bunomatic Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Phil Kessle upside: Speed in the open, stick-handles nice to the outside, wicked shot. Goal scorer. Downside: plays small, allergic to contact, doesn't go to the tough areas, poor vision with the puck, doesn't use teammates well, poor defense and back-check, carries the puck way too much, baffling attitude. Very streaky. Intangibles: Beat testicular cancer, but testicular cancer isn't the reason teammates call him Uno. Gets benched yesterday for not back-checking, and then obliquely asks to get traded. He's perfect where he is!!! Agreed. And after that give away and subsequent lack of effort to get back in the play last night followed by the whining grimace on the bench I just think he's soft and we have enough of those types. I would hope we don't make the same mistake Burke did.
thesportsbuff Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Sekera, Connolly, 1st rd pick, and a top prospect is an awful lot to give up for Kessel and Kaberle. This is where I stopped reading. To me that's barely enough for a 30 goal scorer and the closest thing this team has had to a powerplay QB in years.

I do feel for the guy and would hate to have to put up with that a$$ Wilsons mind games. If Wilson wasn't Burkes college buddy I think he'd be out of there.

If Wilson wasn't Burkes college buddy I think he'd be out of there. I don't. I don't blame Wilson at all. He's a good coach. He has a player (Kessel) that misses a shot then stops skating, so he benches him. Makes sense to me. He did a great job with team USA as well. The team Burke has put together in Toronto has never made sense to me.

He used to treat his players the same way as Wilson and he says it no longer works in todays N.H.L. Benching for not working hard is perfectly normal and gets results but in a salary cap world belittling players and calling them out to the media doesn't work. They'll simply tune you out and there's nothing you can do. Whats next, bench the whole team? Lindy said as much at the beginning of the year as well. Its better to work with the players than against them. Wilson, Keanan,Sutter, they're all dinosaurs.

Versus coverage has improved going back to when they first got the NHL rights as "OLN" but they still did too many stupid things for my taste, like doing long interviews in the middle of play. I like NBC's production of their NHL broadcasts.

As for Kessel, maybe he is indeed living up to the hype now. There were so many red flags about his attitude coming out of the US National program and his one year at Minnesota. I can't help but wonder if this is just the start of an entire career of him being unhappy.

From the link: "The "inside the glass" reporter role was an innovation under Flood's watch at NBC." Didn't they get this idea from Larry Quinn with what Rob Ray has been doing?

Can't say I'm disappointed about it, though.

darksabre Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Looks like Marc Savard is dun 4 the season. Presser @1 today I wouldn't be surprised if he's done for his career.
bob_sauve28 Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 I wouldn't be surprised if he's done for his career. I really hope that isn't the case for him or for Crosby. Hate to see this happen and I'd really enjoy watching Crosby for the rest of his career. But LaFontain and Lindros had the same things happen. These head injuries really hurt the game. Imagine if LaFontain had continued playing into the Hasek era.
Tom Backyard Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 The General scores his 17th goal, and also has an assist as the Leafs take care of the Thrashers in regulation. Sabres are 5 points back of Atlanta with 4 games in hand. It's only fair to mention that even with two points, MacArthur was a minus 1 tonight.

Toronto looked like a different team after the first period. Atlanta is officially out of gas and just up the road and with a towel in the window on the side of the highway.

Eleven Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 Damn, Avery just drew two high-sricking penalties worth a total of six minutes, in the last 3 minutes of the game against Detroit. At least one of them (the double minor) wasn't even on purpose.

Good game by Biron though, but things are really looking good for the Sabres.
