Oakstream Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/34718-The-Hockey-News-201011-NHL-regular-season-predictions-No-6.html Why: Where this team ultimately ends up clearly depends on goaltender Ryan Miller. When the reigning Vezina Trophy winner is healthy, the Sabres are lethal; when he’s out of the lineup, well, the Sabres struggle to maintain a place in the top eight. Toni Lydman and Henrik Tallinder were the noteworthy losses in the off-season, though free agent signee Jordan Leopold should replace at least some of Lydman’s offense and Shaone Morrisonn should step in nicely for Tallinder. Rob Niedermayer was brought in to provide some depth on the forward lines, but it’s the headliners Thomas Vanek, Jason Pominville and Derek Roy who need to find their production from a few years ago. Also, if Tyler Ennis can continue what was a promising performance at the end of the season and in the playoffs, Buffalo will have another source of offense.
shrader Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Replace "some of Lydman's offense"? I guess he was a good assist guy, but offense is one of the last things that comes to mind when I think of Toni Lydman.
FolignosJock Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 i have to agree but i dont understand what they mean by lydmans offense???? that was non-existant. i definately think this is a better team the defense is better and the offense is pretty much the same with a little more of a veteran presence

darksabre Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 I think you both owe ME a beer. Right?

gregkash Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 at least we're not the islanders.. Why: When your highest paid player is playing in the Kontinental League, you know your team isn’t a Stanley Cup contender. Alexei Yashin will make $4.75 million against the salary cap in 2010-11 and Rick DiPietro, who played only eight games last season, weighs in at $4.5 million. John Tavares, Josh Bailey, Kyle Okposo and the rest of the kids will take another step forward, but there are still too many holes in the depth chart for the whole team to take a leap.

I'll take Darcy's caution over this idiocy anyday!
darksabre Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Wow! I'll take Darcy's caution over this idiocy anyday! It's really not hard to be better than the Islanders though. It's like comparing real NHLers to Andrew Peters.
Stoner Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Wow! I'll take Darcy's caution over this idiocy anyday! At least the Islanders tried to do something. And, in the end, both franchises have ended up in the same place -- watching the Cup presentations on TV. New GMs, new coaches, big player signings, free agent splashes... I bet the average die-hard Islander fan has been entertained more than the average die-hard Sabre fan since the lockout. Sometimes change and hope and frustration and disappointment trump more wins in the standings. Most Sabre fans are dead inside. Darcy's "education" has done a number on us -- hey, teacher, leave them kids alone.

I think we all know damn well that if we had Yashin and DiPietro signed for those contracts, everyone here would be even more pissed at Darcy than they are right now. Furthermore, I think the Sabres will do well, but The Hockey News also has Ryan Miller as the #3 ranked player in the NHL. He's good, but he doesn't belong that high when compared to some of the offensive talents in the league. Maybe Top 10, but certainly not #3. The whole list was awful.

I'm trying to say this as kindly as possible, but that has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever seen posted on this board.

Darcy's "education" has done a number on us -- hey, teacher, leave them kids alone. I'd take that bet. If I had to choose a single word to describe the Isles fans that I know (granted, a small sampling) and how they feel about their team, I'd go w/ 'embarassed'. I'd suggest 'frustrated' would also work. I would say that the choice of Tavares was 'encouraging' but that the Isles fans have had precious little 'entertainment' in the past 5 seasons. The Sabres team that came out of the lockout was on the level of the French Connection squads for entertainment. And I would take last year's Sabres team over any Isles squad of the past 5 years in terms of entertaining play as well.

I know I'm a grumpy old-timer on this (and most other things), but that arena is a great place to see a game. It's like the Aud was -- small, tight, cramped, fans on top of the ice, and loud. When the place is full and the crowd is into it (as they were in the 2007 playoffs) -- I'd rather be in an arena like that than one of the new ones any time.

Kristian Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Wow! I'll take Darcy's caution over this idiocy anyday! Very true, however the GM responsible for most of this travesty not only managed to get rid of Connolly and Pyatt, but got Mike Peca in return.

The point remains that, for a fan, changing coaches and changing GMs and picking first and throwing gobs of money around is entertaining. We can sit around with our noses in the air, thinking how superior the Sabres' franchise is to the Isles', but that would be -- wait for it -- nonsense. Both franchises fail; it's just a bit more fun to watch happen on the Island. Wang vs. Golisano? Milbury vs. Regier? Nolan vs. Ruff? Come on.
