Eleven Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 But didn't the add in of the spin move happen because some were saying the puck was actually going backward? I think in this case, the puck actually stops at the end which would make some difference. Not sure, though... It actually went backward at the end of the spin. He moved the puck back away from the goal and towards center ice.
G-Daddy Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 It would be tough for a ref to disallow a creative spinarama type goal because the puck moved slightly backwards towards center ice.

shrader Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 As if the puck moved on its own? St Louis MOVED the puck back. Can't do that. So wait, are you demanding that the NHL actually enforced one of their own rules? Are you new to this league?
thesportsbuff Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 When you're skating in on a shootout, someone with good hands who does a lot of dekes, the puck is always alternating between going forward and backwards. Especially if you fake a shot and pull it back -- guess what, the puck moves backwards. It counts.

Especially if you fake a shot and pull it back -- guess what, the puck moves backwards. It counts. Except you're skating towards the net. If you walk towards the back of a plane in mid-flight, you're still moving with the plane.
thesportsbuff Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Except you're skating towards the net. If you walk towards the back of a plane in mid-flight, you're still moving with the plane. Because the whole plane is moving. I'm pretty sure the whole ice surface isn't moving. Just the player and the puck. Datsyuk's famous move. Look how far back he pulls the puck. That's no different than the puck going backwards on a spinorama.
korab rules Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Except you're skating towards the net. If you walk towards the back of a plane in mid-flight, you're still moving with the plane. That's an oversimplification and you know it. This discussion is why they changed the rule to permit spin-o-rama's and such things - so the refs don't need super high speed cameras and PhD's in physics to determine whether the shoot out move is legal. As enforced, what it comes down to is whether the player is still moving forward - as long as he is doing so, the shot will count no matter what the puck is doing.
shrader Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Because the whole plane is moving. I'm pretty sure the whole ice surface isn't moving. Just the player and the puck. The skater is the plane. The puck is the person inside it. You should try slowing down that Datsyuk move. At best, the puck moves parallel to the goal line. His constant forward motion coupled with that movement of the puck and it's perfectly acceptable. edit: Korab, I don't mean it as an over simplification of that scenario. It's simply an example of how, depending on the point of focus, someone's movement can be very different. Jack is looking at the player alone, but the point of reference should be the rink itself.
thesportsbuff Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 If you don't think the puck moves backwards when Datsyuk pulls it back at the :07 point then this discussion can't continue

You are correct - but the refs are looking at the player, not the puck or the ice. I would bet that there is a memo out to the refs saying anything goes as long as the player is still moving forward. St. Louis' move was as close a call as I have seen and the refs never blinked. The amendment to specifically include spin-o-rama type moves shows the league doesn't want the focus to be on the puck.
shrader Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 If you don't think the puck moves backwards when Datsyuk pulls it back at the :07 point then this discussion can't continue I slowed it down as best I could and the puck seems to follow the arch of the crease pretty closely. Like I said, as extreme as I'm willing to say, the puck moves parallel to the goal line. You are correct - but the refs are looking at the player, not the puck or the ice. I would bet that there is a memo out to the refs saying anything goes as long as the player is still moving forward. St. Louis' move was as close a call as I have seen and the refs never blinked. I don't have much trouble with allowing this one, but it's about as close to the line as they're going to get. With even the announcers wondering right away if it's legit, there's clearly not enough information out there on that rule. The need to straighten that out. I think it's safe to say that the league intends it to be that at least one of the player or the puck needs to be moving forward at every moment. I'm not so sure that's the case with St. Louis here.
SwampD Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 If you don't think the puck moves backwards when Datsyuk pulls it back at the :07 point then this discussion can't continue I hate to tell you this, but that puck never stops moving towards the goal line.
Weave Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Does anyone want to advocate turning shootouts into an even bigger abomination by having ticky-tacky reviews of spin-o-ramas that don't break the spirit of the rule? It was an entertaining play. The last thing I want to see is a play like this get broken down into a geometry analysis in the war room in Toronto.

spndnchz Posted March 11, 2011 Author Report Posted March 11, 2011 Bob McCown on Fan590 in Toronto just said he has heard Sidney Crosby's family is trying to convince him to retire from the game. I just don't believe this.
spndnchz Posted March 11, 2011 Author Report Posted March 11, 2011 Bettman's contract for Commissioner of the League has been renewed for 5 more years. Shoot me now.

shrader Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Ugh. :death: Who is in charge of renewing that toad? The guys who continue to make money while he's on the job. Sure, with someone else they might be able to make more, but they're doing pretty well as a whole now, so why mess with it.

Each time the league has had a (relatively) inexperienced commissioner (league president, whatever) in place during CBA negotiations they've had their clocks cleaned. With the CBA due to expire after next season I don't see the owners trying to break in a new guy. The new TV rights deals are due to be negotiated soon as well. Again, I don't think the league wants somebody new running those negotiations either. The NBC deal stinks, but the league has very good contracts w/ the Canadian networks.

nucci Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 I don't believe it either, but didn't his little sister also recently suffer a concussion? You can't blame their parents for being worried. Agreed. Just being regular parents concerned for their kid.

I just don't believe this. He's been out a long time. My guess is that there's more to this than meets the eye. Last time I saw him interviewed he said something like 'there is no telling how long I'll be out'.
