Figster Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Great game, great start to the season, Derek Roy was hot tonight!!!
shrader Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Good game. Figuring out early how to avoid a 3rd period collapse is monumental. 1 win down, 81 to go! 97 to go
wonderbread Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Great game, great start to the season, Derrick Roy was hot tonight!!! careful he'll try and grab your sausage.
shrader Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 careful he'll try and grab your sausage. Who? I've never heard of that guy.
carpandean Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Made it tough on themselves at the end, but a nice win none the less. Can we play Morrisonn-Myers for 30+ minutes a game? That would be nice. Roysie on pace for a 164-goal season! Ennis for 164-assist season! Oh, and he's back to being a point-per-game NHLer (11 points in 11 regular-season NHL games.) I have to ask, though, did they have a clinic on toe-drags and between the leg moves? Because I saw Roy, Connolly, Vanek and Stafford all make such moves.
wonderbread Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Who? I've never heard of that guy. He works at the starbucks on Chippewa.
Skibum Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Great game all around. I thought the Sabres controlled the action most of the game. Next time I'd like to see 5 goals come out of all that swarming, but hey it's a good start.
Knightrider Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 careful he'll try and grab your sausage. I knew something like that was coming as soon as I saw the post.

I've seen the between the legs move three times in four games I've seen already this year. Zherdev tried it for the Flyers yesterday and I think it was Pajaarvi tried it for Edmonton, but Connolly was the only one who actually turned it into a scoring chance.
wonderbread Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 I'm listening to the post game show some guy called in and said "That besides from loving ###### he thought Derek Roy played well."
R_Dudley Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010  Sweet. They deserved to win they were the better team and I'm glad to see they were able to close the deal. Double sweet Derek Roy's on my fantasy team and got me some points tonight. Some oberservations; I like the MM's combination Meyers/Morrison and am okay with Rivet Sekera but I am not sold on Leopold and Monty. In fact based on tonight I would rather see Weber and Monty tomorrow, probably little chance of that. Ennis was good and I love the Neidermeyer, Grier, Hecht line, Timmy looked like timmy again nothin special but Vanek had some looks and Pominville was average nothin special. Anyone notice how much other teams grab Kaleta around the head, makes me wonder with his neck problems being known if thats not on purpose. I didn't think it was possible but I despise Chris Neil and Rutuu more everytime I see them. Last I'm in Bflo tomorrow and wanting to watch the game in a good venue, Anybody got any recommendations on a bar or venue to go to watch the Sabres while in town tommorrow besides HSBC ?
Sterling Archer Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Good game and the team showed that it has definitely got a bit grittier and hungrier. But, I think the real story tomorrow is going to be this Pavelec situation. I mean it kind of reminded me of Cherapanov and the reports coming off WGR weren't really shedding much light. Just good to hear that he is conscious and stable but I think it's going to rattle some cages like the Korey Stringer death.

Any place that isn't right downtown. I am yet to find a place that I really like downtown.
Hephaestus Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Anyone else worried about the slapshot Roy took off his shin? Since it was 6 on 4 and he was opposite side from the bench, he obviously couldn't get off the ice. Smart move to stay out there and be a pillar if nothing else, but you could tell he was in a good deal of pain. He hobbled off the ice eventually and at the final horn stayed on Lalime's chair when the rest of the team spilled over the boards to celebrate. Obviously if it was really serious he would have still been with the trainers, but at the same time, bone bruises are no joke either. I foolishly had hopes that Montador would have improved his puck handling this offseason, no dice there.

No doubt, Monty is going to provide some tense moments handling that puck again this year.
Sterling Archer Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 That ###### stings no matter how much padding you have and at the pro level, he's gonna take a way harder shot. I'm sure he'll be good to go. If something was broken, he would have never got up.
Hephaestus Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Not worried so much about it being broken, because like I said; he wouldn't have been back on the bench. However bone bruises are common with taking those sort of shots off an arm or leg and can keep players out a few games due to an inability to put weight on it. Crossing my fingers though.

