BuffaloFansR_Crazy Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 Holy smokes. That's a huge loss. He plays with the heart of a lion. I'm betting it was on Chara's shot. Chara unleashed a cannon blast last night and Callahan caught it. Torts has been playing a high-stakes game committing the entire team to shot-blocking. Note: Duh...I didn't finish reading it. It was Chara's shot. Got to give props to Callahan for getting of the ice after that blast. I'm pretty sure that right after that Chara unleashed another one and someone else (can't recall who) blocked that shot too. I was surprised to see that NYR are near the bottom of the league in Blocked Shots.

There was an interview with Callahan on the other day and he said that he has modeled his game on Chris Drury's game. My first thought was wondering how long before Callahan broke his wrist blocking a shot. Just it wasn't the wrist.

spndnchz Posted April 5, 2011 Author Report Posted April 5, 2011 actually...I did think the second shot that came right back out to him was a message entitled.. "Block my shot? We can do this all day" Quote from Chara about breaking Callahan's ankle: http://bit.ly/fTFRNT

X. Benedict Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 Actually I thought the one that got Callahan was earlier, but word is that this was it @35 secs into vid
FogBat Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Heres my thought, Tampa has some gaping defense issues that its about time a player like Vanek exploited these. We have some young workhorse defensemen. IF we outwork Tampa we can neutralize stamkos and lacavalier and st louis. Hard work is the key to this one. We have come almost full circle. I think I almost know what this team is made of. Another test to help confirm this teams heart. Lets go Buffalo. Wow. Talk about being prophetic!
korab rules Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Anyone see the hit by Torres against Edmonton tonight? He was ejected, and the talking heads are talking suspension. I can't for the life of me figure out why. Elbow made contact with players head, but Torres' elbow was tucked firmly to his side. Hit came from the side, but not from behind, more from the front. Looks like a case of the refs not knowing what they are supposed call anymore.

korab rules Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 That's the one. Thoughts? Head shots aren't illegal. You just can't blind side or lead with the elbow. Torres did neither.
bunomatic Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 That was an elbow and he clearly was headhunting. I'd have to include that it was what they term 'blindside' as well.
korab rules Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 That was an elbow and he clearly was headhunting. I'd have to include that it was what they term 'blindside' as well. How is it an elbow? The elbow is tucked firmly to his side. If he lifts the elbow over the head in an attempt to miss it we have the Bertuzzi situation from last week. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Blind side? Having seen it a few more times it even more from the front than I originally thought. If dead ahead of the Edmonton player is zeo degrees and straight behind him is 180 degrees, where does Torres come from. 60 degrees? What is blind side? I thought it was greater than 90 degrees.

Well technically not blindside but the player was definately in a 'vulnerable' situation that the league has clearly put the onus onto the hitter for deciding whether to take advantage of that situation or not. That will come into play when they review it. He had his head down reaching. At first I also thought Torres jumped but I think he just raised up which they all do when they hit. I see elbow. It may have been at his side but you see him raise it as he hits. My opinion its a head shot. Maybe I'm wrong.? After watching it again and seeing how eberly does a cartwheel he clearly hit mostly head and thats what sent him spinning. Headshot.

Headshots aren't illegal, and hitters arent required to let up just because the hitee is in a vulnerable position. I don't have the elbowing language in front of me, but he certainly didn't lead with the elbow. The only penalty I see here is a fighting major. I predict no suspension at all despite what the homer edmonton announcers said.

Elbow was definitely at his side. (When watching it at 'real' speed I thought he led w/ the elbow but he actually seemed to pull it in.) Looked like he was trying to put a hard hit on him, but it didn't look like headhunting to me. Interestingly, if Eberle doesn't stretch to poke the puck out of Torres' reach, Torres hits him more in the shoulder but well before Eberle gets to the puck and it ends up interference. My guess is no suspension. But I'd have to rereview what the latest edicts are on headcontact to say that w/ any conviction. (It's late and I don't recall the details of Bettman's last 5 point memo.)
billsrcursed Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Looked clean to me. I don't want to sound mean or heartless, but why doesn't anyone ever comment on the carelesness some players exhibit while skating around WITH the puck? Eberle is just as responsible for his own well being as anyone else, maybe even moreso. If you're making a play on/with the puck, you have to be aware of your surroundings, including players looking to make a check. Can't fault Raffi for Eberle not seeing him come in for a check. My bost, BTW, is assuming the hit is NOT from behind, the player does NOT leave their feet, and there is NO flying elbow diectly aimed at the head. I don't believe there was any of this here.

wjag Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Pretty close. I could call that one either way. Refs arm went up immediately and he was right there watching it.
Weave Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Boy, Torres sure does look fat in that Presidents trophy team uni. I don't see that hit as being suspendable. Torres' elbow was down. And it wasn't blind side. In fact, it looked to me like the Edmonton player realized Torres had him lined up and ducked/flinched before impact. So he saw him coming, just saw it too late to avoid the worst of the hit. Eberle was a bit vulnerable. But it was because he stretched himself out and didn't look to see who was coming before making a play on the puck. I'd want a player on my team to complete that check.
shrader Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 I love when announcers spout off idiotic stuff like that. Have they been paying attention to the way the NHL handles things? They were clearly off in fantasy land with their comments there.

spndnchz Posted April 6, 2011 Author Report Posted April 6, 2011 It can't be blindside when the guy see him coming right? Eberle puts his arm up to shield himself. Torres quote about hit: "It was a fine hit," he said. "I was finishing my hit and he had his head down. We were both going for the puck. I've got to finish my hits. He was obviously in a vulnerable position but at the end of the day I have to finish my hit or else I am out of a job. "If they are trying to get rid of clean hits like that, what's this league going to be in a couple of years?"

I have no problem with it being a penalty but not a 5 min. I was watching the game. How does the Oiler guy not get an instigator for that? Eberle then drew two more penalties during the same play while the 5 min pp was on. He took a couple of crosschecks while jamming the crease. Both were very weak calls. So the Canucks were down 5-3 for 4 mins. On the same PP an Oiler pasted Mason Raymond face first into the boards from behind and no call? This is what drives fans nuts and I'm assuming teams. You have to call guys getting faceplanted into the glass, especially after the weak calls you just made. I hope the NHL doesn't let its refs decide too many games this coming playoffs.

Carolina's Skinner, for example, does it on every third shift. You might get away with that lean 99 times out of 100, but I don't find that hit at all surprising when it happens on the 100th time. I don't have a problem with the penalty, but I don't think it's a suspension. You're out of the playoffs Eb....keep your head up.
