I wonder whether the plan is to play him in Portland. Maybe they had an arrangement with him in which he would look around for a while and try to get an NHL job, and if he didn't get one he could come back here on a 2-way deal.

Finally, the missing piece.. Whew...

I totally agree. Finally Darcy has found the power forward that will put us over the top. It took him a while, but he came through for us in the end!

Look out Chicago, here we come!!!

eventually, i will get this down pat, but for now i ask again: 2-way deals are one thing, while clearing waivers when you're sent to the ahl is another, yeah?

so, is it the case that, in theory, another team would be able to claim ellis if we were to send from buffalo to portland? not that i'm all that concerned - just wondering.

for me, i like ellis just fine on the 4th line.

Yup. Last year was a one way this year two way. $105,000 AHL and $625,000 NHL.

Did they just white-out Kennedy's name on that contract offer.

In this case I doubt the Sabres are too worried about losing Ellis.

1 way deal - player receives the NHL rate of pay regardless of whether he plays in the NHL or the minors.

2 way deal - player receives the NHL rate of pay when he is on NHL roster (whether he dresses for games or does the Peters shuffle in the press box) and receives a lower salary when he is on a minor league roster.

Waiver eligible - players that have too few seasons of experience +/or too few games of NHL experience may be sent to the minors without having to clear waivers. If a player has to clear waivers to be sent down, and does clear waivers, and he is subsequently brought brought back up; he may be sent back down w/out reclearing waivers provided he hasn't played in 10 additional NHL games or been in the NHL for more than 30 days since last clearing waivers. Players that are too young to need to pass through waivers to be moved down also are exempt from reentry waivers.

Reentry waivers - (except for a handful of players w/ too little NHL experience - so called 'career minor leaguers') players that had to clear waivers to be sent down and are making too much money as an AHLer ($105k +) need to clear reentry waivers before being brought back up into the NHL. This is in place to keep teams like the Strangers from stashing a lot of NHL level talent on their AHL affiliate. If a player is claimed in reentry waivers, the team that lost him has to pay 1/2 of his salary for the remaining portion of the contract.

Unconditional waivers - A team cuts a player and cuts all ties to that player. After the player clears these, he is an UFA.

The Huet loan to the Swiss club is interesting. He can be loaned per Article 13; but a strict reading of it states that he'll have to be waived by Chicago w/in 12 days of the regular season starting in order to go to that Swiss club. (To be loaned he has to clear waivers during 'the regular season waiver period' which doesn't start until 12 days prior to the start of the regular season.) If so, then a team w/ a goaltending issue right before the season starts could claim Huet and the Hawks and Swiss team would no longer have his services. But it isn't cut and dried that he'd have to clear reentry waivers to play again for the Hawks, as the section regarding reentry waivers specifically states that reentry waivers are for players playing in the minor leagues. I expect that he'd have to clear reentry waivers for him to play w/ the Hawks again, but wouldn't say that he absolutely would have to.

And I'll add this to what Taro posted. We bring up the question of whether or not it's a two-way deal because the Sabres are not going to pay NHL money for a guy to play in the minors. Don't go asking for some link to back that up, it's pretty much just common accepted knowledge at this point.

+1

[a bunch of CBA science]

thanks, taro.

i won't fault them for that.

OK, but back to Kennedy. What makes anyone think Kennedy wasn't going to make this team, or was going to make the team but be unable to stay up? Maybe I'm overestimating the way he played toward the end, but I bet conventional wisdom on this board at the time was that Kennedy was here to stay. Where's Eleven's thread?

Sure, conventional wisdom says he was going to be full time next season. But we are talking Darcy logic (forced on him by Quinn most likely) which says they would send him down to save money and he wouldn't complain because he is playing for his home town organization and knows he will get called up sometime.

Is this confirmed? It had better be a two way deal. Good depth signing but I really hope we never see him in a sabers jersey again.

He would have been here to stay as long as he didn't regress this year. If the team wants to build in that level of insurance for their lower tier players, I can't blame them for it.

I'd have expected him to not get sent down, but wasn't sure where he fit in this year (at least until the inevitable injury bug hits). The 3rd line appears set on paper, and I didn't see him beating out any of the top 2 LW's or C's nor is he the prototypical 4th liner. I had expected that he'd be on the 4th line, but McCormack-Gaustad-Kaleta makes for more of the traditional energy line than does Kennedy-Gaustad-Kaleta.

I'd expect that next year at least 1 of the 3rd liners won't be back and there's the distinct possibility that Connolly won't be back; so Tim K fit in much better into next year's lineup.

It's a shame he's gone, I did like his potential to eventually fill Hecht's role on this team. But he clearly is a victim of poor advice from his agent.

And, on a slightly different note, it looks like the bottoming out of the market for mid-level players that seemed to be an inevitable consequence of having a salary cap has finally arrived.

Let's just see if any decent trades happen before the deadline. Besides, Ellis ain't THAT bad.

Yup confirmed. The 105 k in the AHL is important. It allows the Sabres to bring him up for the 10 games without him having to be waived or clear re-entry waivers.

I would like to see at least a half-hearted attempt at getting some good key players here that would help push the Sabres over the top and make them potential Stanley Cup finalists. My frustration is that I really don't see that happening. Not now and possibly not ever. I wonder what it would take to get someone to wake up and smell the coffee so to speak?

I saw this link on Facebook, and there's a certain line near the bottom:

"When you have never had a home team win something big and know the world will end when it does!"

Reminds me of the second to last verse at the very end of the Book of Revelation.

What is a power forward? It certaintly isn't the potential player who can help Vanek on the top line right?! :death:

Size within the top 6? We dont want that.