Oh indeed, they are a pain in the ass. I'm currently fighting the lingering effects of one in my knee.

Eleven Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010  Sweet. Last I'm in Bflo tomorrow and wanting to watch the game in a good venue, Anybody got any recommendations on a bar or venue to go to watch the Sabres while in town tommorrow besides HSBC ? Downtown, if you want all of the atmosphere pre- and post-game, go to Pearl Street Grill. (Grille?) Corner of Pearl and Seneca, about a 5 min walk from the arena. It's not my favorite joint but it has a great Sabres atmosphere, and it's the most popular pre- and post-game place in town. Full menu, too. But expect to pay for parking on game night; it is near the arena, after all. If you're out in the 'burbs, consider Tom Webster's place. I think it's called Jade's (or it used to be), and it's in Lancaster somewhere. It's a neat little bar, and they took care of us SabreSpace folks last year. VanekMan had a mean-ass plate of pierogies going on.
Two or less Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 I thought the Sabres looked great tonight. They didn't score much and the PP didn't produce any goals, however, they got chances. In the first 40 minutes, it should have been a really lopsided score for the Sabres. We let Ottawa hang in there and they obviously knew besides getting their butts kicked for 40 minutes, they were still just one goal away from tying this game and they got a break late in the 2nd with the Leopold mess up. Sabres play like this tomorrow, they will blow the Rangers out of the building. Despite the mess up, i did like Leopold's game. I really like what he brings to our team. He skates the puck way up, almost got caught once when he tried it on a 4v4 but Ruff loves for the defense to bring the puck up the ice and he's definitely the best we have and have had in years, with obviously Myers. Nobody else can touch Leopold in that aspect of the game on our roster. Looked good- Best players on the ice IMO were Roy and Vanek. I thought Vanek, even with no goals, looked dangerous all game long. He had tons of chances. Somebody noted in pre-season via a source (Mike Schopp i think) that Vanek is in the best shape of his life and is the most committed he's ever been.... looked like it tonight. Will it keep up? Looked bad- Hecht and Stafford. I thought Stafford was excellent in the first, he crashed the net and fought by the boards, but for whatever reason, he disappeared. Not sure if Ottawa got under his skin or if he was just too frustrated that any of his first period chances didn't go in, but he looked bad. Actually, as the game on, he got even worse. Hecht i thought was terrible all game long in even strength situations. He was very valuable as he usually is in the penalty kill. Not sure if this stat is out there, but wonder if he led the forwards in turnovers? Looked ugly- Discipline. The Sabres got just one penalty through 40 minutes of the game but received 5 penalties in the final period. Out of the five, they received two penalties in the final three minutes of the game. If they want to play low scoring games, that has to improve. Looked promising- Penalty kill, with Leopold, Morrisonn and Niedermayer additions, i think we will have another elite PK unit. Want to see- I think they need to work Nate Gerbe into the lineup. I love the toughness of the fourth line but not sure it's needed on a nightly basis. Unless we play Philly, Ott, Tor, Bos and teams like that, i think it'd be wise to play Gerbe on the fourth line. Add some speed, some spark to that line and add depth to the PP.

I went to Puck Drop and was gonna go there for lunch afterwords and i PMed TW to see if he would be open for lunch and he told me the place didn't make it.
Derrico Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 My thoughts: Game didn't seem as close as the score, Sabres outplayed them badly through the first two periods; Roy may have played the best game I have EVER seen him play in a Sabres uniform; I wasn't as impressed with Morrison as many other posters on here, he made a few mistakes but I'll give him time to adjust; Myers on the other hand looked great again. Don't want to throw out the Norris comments yet but man the future is bright; Decent game by Vanek, too bad he couldn't cash in on any of his first period chances; Great defensive game, the goal scored on Miller wasn't his fault but he didn't have to make too many saves as a result of the good D. Nice win, let's keep it going tomorrow night!
Skibum Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Sooooooo nice to see a team from Buffalo win a game tonight. Sundays have been tough of late.
