Buffalo Wings Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 That is done quite commonly in Canadian arenas. The Star Spangled Banner is much harder to sing. Christina Aguilera agrees with you.
wjag Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 That is done quite commonly in Canadian arenas. The Star Spangled Banner is much harder to sing. They did just that in Pitt last night. He stopped singing and the crowd didn't miss a beat. It was loud. Which brings me to my question of the day; How come US Arenas don't all sing the Canadian anthem? Especially during the playoffs. They didn't sing it in Pitt last night. Seems to me MAF should hear his anthem. You know you're from Buffalo when .... you know the words to the Canadian anthem.....

I still don't understand why any of our arenas sing any anthems before league games. I'm not against it; I just don't understand why it happens here and in Canada and nowhere else. And before nothing other than sporting events.

I did a little Googling and there really doesn't seem to be a good explanation for it. One of those oddities that has become a tradition. I'd hate to see the backlash if anyone dares suggest it be discontinued, though.

Seems to me MAF should hear his anthem. They sing the Canadian anthem because the teams in the league are from the US and Canada, and/or because the fans of the team are from both (e.g., Buffalo), not because half the players are from there. If they did sing the Canadian anthem in Pittsburgh, too, wouldn't you feel for poor Kovalev or Michalek not hearing the anthems of their homelands? ;)

Buffalo & Detroit play both, I'm not aware of any other US cities playing both except when hosting a Canadian team. I doubt Vancouver plays both (except when playing a US based team) (Rickshaw could confirm) but the other Canadian teams only play the Canadian anthem before games except when they are playing US based teams.
eball Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 Oh, you'd be branded a terrorist for suggesting such a thing. Which I'm not doing; it just doesn't make sense to me. At a minimum you'd be branded "un-American" -- which is ridiculous, considering there's absolutely nothing inherently American about attending a sporting event.

I'd hate to see the backlash if anyone dares suggest it be discontinued, though. I don't mind that they do it. I mind that the singers take 2 hours to get through the songs these days. They are not funeral dirges for God's sake, they are national anthems. Pick up the pace. The tempo for the Star Spangled Banner is marked Moderato (108-120 BPM). Even at the slowest tempo of 108 BPM, the entire song should take just over a minute to sing. It averages 130, but sometimes takes well over that, almost double the length. The singers need to get over themselves and sing the anthems the way they were meant to be sung. [/soapbox]

I have heard, but cannot verify, that Detroit now plays only the American anthem unless a Canadian team is visiting.
spndnchz Posted April 14, 2011 Author Report Posted April 14, 2011 Terrorist. Oh great. Now we got the FBI up in here.
wjag Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 Oh great. Now we got the FBI up in here. They've been here all along..
Eleven Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 They've been here all along.. Why are you speaking in the third person rather than the first? Do you think that others on this board didn't pick up on who you really are?

SwampD Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 They've been here all along.. I really hope that my tax dollars are being spent some better way.
carpandean Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 They've been here all along.. With so many posters utilizing atdhe.net, which was actually seized by the FBI, I wouldn't doubt it.

Sabre Dance Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 You know you're from Buffalo when .... you know the words to the Canadian anthem..... And you know you've watched too many games on Hockey Night in Canada when you can sing the first half of O Canada! in French. (O Canada! Terre de nos aïeux, Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!)
spndnchz Posted April 14, 2011 Author Report Posted April 14, 2011 Burke just said that he will not rule out signing a player to an offer sheet in the off-season. Paging Mr Stafford, white courtesy phone...
SwampD Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 Sorry that you're disappointed, Swamp. Next thing you know, you're going to tell me that chz actually works for the Sabres.

BuffaloFansR_Crazy Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 Really a bit annoyed that Habs-Bruins series is up against Sabres-Flyers. Way to go splitting the hockey hot bed that is the North East US/ Ontario and Quebec in half. Six games one night and three the next. NBA scheduling really threw a wrench into my hockey viewing pleasure. While I'm on the subject, why did VS show two West games last night (I know the Rags-Caps OT messed up their planned schedule)? I can't believe they picked the Wings over the Pens, no way they do that if Cindy was playing.
