inkman Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 So figuring this topic would dominate the GDT, I figured I'd start this thread. ...and yes I copied and pasted this from the other thread. Who would be captain if not Rivet. I know Pominville gets a lot of respect in that regard. I don't know if Gaustad plays enough minutes to warrant the "C". Maybe Roy by default, not sure if the concerns about his maturity are still valid. If he has overcome some hurdle maybe he wouldn't be a bad choice. Maybe it really speaks to the lack of leadership on the team when it's this hard to think of his replacement.
inkman Posted October 29, 2010 Author Report Posted October 29, 2010 Fear the Grier. I could see it happening but that would be a poor choice. His game is slipping and he's 100 years old. Lets pick someone who will be on the team next season.
thesportsbuff Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 Roy and Pommer are the only two realistic options imo. You guys won't (that's for sure), but someone could probably make a case for Connolly given how long he's been a Sabre and his production the last 2-3 seasons. I could see Neids wearing the "C" but, like Grier, probably not the best idea going with someone towards the end of his career. I think I'd go with Roy starting next season.
nobody Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 Do they have to declare a Captain? They can do the triple A.
Stoner Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 I kind of liked the rotating captaincy. Use it as a carrot. At the same time, it acknowledges what I consider to be the uselessness of the captaincy. Or is it captain's C?

Pardon me for not remembering who it was, but on NHL Live on XM Radio they had some former Montreal captain on shortly after Gionta was named their Captain, and he was rambling on about how disrespectful rotating captaincy is to the "Captain" title itself as well as the game's tradition. Not sure if it was a direct shot at Lindy Ruff or not, I don't know off the top of my head how many other teams have used rotating captaincy recently. But yeah, just FWIW.
bills_fan_in_raleigh Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 Handing the C to Rivet was one of the biggest mistakes of recent years. My vote is Roy or Pommers they seem like leaders of this team. Rivet should have been stripped in offseason.

Skibum Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 Why not Roy? He's the best player not named Ryan Miller on the team, for going on four years. He skates hard every night, plays pretty much all situations. He plays with a lot of guts like a leader should, and he seems to be a lot more vocal than JP. I could see the team voting for Morrisonn, Leopold, or Niedermeyer - the same way they did for Rivet when he joined the team.
carpandean Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 Ruff confirmed that he was just a healthy scratch. Not one of the best six and "he won't understand; not player understands."
deluca67 Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 They can do the triple A. How about 20 P's

To me it was a pretty strong indictment of Roy's leadership capabilities that the team essentially "voted him out of office" in favor of a newcomer like Rivet. I personally don't trust Sausage with the C--- he's too inconsistent defensively and at times seems more willing to yap at the refs after a non-call rather than skate hard to rejoin the play.

They had rotating captains the season before Rivet came here and, if I remember correctly, Roy never wore the "C" (though, he ofter wore an "A".) Pominville wore it last, so if anyone was essentially "voted out", it was he.

Maybe there was speculation at the time of Roy taking over the Captaincy in the Drury-Briere void that I was misremembering--- it is strange that he didn't even get a turn at the rotation in 2007-08--- and distressing that a brand new skater was chosen in Rivet. Like Paul Hamilton has speculated recently, I'd be curious to see how Thomas Vanek would react if given the "C". It could blow up in Lindy's face or possibly elevate his confidence to a new level with the added responsibility.
gregkash Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 After benching him, there's no way Rivet should return with the 'C'... as much as it pains me to say it, Give it to Roy. He's the only one performing and maybe it does for Roy what you think it may do for Vanek. Roy plays in all three phases of the game and in the last minute he's usually on the ice. He has shown that he can come through, as evidenced by tonight.. So, I don't really think anyone else fits the mold of captaincy right now. I would give Vanek and Pomminstein the A. Make the "core" step up and lead, FORCE them to step up and lead them team.

After benching the captain, when coach says he never would do, it is such a huge vote of non-confidence that he should not return at all. Let him go, it`s the human thing to do, and find another scapegoat for the hopeless games this team has showed.
SwampD Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 I feel bad for Rivet. The core was rotten long before he showed up. He's brought in and is supposed to fix all that ails this team. Ridiculous. When he doesn't fix it, he is made the easy scapegoat and is benched and we're supposed to feel grateful that real change is coming. I'm not buying it. I know he is the captain and his benching was a statement to the rest of the team, but as bad as some thought his play was (not me) it wasn't the real problem with this team. I think a bigger statement could have been made. Again, I feel bad for Rivet. Kinda reminds me of a Sci-fi movie where the outsider is made to feel welcome until he is eaten.

All very true, but he's definitely played like crap for over a season as well.
phSabres84 Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 Craig Rivet is certainly not the biggest problem this team has...and by far not the the most immediate concern. From top to bottom this team/management/ownership has performed poorly. 1) Owner is absent; 2)GM - well we all know the old broken record of a story there; 3)Coach - His ship has sailed; and 4)this team is dismal. Goaltender not performing, defense is what it is, and the forwards are soft and skate only a 1/3 of a game. Craig Rivet, while an expedient target, is by know means the catalyst for failure of this team, merely a symptom.

I might have to hold my nose and pick Roy or Vanek. They are here long term, they are the players that are suppose to perform and they are almost stars in the league
