darksabre Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 OR, they all vacate the zone and leave a defenseman all by his lonesome behind the net with no one to pass to. Boy, for an NHL team they sure have issues with fundamentals. This is something that has been a problem for several years now and is a reason why I try not to blame coaching. There are so many basic things a lot of the players on this team don't do well, that when someone average comes in, we all fall in love with them because their ability to perform the easy part of hockey is so much better than our current guys. Bad passing, bad decisions, bad positioning, have all been problems for these guys, and I really don't think it's something you should have to coach a 20-30 year old player how to do. They should just do it.
RazielSabre Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 One of the blogs on the TSN.ca site commented on Mac's progress that 'could he be for real'. No-where did it say his sort of become known for streaky play. He did, however, comment on the impressive -14 he collected. http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/scott_cullen/?id=337365 If he does explode this season though good luck to him.
nfreeman Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 IMO, it's neither. Tallinder was a better partner for him because Morrisson can't move the puck up the ice, and Hank was good at it. But, Myers is playing as a #1 d-pairing right now, facing much better players as he did last year, when Lydman was our #1 d-pairing. Myers can't adjust and his partner should never play in that role. Myers may not have started strong this year, but the bolded statement is not true. Myers & Hank were without question the Sabres' top pair last year. The extra weight while making him more imposing, has made his footwork less lithe than last year. It looks like he's adjusting to his new body IMO. Give him three weeks, the skating will follow. Good call. Altho, nithe uthe of "lithe."

These guys are never off the ice for long over the summer, and I am sure he was skating regularly well before training camp started. Since then he has been on the ice a couple hours a day every day. He didn't grow 6 inches over the summer, he added about 6% of his body weight. He had one uncomfortable moment. Maybe he did it just to see what it felt like.
Marvelo Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 Thomas Vanish might be the worst $7 million dollar man in history. Or maybe the least motivated.
Robviously Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 Thomas Vanish might be the worst $7 million dollar man in history. Or maybe the least motivated. The Sabres had no choice but to match that offer. After failing to keep Drury and Briere, they were desperate to prove they could keep someone on the roster. (Same reason we gave Hecht his stupid contract extension during that same time period.) It all pretty much comes back to the Sabres never having a plan to win the Stanley Cup. They're constantly reacting to other teams and trying (i.e. failing) to keep up with the rest of the league.

It's easy to say in hindsight but to me Vanish signing an offer sheet with a different team -- a team from the hinterlands -- indicated that he didn't want to be a Sabre...and I'm sure he still doesn't. He's had a problem with Ruff since day one and I don't think a coaching change now will change anything. It reminds me of when Mogilny wanted out...he still had tons of breakaways but he missed them all...and they were forced to trade him. In hindsight I wished they moved Vanek for the 4 - number one draft choices. It would have been one of the greatest trades in Sabres history. But what do you want with a front office filled by a bunch of amateurs and an owner who knows nothing about hockey? A fish rots from the head down.
