While, i am not as high on Niedermayer, i think he has played below average thus far, but, McCormick has been a pleasant surprise. He hits, gets in peoples faces and fights. He is a definition of a energy guy line.

I agree. Unfortunately, I don't think his hockey is all that great.

It's kept. I still think a lot of these problems will fix themselves in time, and it doesn't mean they aren't real now.

Personaly, I would rather the team gets better and better as the season goes on than start out hot only to cool down in Feb.

This is my feeling right now. I'm not ready to call the sky is falling on this team because there is still a lot of time for things to change. Thinking about the 05-06 Sabres, they struggled out of the gate and got better as the season went on. This team could very much do the same.

I would like a friggen home win though.

That team started 4-1 after 5 games, scored 10 goals in first two games and eventually won 6 out of 8.

Thinking about last night, one of the players that stood out to me as embarrassing was Kaleta. What was with the headbutt?

The charging penalty.... the headbutt... it was a embarrassing game for Kaleta.

He does what he has to in order to draw a penalty. It did work in this case.

Not when he sat for two minors himself, it didn't. He's creating a deficit in order to get powerplays that the Sabres don't capitalize on, anyway.

Technically speaking, Neidermeyer and McCormick really replaced Ellis and mair. Ennis and Gerbe have filled Kennedy's role.

Got me there. Forgot about little timmay.

Point is there was no upgrade during the offseason. Unless one of the youngsters suddenly becomes the next ovechkin im not sure this team does any better than making the playoffs. Certainly dont have the horses in the stable to make a run.

Don't blame him for the power play guys not doing anything. Plus an occasional minor or two per game is fine as long as the Sabres continue to have a decent PK - which they do right now. Those minor penalties he gets also lead to the penalties against him.

Well, after reading all that....

We do, still, have 78 games to go people.

Keep the faith.

It could be a very long season... OK, I promise, no more "sky is falling". I'll watch tomorrow night's game and if they stink the joint out, I'm going to take a hiatus from hockey until after college football is over. You won't hear another peep

The D pairs have been a mess. It will straighten out. The same thing happening in Pittsburgh...

Not pretty to watch...but it was most evident against the Rangers.

yeah I get it and it is early, its just that it looks too much like what we have already seen from this team in so many ways. Unfortuately I bought the first round playoff loss speech that things will change and I took that to mean better. That said I agree with swamp that if they use this to get better/stronger as the season goes on fine if it's more of the same then nothing is sacred.

Bill Hoppe says it looks like Leopold with Myers. They are practicing together.

Ruff says all defensive pairs will change.

IMHO it needed to w/o the Morrison injury anyway so this is good.

Does it really matter when he does what he is supposed to do with his 7 mins or so of ice?

Frankly, he's doing everything Kaleta should be doing.

Yeah, definitely BS. Didn't like seeing that out of him.

I like the possibility of Leopold and Myers. Jordan's been one of the few bright spots so far, and maybe Myers can "wake up" paired up with him.

My reading comprehension is great, thanks. Ruff isnt beyond clueless cmon now thats just ignorance on your part for saying that. Is he getting the most out of his players ?? im not sure and you cant be either. Its not like we have great players who are arent producing. We have above average talent that is playing average with pretty good goaltending so far.

Your aim should be directed at Regier for not adding any firepower to this offense.

Fair enough, but I stand by the claim that I didn't say canning Ruff would turn this team around, I did however say you start by firing him and Regier, then move on to purging the roster, and if you haven't seen that remark by now, then I don't know what to believe.

With regards to Regier : If you look at any of my other posts here throughout the summer, you'd see that I would personally like to see him tarred and feathered, and run out of town tied behind a manure truck, but I wasn't responding to a post about Regier, I was responding to post about Ruff.

Vanek is a double 40 goal scorer, who's disappeared from the map completely. Like him or not, but he's not "average talent", and Ruff's mission to turn him into "the best two-way player in the game", is one of the reasons I call him clueless. You don't pay a 40-goal guy 7 mill. a year to become a two-way player. You teach him to be defensively sound, sure, but that's it.

You want a two-way player out of Vanek, you don't get a 40-goal guy of out him. Can't have it both ways, and seeing as two-way players are a little easier to come by than 40-goal scorers, I know which one I'd prefer. Especially when that guy's already being paid 40-goal money.

Because he scored two goals? Certainly not because of his defensive play.

What about Hossa? Zetterberg? Datsyuk? Crosby?

In other words, what about wanting him to be one of those great players who gives a hoot about being a great player and doing everything he can do to help his team win?

Were any of those players coached by Ruff?

The only true two-way player of those guys, IMHO, is Zetterberg, but I guess it depends how you define "two-way player.

I'll tell you what's wrong wanting him to be one of those great players - All of those players play on teams with a lot more, or least more veteran presence than Buffalo. Who's going to teach Vanek a few tricks on how to position himself on defense so that he's not completely gassed when the play goes the other way? Roy? Connolly? Stafford? Gaustad?

Where's our Bill Guerin or Mark Recchi?

Also, I think it's worth noting that Vanek comes nowhere near having the skating abilities of the four guys you just listed. He's simply not a player who can dart up and down the ice, he needs to pick his spots on where to turn on the gas. Half the time, he looks gassed just standing around in the defensive zone.

I have no problem with Vanek turning into Crosby, but is it realistic? No.
