He was congratulating me on a charity auction win (I get to take my dad to see the NHL HOF, to a tour of the "war room" where the NHL reviews the goals--yes, you bet I will tell everything I see--AND to the Sabres game AT Toronto on 11/6), so I had a brief moment:

ME: Hey, thanks for helping out my friends with their event. Great event, and etc....

ROBERT: Very nice to be here, etc....

ME: Gotta tell you, when I was about eight, the words "John Van Boxmeer" entered my vocabulary, and I was so angry. He turned out okay, but man, was I angry to see you go.

ROBERT: (Surprised on his face that anyone remembered the trade) Well, that's pro sports. It's business.

ME: I know that now, but tell that to an eight-year-old. I'm telling you, I was really p*ssed to see you go.

ROBERT: Thanks; great to hear, etc....

Was a fun moment. Not as fun as when Don Luce autographed my McDonald's napkin when I was five, not as fun as running into Perreault at church regularly when I was a kid, but still cool.

Rick Martin (already had met him a couple of times) and Derek Smith also were there.

Nice! Thanks for posting.

Ah, van Boxmeer. He was a the original one-trick pony: great shot from the point, but awful on D. More turnovers than Betty Crocker.

This is the second time I heard the words "Van Boxmeer" tonight. Kinda eerie.
