their lives, its preserving a special place in society for one of the cornerstones of our nation and western society in general.

I agree that social issues are less important to most repubs under the age of about 50. Once the baby boomers are gone I predict that marriage, sex, drug, and abortion issues will barely be discussed. And drug laws will be loosened.

Its a good forum. Lots of smart hockey talk. Very little of the TBD nonsense. Occasional forays into OT topics like this one. We generally stay away from politics, but on the heels of yesterday's elections my juices are flowing. Its amazing this discussion has remained civil.

Welcome aboard. Great quote from Burke in your sig! Someone should send it to DR and Quinn!

I do agree with this -- I'm just concerned that the current group of Republicans in power spend far too much time worrying about what people do at home on their own time and far too little worrying about regulation of business in general. I personally don't care if two guys want to get married since it has no bearing on me, but I want to know that Wall Street doesn't have free reign to screw the whole economy over (again) in pursuit of greed.

With the House back in Republican control, you won't hear much about social issues over the next two years.

There aren't enough repubs to enact anything controversial and the Dem in the big chair still has the V button.

It'll be gridlock I tell ya. GRIDLOCK !!!!

Two Bills Drive, I think (the football equivalent of SabreSpace)

Yes, it's the evil step-sister of SabreSpace. Its like Bizzaro World over there. Everything is the same, but different in a dumb, evil way.

If you are Bills fan, tread lightly; TBD Island is inhabited by cannibals.

lol too funny. I don't follow the Bills that closely, so the Bills thread here suits me just fine (and sounds like it's much more friendly).

Time to go home and watch the game... please, PLEASE let the Sabres finally show up for 60 minutes and get a home win tonight!

I filed for divorce from the Bills about 4 quarterbacks ago. But it was amicable. I'm over them but I still wish them all the best. And I don't talk about it anymore. :D

Tea baggers? Original! I love how its acceptable for the left to use a sexual pejorative to describe a political/grass roots movement.

I also find it funny that you describe the aims of a movement that has existed for only, what, two years, as "what they have wanted to do FOREVER".

I don't profess to know much about the tea party platform, but I know enough to confidently say that not a single thing you mention is on their platform.

Nice Post

What I said they want is exactly what they want. You can spin it any way you want to, but it doesn't make it false. The GOP is a party that fights for the uber-rich owners of the mega corporations to horde wealth despite the detriment to the infrastructure and the health and welfare of the general populace. The Tea Party is a fictional front of the GOP created by FOX News to stir up the ill will and fears of the brown man prevalent in poor rural America. Ironically, the very group most decimated by the GOP and its policies throughout the years. They are bigoted and fearful and highly ignorant and therefore are a perfect base of voters for a party that should never receive more votes than there are mega corporations in this country.

And you are either a dupe like the rest, or super wealthy and therefore with an actual GOOD reason to vote GOP. Period. Nothing you say to spin this argument away from these points matters a single bit. The truth is the truth.

So no different than the the last few years.

I need to stay out of political threads. The hate level can ratchet up so quickly. Chimp I just want to know which branch of government you work for? You obviouosly would be a shrinking violet in the private sector. Do you get out early in the summertime?

nobody, you're joking right? The Dems have done a lot over the last two years. A lot of damage. Thats why what happened everywhere but NY and CA happened last night. Too much was done in the last two years. Too much and way too fast for most folks.

The only reason the Republicans were able to do what they did is because they appealed to the lowest common denominator that normally would not vote in a mid-term election. (Hell, Paladino probably would be governor if upstate and downstate were separate.) They based their campaigning on a lot of yelling and screaming and generalization. I started laughing at all the Republican ads. They all white washed their opponents with the fact that they are the reason the economy still sucks. I mean, the Great Depression didn't end in two years. I'm going to laugh in 2 more years when the economy starts to show signs of life and Republicans try to take all the credit.

Also, if you don't want gays to get married, you are truly only doing it from a place of hate. You just want to stick it to those people. There is no real reason to keep gays from getting married. This country has a history of denying rights to minorities, women, etc. Gays are just the last group that's left to do it to.

No. I'm pretty sure she does not like me at all but has a secret lusting for me. Like Ted Danson and Rhea Pearlman.
