spndnchz Posted May 13, 2011 Author Report Posted May 13, 2011 Grabner re-ups with Islanders. 5 yrs 15 million. Nice job NY. That's 1 million 2 million 3 million 4 million 5 million in subsequent seasons.

shrader Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 That's a fair deal. Grabner trades in 3 years of restrictions for guaranteed money and term. I don't know. It seems a bit steep for a guy who had an NHL line of 5-6-11 prior to this year. If he falls back to earth, those last couple years are going to sting badly.

shrader Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 I think he only played a handful of games for the Canucks....that wasn't an entire season. Yeah, 20 games. Still, I can't shake the feeling that he'll fall back to earth. I'm not so sure I would have bought into his UFA days just yet. Still, it's not a contract that should hurt them in any way.

Florida didn't want to lose him...they thought they could sneak him through to Rochester. He probably would have gotten through if the Islanders started the year with something that looked like a full team.

I know they're under new management, but I don't trust a thing Florida does right now. Their entire operation revolves around saving money. That Keith Ballard trade is pure embarrassment. Edit: Apparently they did wind up using Bernier for most of the year after waiving him. Still, Ballard (and most of their recent trades) was nothing but a money dump.
wjag Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 If it goes through, most interesting 2 Q's to me would be: 1. Would Yotes be willing to let Atlanta/Winnipeg have the rights to the "Jets" back? 2. Does Nashville move to the SE or does Detroit get its wish and get moved to the East (and if they do, who gets stuck in Hockey South - Filly would make the most sense geographically; then Buffalo or Detroit would take their place in the Patrick; but I don't see the Snyders being willing to slide over)? That there is a heep of bad options. Move the Isles out. No reason two NY teams should be in the same division.
bunomatic Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 That there is a heep of bad options. Move the Isles out. No reason two NY teams should be in the same division. The reason is to stoke the rivalries. Or at least thats what they've led us to believe.
Two or less Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Got some sad news to report via twitter.... Derek Boogaard has passed away at age 28. http://rangers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=562775&navid=DL R.I.P.

Derek Boogaard has passed away at age 28. http://rangers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=562775&navid=DL R.I.P. Day-umm. that is sad news indeed. IIRC he was out most of the season with concussion issues. I wonderif it is related?
Two or less Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Day-umm. that is sad news indeed. IIRC he was out most of the season with concussion issues. I wonderif it is related? Absolutely. He had serious concussion problems but doctors said he would be ready for training camp... but if it's connected, that becomes a real scary situation for the NHL.

Yeah, if it is related to post concussion syndrome you can let the specualtion run wild as to where that would lead the NHL.
bunomatic Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Yeah, if it is related to post concussion syndrome you can let the specualtion run wild as to where that would lead the NHL. It might have been suicide. Just speculation on my part but they haven't released details and with depression being a side effect of post concussion syndrome suicide can't be ruled out. Regardless, rest in peace.
Taro T Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Day-umm. that is sad news indeed. IIRC he was out most of the season with concussion issues. I wonderif it is related? I'd prefer it to be that than the steroid related issues I immediately thought of. (John Kordic was my immediate reference point. Hope I'm wrong.)
thesportsbuff Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 I know it's just a Sabres fan board but out of respect I don't think we should speculate on what may or may not have caused his death. I'm sure we'll find out in a few days. R.I.P. Mr. Boogaard
Kristian Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 Absolutely. He had serious concussion problems but doctors said he would be ready for training camp... but if it's connected, that becomes a real scary situation for the NHL. If that is indeed the case, I can hear Colin "Assclown" Campbell already : "Boogaard needs to keep his head up". R.I.P. 28 is way too young.

My first thought as well. What a bummer.

Always sad.
spndnchz Posted May 14, 2011 Author Report Posted May 14, 2011 Always sad to hear of a death. Especially someone my age. Throughout his career, Boogaard sought to make a difference in the communities he played in, taking part in numerous charitable endeavors. Boogaard was a supporter of the Defending the Blue Line Foundation, a non-profit charitable foundation whose mission is to ensure that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the great sport of hockey. While with the Rangers, he created "Boogaard's Booguardians," hosting military members and their families at all New York Ranger home games. In addition, he made multiple appearances with partner organizations of the Garden of Dreams Foundation, the non-profit charity that works closely with all areas of Madison Square Garden, including the New York Knicks, Rangers, Liberty, MSG Media, MSG Entertainment and Fuse "to make dreams come true for kids facing obstacles." http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=562783&cmpid=nhl-rxl-twt

BetterDays06 Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 New York Rangers Derek Boogaard passed away last night at age 28. It has not been released yet of what has caused the death.
