Two or less Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 From Bucky Gleason Toronto was willing to send Alexei Ponikarovski to Buffalo for MacArthur before the Sabres took third- and fourth-round picks from Atlanta. Buffalo ended up with prospects Jerome Gauthier-Leduc and Steven Shipley. Atlanta walked away after MacArthur was awarded $2.4 million in arbitration. Link- http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/columns/bucky-gleason/article229280.ece The good- Buffalo didn't go far and i doubt adding Poni would have gotten us past Boston anyways, and the two players they selected with these two picks are nice prospects, essp. Leduc. The bad- If they had gotten Poni, he may have worked out better then Torres did. By trading for Poni, Sabres wouldn't need Torres so in theory, we wouldn't have had the 3rd and 4th round additional picks, but we would have kept our own 2nd rounder. And in theory, they may have gotten another player for the 2nd...
thesportsbuff Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 If I would have known how bad Raffi was going to be, yes. At the time I would have preferred Torres.. he joined the team tied for the lead in goals and recorded what, one goal and a handful of assists?

bunomatic Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 Well not the amount of time they've given some in our top 6.
PromoTheRobot Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 I thought we traded for Raffi the hockey player. Turns out we got this Raffi. PTR
shrader Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 I always wonder where stuff like this comes from. "Toronto was willing to send...". What does that even mean? Was this just some kind of internal discussion or were they actually in talks with Buffalo?

Was this just some kind of internal discussion or were they actually in talks with Buffalo? That's a very good point. What would be the advantage to Buffalo or Toronto leaking that info?

This kind of reporting wouldn't end up in other parts of the paper. Just tell us who the source is, or more about the source, so we can judge the information.

Just tell us who the source is, or more about the source, so we can judge the information. The business section often has unnamed "sources" speculating about mergers, downsizing, outsourcing, etc. It is equally annoying. I note that HSBC hasn't left the tower yet, and the Spanish do not presently control M&T, "sources'" reports to the contrary.
Sterling Archer Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 1. Bucky is to be taken with grain of salt at least or a gun shot to the head at most. 2. You really think Poni is the answers to last seasons issues, because I can tell you for sure that he wasn't sticking around for this year. Yes, Torres was a train wreck. But Poni has had a career where it's been said that he does not work that hard and is, at times, unwilling to use his body. Two problems that run rampant on this team. Fraknly, we would have been better off keeping Clarke.

I wasn't mad when he was traded -- I thought the idea of adding Torres sounded pretty good, but it backfired miserably. But Clarke had a knack for scoring goals once in a while.
shrader Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 Are either of you suggesting that they should have kept MacArthur instead of making that deal with Atlanta, or just that if given the choice of Mac vs. Ponikorovski, that's where they should have kept MacArthur? Even if the prospects never turn into anything, the Sabres still come out ahead on that one. Mac was going to get that arbitration award no matter where he went, so even if Buffalo had kept him, he'd still be right where he is now, in Toronto.

I'm saying in the battle between Mac vs Ponikorovski vs Torres, I say we keep Mac and hope for the best.

Torres scored as many goals wearing a Sabres sweater last year as I did.

You omitted the 4th option, which was the picks we got for Mac, and which I think was the best option. No way on Peremiter-ofovsky. +1. What's been omitted from this thread is the fact that Poni isn't a very good player.

No. Even without the absurd award, no. You trade that guy, and you trade him as soon as the deal looks good. Apparently, there may have been two deals, one of which now looks a lot more attractive than the other. But by no means do you keep him on the team.
bob_sauve28 Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 How dare you people question Bucky!
