So the Ducks game will not be on TV? Versus doesn't say it will show it and MSG won't either because they can't? Seems odd. That article is just full of good news: "A trio of broadcasters will step into the booth when Jeanneret takes a pair of scheduled vacations this season. Mark Jeanneret, the son of Rick Jeanneret and play-by-play voice of the AHL’s Portland Pirates, will call the action on December 27 (at Calgary) and December 28 (at Edmonton). MSG host Kevin Sylvester returns to the booth for a fourth season when he fills in for four games: January 1 (vs. Boston), January 4 (at Colorado), January 6 (at San Jose) and January 8 (at Phoenix). These four games will also feature a three-man booth, as Rob Ray moves upstairs to join Sylvester and Neale. Dan Dunleavy will handle play-by-play duties on January 25 in Ottawa. Dunleavy is a sportscaster for the FAN 590 in Toronto, and also does play-by-play for the World Junior Hockey Championship on the FAN Radio Network across Canada."

Versus doesn't say it will show it and MSG won't either because they can't? Seems odd. That was the plan for around four games last year, but after fan backlash, they split the cost with MSG to purchase and air the local feeds. I don't know if they will see the same pressure for just one game, but you'd think that they'd just plan to do the same thing again. We'll see.

But the difference here is, Versus has rights to the Sabres game, but is showing Devils/Capitals on that night. I guess MSG can't show it because it's blacked out due to versus.

Yeah, the only good news I see is that maybe Rob can cut the amount of time Harry is talking even more. Rick's son? Unless he's improved a lot (and there's not much you can do about your voice), not good news. More Kevin and no Paul Hamilton? Bad news. As for Rick, this is getting ridiculous. There are lots of people just begging for a chance to do a job that only a couple dozen people in the world hold. If he can't do the job anymore, retire and let someone else have their shot. It's been a nice run, and I would miss him tremendously. But, come on. This is actually pretty painful to watch.
spndnchz Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Points from article: MSG taking 72 broadcasts in HD Anaheim 12-21-2010 will not be seen on TV as it falls during an exclusive Versus broadcast window. (no our game is not on) Preseason game on Tuesday, September 28 against Ottawa will be aired on MSG at 7:30 p.m. The game will take place in Dundas, Ont., as part of the annual Hockeyville celebration. Buffalo will appear eight times on Versus (all in HD), and once on NBC as part of the network’s regional Hockey Day in America coverage on February 20 versus Washington. The Sabres also appear on NBC’s flex schedule for two games: January 23 at NY Islanders, and March 6 at Minnesota. Both games are currently scheduled to air on MSG. Rick Jeanneret and Harry Neale return to call the action for MSG Networks’ telecasts. When Rick's on vacation: Mark Jeanneret, the son of Rick Jeanneret and play-by-play voice of the AHL’s Portland Pirates, will call the action on December 27 (at Calgary) and December 28 (at Edmonton). MSG host Kevin Sylvester --January 1 (vs. Dunleavy is a sportscaster for the FAN 590 in Toronto, and also does play-by-play for the World Junior Hockey Championship on the FAN Radio Network across Canada. Lexus shootout -- Kevin Sylvester will be joined by Rob Ray and Mike Robitaille (yay!)

I would say that RJ is probably thinking along those lines and all of these play-by-play guys are auditioning for his job. I think we all agree that no one does it like RJ, so whomever takes over will have to be at least tolerable until our ears get accustomed.
beerme1 Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 The RJ thing seems like he is staying on until his son is given the job. No metion of Robie? Last I heard they didn't think he would be anywhere near ready to come back and yet no mention of Danny Gare either. My guess is they will continue to allow Danny Gare (as he is unemployable anywere else) to fill in while Robie recovers till Christmas or so. Hey Danny Merry Christmas! Get out, Robie's back lol  Oh and hey kudo's for a change to our pal Larry for getting all the games in HD!!!! Way to catch up with the rest of the league after they have been doing it for a years. Good job Larry! :clapping:

I've never heard Rick's son call a game, but I'm sure he can't be that awful that you're willing to write him off already -- you know, before ever calling a Sabres game. Anyway, the first bit of "good news" I was referring to was getting to listen to Sylvester's hilariously bad play by play. I swear I have never laughed so hard in my life than when he was calling a game last season.... I was also probably blitzed beyond all recognition. And Rob Ray in the broadcast booth should be interesting. Hopefully he will call Harry out on some of the stupid ###### he says, 'cause that's just kind of how Razor is. It's sure to be some quality entertainment. As for your little rant about Rick, I have no idea what that's about. I mean, have you EVER liked anything Sabres related? Anytime anybody says something about them you dig and claw to find reasons why they suck. The front office, the team, the jerseys -- I'll give you those. But now the broadcast booth? The one thing unique and borderline legendary about the Sabres is "painful to watch." Rick isn't "too old" to call games, and although he's surely lost a step over the years he's hardly "painful to watch(hear?)" Furthermore, you seem to long for him to retire, yet you just single handedly tore all of his potential replacements apart in this thread, so I don't know what you expect them to do. Maybe you're just impossible to please. If you weren't one of the more active posters on the site I'd probably have you on ignore.

I was hoping that they would bring Danny back again this year and he and Robitaille could do the intermissions and the pre & post games without Sylvester! Guess that would be wishing for too much. :)

It's been a nice run, and I would miss him tremendously. But, come on. This is actually pretty painful to watch. He can't do the job? He's taking a short vacation around the New Year and then one other game (who knows, maybe somebody in his family is getting married or something like that); a grand total of 8 games. Most of the fanbase still seems to love his play calling. Sure, there are the occasional "really Rick?" moments, but they're few enough to be funny rather than painful. Of course, next to Harry, anything seems pretty minor. You may think he's past his prime, but I'm willing to bet you are in a very small minority, so staying is hardly "getting ridiculous."
spndnchz Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Rick is, as always, taking his vacation during the longer road trip out West. It gives him a break from X-mas to Jan 10th.

"Doing the job" is doing all of the games. When you need eight games off at midseason, you can't do the job anymore. Staying isn't what I was referring to as "getting ridiculous." The time off is getting ridiculous. What's next? He does home games only? Then division home games only? Then only home playoff games? Maybe eventually his spirit can call the second period of home playoff games. Ted will do the first and third like back in the day. There have been more Really Rick moments the last two seasons than the first 30-some of his career. He called Adam Mair Lindy Ruff a bunch of times last season! At least twice now when he's been videotaped in the booth, you can see a big old Pepto Bismol bottle sitting in front of him. I don't think he's in good health, and he sounds like he's struggling a lot of nights. I love the man too much to want to endure a long, painful goodbye. It's probably just about time.

So the Ducks game will not be on TV? Versus doesn't say it will show it and MSG won't either because they can't? Seems odd. Versus has a few "exclusive windows" - during these games no other games can be shown on TV by the regional network in the United States. So the Ducks/Sabres game, Blues/Thrashers game, and the Flames/Blue Jackets game won't be broadcast anywhere by anyone in the United States. The only chance - and this is slim - is that NHL Center Ice subscribers can get access to an alternate feed of the game (like an in-house stadium feed or something) but that's a slim chance.

I appreciate the comment - it just shows I have too much time on my hands  I'll see what I can come up with - that way we'd have a reference on Sabres, HD, Time Warner, DirecTV, Blackouts, etc.
spndnchz Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Comcast bought NBC from GE. Comcast owns Versus. I would expect some type of Versus-NBC Sports merger in the future. Both NBC and Versus TV deals expire at the end of this season.

Maybe eventually his spirit can call the second period of home playoff games. Ted will do the first and third like back in the day. You do realize that he's still calling 74 games, plus playoffs? It's not like a football commentator taking 8 games off. As chz pointed out, he takes the long West Coast swing off each year; is that really so much? To me, it just seems like part of the game to hear his voice. I'm not sure that I even catch each mistake, because I'm so focused on watching the game (which I can actually see) that my mind probably just corrects them. It's more about the tone of his call. I even miss it when I catch a live game.
SwampD Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 My points - RJ has definitely lost a step or two. The Devils have different announcers all the time, as Doc has to do many national games. No big deal. Mark J is not that bad. I would like to see Hamilton. I would like to see Gare but I think he works for the Blue Jackets, doesn't he? HD hockey ROCKS!
nfreeman Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 The key question for us out-of-towners is, of course, whether the HD feed will make it onto CI -- since it didn't for most of the last 2 years. If anyone knows anything about this, please speak up!

If anyone knows anything about this, please speak up! Yes it will - as long as you have DirecTV. The dispute was between the NHL and MSG and it was resolved in April of last year and MSG HD returned to DirecTV at the tail end of the season. If you've got CI on Dish - no luck. If you've got CI on cable you'll probably get a few Sabres games in HD
