bunomatic Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I won't dispute that.. I mean, Briere scored every big goal when Philly needed a big goal. He was clearly the "MVP" of the series. But I think JVR was perhaps the most dangerous skater overall on the ice... he had 40+ shots on goal that series, though I don't remember how many goals. This might be a terrible comparison but he was kind of like our Gerbe from the regular season -- he wasn't necessarily scoring and racking up points, but he was making things happen and heavily involved in cycles and the forecheck. For sure. Gerbe with size.
thesportsbuff Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Yikes. I definitely had Boston underrated... thought Philly would blow them away to be honest.
OverPowerYou Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 It seems like Philly has the worst luck in overtime at home. SCF game 6, against the Sabres game 5, and today.
OverPowerYou Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I love it when philly loses :clapping: I love it when Boston loses though. I want both teams to lose.
thesportsbuff Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I love it when Boston loses though. I want both teams to lose. Quite the conundrum as a Sabres fan. I don't usually buy into the "root for the team we lost to" thing, especially if it's Philly or a NE team, but watching that series, there were several moments when I truly thought "Wow, Philly has got to be the best team in the East." Crisp, precise passing all series. Sustained pressure in our zone for what seemed like minutes at a time. Three and a half scoring lines. I just couldn't envision them getting beat... or maybe I just couldn't envision anyone else playing as well as they played vs Buffalo. It's looking more and more like that isn't the case, but I'm kind of pulling for Philly to blow everyone out from now on so I can say "at least Buffalo came closest."
Braedon Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Can someone PLEASE explain Tim Thomas to me? The man didnt have a goals against under 2.5 until he was 33 years old. How is that possible? He's aging like wine.

He's aging like wine. I offer no explanation, but when they were showing highlights (I think TSN highlights on NHLN), they showed no less than FIVE Thomas saves in a row where Seidenberg was the man scooping up the rebounds and getting the puck out of danger. Seidenberg's has had a great season I think.
Kristian Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I love when Briere beats up on players twice his size like Chara. Why did we ever get rid of him? We preferred intangibles. We just forgot to check if those intagibles preferred us. Clusterf*ck of the decade

He's aging like wine. I can't explain this guy. He looked so sharp in the 3rd period last night. What got me tho, and this is a bit late, the 1st game of this series Philly ran him in the 1st and got an interference penalty. The "running the goalie" so far seems to have halted since that penalty. So now the refs change in the 2nd round? Not that it would have mattered for Buffalo but c'mon! Where did Philly's "fore check" go? This series is a classic example of what Buffalo needs...

Where did Philly's "fore check" go? This series is a classic example of what Buffalo needs... Only works on teams that can't put together two straight 10ft passes. No seriously, Buffalo's passing in their own zone and subsequent failure to clear the zone really made Philly's forecheck look much more dominant than it is. Also, it's evident that even the Bruins are a much faster team than us, which gives Philly fits when they breakout. When did we become so slow, BTW? These days, Vanek is of average speed on this team. He used to be one of the slowest guys we had, and it's not that he became a better skater down the stretch.
X. Benedict Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Mike Schopp brought this up during the regular season in regards to Tampa. Look at what they have accomplished during the tenure of the Staus Quo. They were at the very bottom of the league, built a Stanley Cup Champion, returned to the bottom and have recently passed the Sabres as Stanley Cup contenders. Wasn't it Roloson that led the Oilers to the Finals in 2006. If he didn't get hurt who knows how that series would have ended. Hmmmmm. I don't know what Mike Schopp says but there were no mind-blowing moves in Tampa IMO. They've had St. Louis, Lecaveliar for years, Ryan Malone for a few....I would say it is mostly a matter of Hedman and Stamkos maturing that has made the difference. Big move...Dominic Moore ;)

Bruins aren't faster than Buffalo at all (they have poor team speed IMO). They are having as much trouble with the Philly forecheck as Buffalo did. Their difference is net presense, and capitalizing on rebounds. Something that Buffalo couldn't do.

I think the net presence is the biggest thing. I would have thought Julien's defensive style would make them more prepared for the Flyers forecheck, but as you said, they are having just much trouble. The difference is that the D isn't necessarily out of position when once the Flyers set up in their zone.
carpandean Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Big move...Dominic Moore ;) I know that he had a tough time scoring in Buffalo due his wrist injury, but Moore is actually a great depth player in the playoffs. He's not a top-line talent, by any means, but he does have some skill. Add to that his penalty killing and the fact that he always gives 100%. Definitely not a cornerstone of a team, but a very good support piece. I still have no problem with that trade back a couple of years ago (a support player who could reduce the PK load on your starters, chip in some offensively, and provide scoringline center depth when needed), and believe wholeheartedly that had he not been injured, Sabres fans' opinions of him would have been much different.

I was upset that Buffalo didn't re-sign him.
nobody Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 And so it continues, yet another overtime game. This must be a record. Record is 28. Funny or ironic or something - I did a search for 'nhl playoffs overtime record' and get an Arizona paper: Tucson Citizen
OverPowerYou Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 I'm leaning towards wanting Philly to win this series over Boston. Both teams have former Sabres on their squads. Philly has Briere and Boston has paille. I made my decision based on this - Briere was way better than Paille ever was when they were in Buffalo. Briere was extremely likeable, scored a whole lot more, and had more heart than Paille ever had (subjective opinion). Yes, you can say that Paille was hard working, but that never won us playoff games here in Buffalo. His work ethic in the 2 non-playoff years gave us nothing, whereas when we had Briere, we were reaping the benefits of his hard work and winning in the playoffs Briere > Paille Flyers > Bruins Flyers in 7 Enough said :D

He was free and clear for 160 ft.
X. Benedict Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Don't know about game 7's, but he's never lost an elimination game, that may be the one you're referring to? I was going to say that he played in the 2006 games 7 SCF...but I forgot that by then the Hurricanes were in the habit of running goaltenders.
shrader Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 responsible center depth is hard to find. I was upset that Buffalo didn't re-sign him. It's funny how that works. Pretty much no one wanted Moore last year. He signed right at the start of the season with Florida.

Braedon Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Wow. 2 goals in 24 sec by TB to go up 4-3. The caps looked absolutely awful on D that last one.
