That would NEVER cause an increase in high hits or hits that cause an opponent's head to hit the glass/boards/ice now would it?

Let's see, it takes ~2:40 to play a game from anthem to 3 stars. A hit that comes midway through the 2nd period on a star player takes him out for ~1/3 of that period (or roughly 10% of the total time needed to play the game - 15 of 160 minutes). I can't possibly see anyone doing such a thing. Especially not in a playoff game or a regular season game down in "crunch time." /sarcasm

Hopefully, the league would have the good sense to have very tight criteria for what would force a player NOT exhibiting concussionlike symptoms to have a sit down w/ the brain doctor during a game. You don't want to make matters worse by trying to make them better.

Also, I am not a fan of Milbury's proposed 'bear hug' rule. When you start letting holding and interference back into the game overtly (no, really, it will ONLY be allowed along the boards, ONLY for VERY brief intervals, and ONLY for players coming from particular angles) it isn't too far down the road to having another exciting Calgary-TB (all tackle, all the time) series.

I've noticed that it seems to be the Milburys of the world that cry the most about a lack of legal obstruction being allowed. Could his love of 'gently holding your opponent to ease him into the boards' have anything to do w/ the fact that a huge portion of HIS game was obstruction/interference/holding etc.?

They should add an "Unsportmanlike - Turning Your Back" penalty. Much like diving/embellishment being given out with hooks/tripping/etc, turning your back could be given out with boarding penalties if the player turns at the last minute, putting himself in a vulnerable position in which the opponent would otherwise reasonably be expecting to hit him. OK, probably not realistic, but players don't protect themselves anymore.

Agree that players don't protect themselves along the boards as they should. The idea of adding a penalty for 'intentionally turning your face to the boards / turning your back to the hitter' is interesting.

I'm not sure how they'd begin to go about enforcing it. Maybe on a trial basis, they could formulate a 'draft' rule and not put it in the books and track how often it would have been called. If it looks like they'd be pretty much only weeding out behavior they want to get rid of the could then start letting players and teams know that X's move before the hit from Y would have resulted in a 2 minute unsportsmanlike penalty with this rule on the books. (Kind of like how TO started enforcing gridlock laws in the '80's and NYS started enforcing hands free cell phone laws.)

Maybe they could work out a deal w/ the NHLPA whereby turning away from the hit to draw a penalty becomes fineable? (Yeah, that'll happen. <_< )

It would be good to see them institute something to lessen the concussions caused on hits like the one to Pomminstein earlier this year without them going to either a no-check game nor the Milbury 'holding is good for the game' scenario.

i don't think players turn their backs to draw a penalty though, in most occasions. i think they're just trying to establish position along the boards, your backside being your most valuable tool towards achieving that goal.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned yet that another Bruin is up for a possible suspension after Brad Marchand elbowed Umberger in the head last night. Let's see if they let this one go too.

Boy he just has no luck huh?

Agreed. I suggested this recently.

How often do you really see this though?

The bigger problem IMHO is a player throwing himself into the boards. Terry Gregson said in a video posted on NHL.com that players are "taught" to do this. I can't imagine how a coach would live with himself when the inevitable day comes that a player who does this gets paralyzed or killed.

Gregson (Taro, he didn't get into No Goal, by the way :) ) showed some examples of players skating back into the corner to play the puck, glancing over their shoulders and turning back to the puck again. He seemed to think the onus was on the player there to turn around and brace himself. Wouldn't it be better to just say a player in such a situation can't be boarded? This is different than a player turning his back at the very last second to try and draw a call. Is the player really supposed to just abandon the puck in the corner?

The NHL is goofy as hell.

Oops, didn't see this before I posted just now.

Where does this "blame the victim" mentality come from in the NHL? Head "down"? Take it off! Take it all off!

Go to Yahoo sports puck daddy and watch the dirty elbow to the back of the head R.J. Umberger took from Brad Marchand and wait to see if its discipline that the perp receives or the usual. It remains to be seen if the leagues serious about headshots.

Marchand gets two games.

I thought I read in the Chara thread that if they had a in person 'meeting' with the league office it had to be 5 games?

I believe it can't be more than 5 games unless its a face to face meeting.

I think we should all thank Danny Briere right now...

Despite ATL gaining ONE point at least..Briere got the game tying goal with a minute in an half left in the 3rd

Just thought I'd make that note.
