jpgr909 Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 At first glance it looks like this puts the Devils well over the cap. If that's correct, then the question becomes, who's now in play from that roster? Either way, this should make things a bit more interesting.
static70 Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 I would think Rolston would be asked to waive his NTC or get sent down? Maybe Langs and Elias? Hard to say what NJ is going to do.
shrader Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 I would think Rolston would be asked to waive his NTC or get sent down? Maybe Langs and Elias? Hard to say what NJ is going to do. Rolston signed his contract when he was 35. He counts against the cap even if he's sent down. If they hadn't just brought him in, I would say that a guy like Arnott might be on the list of likely to be shipped out. Zubrus is probably up there though. I hesitate to mention him, but Langenbrunner might be a likely candidate too. He's got one year left on that deal and would be a relatively easy move, but he's such a Lou-type player.
Tyrannustyrannus Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 I've been to Devils game and the arena is never even half full. It's pathetic, I have no idea where they get money to pay their players. If its against the Sabres, the Buffalo fans usually outnumber the Devils fans.

I'm just glad this NHL style Lebron James fiasco is over. I could care less where he went from a Sabres fan perspective... Now, does this finally open the door for the long overdue Kaberle trade? Does the Gagne trade to Tampa open the door for a Lecavalier trade? Do the Sabres actually sack up and make a play for Frolov or Sharp? Patrick Sharp is my number one choice by a landslide. Frolov is just another lazy, skilled Russian enigma.

If its against the Sabres, the Buffalo fans usually outnumber the Devils fans. I've been there plenty of times, and you're totally right about the Prudential Center being empty, but since Newark is still in the NYC metro area, the Devils have a large corporate base to pull from when selling off their executive seats and other types of premium seats. But, still, of course, a salary cap is a salary cap...

PalmTreeMafia Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 17-year contract? That strikes me as a bit...lengthy?
inkman Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 17-year contract? That strikes me as a bit...lengthy? It's just the newest loophole GM's are using to usurp the CBA's rules. I'm sure the contract is front loaded (paying 8-10 million the next few years) leaving nothing on the backend but a few million spread over several years which in turn can be spread out over the cap twice the remaining years on the deal. So NJ sends Ilya paking with 10 years left on the deal probably absorbing a $500,000 cap hit for the next 20 years. Brilliant isn't it? Maybe there will be ###### to pay for a deal like this but more often than not, teams that have been dishing out large deals have been getting fruitful returns.

Or maybe they are saying 'screw it,' we won't be running the team in ten years, who cares what the budget looks like then?

If they send him packing after 10 years, they face 7 years of a $5.33MM cap hit and 7 more years of $0.33MM cap hit. (Based on the $102MM payment structure Chz came up w/ earlier in the thread.) Of course that assumes that the way the cap is structured doesn't change appreciably during any of the 2-3 new CBA's that will be entered into before this contract expires. Considering Lamiorello will be an architect of at least the next CBA, don't count on the Devils facing a $5MM+ cap hit when he gets let go. It also means that they'll only be paying him $0.33MM each year for the last 14 years he ends up on payroll. There might be a team looking to stay below the Cap floor that would take those payments to be able to have their payroll look $5MM+ larger on paper than it actually is. (Again, assuming there are no appreciable modifications to the salary cap. Likely, a poor assumption.)

Interesting. If Kovalchuk suddenly becomes injury-prone or decides to coast for the remainder of his career, there will most certainly be heck to pay. But I guess in that case, NJ simply buys out his contract. They can absorb the loss of all that money because they're in a big market. Darcy "Small Market" Regier, on the other hand, will likely not operate this way. As it stands now, the Sabres have only 8 players signed beyond this season: 4 years: Vanek, Pominville, Miller 3 years: Roy, Leopold 2 years: Myers, Gaustad, Hecht This of course doesn't include Kennedy, Kaleta, and the likely Portland grads (Weber, Ennis, Gerbe). The only albatross of a contract I see in this bunch is Pominville's.

It's been a while since I looked closely at the CBA, but if a player on a "normal" contract retires then the player won't be paid his remaining salary and the team won't take a cap hit for those outstanding $'s; but the team will take a cap hit (or a cap increase in the case of a back loaded contract) for any $'s that were paid out but weren't charged to the cap. i.e., a $8MM/yr player has a cap hit of $6MM/yr for 4 years, and has 4 years remaining on the deal when he retires, then those $8MM worth of salary relief ($2MM/yr for 4 years) has to get charged back to the team. I'm pretty sure that would get charged to the team simply as the difference between what the player would have made in each of the next x years (4 in this example) minus the $6MM cap hit. So if he'd have gotten $6MM that next year and then $4MM, $4MM, and finishing w/ $2MM; the team's cap would be hit for $0, $2MM, $2MM, and $4MM in each of those remaining years. In Ilya's case; if he's bought out w/ 7 years remaining; under the current system the Devils will take a hit of $2.83, $5.58, $5.78 for the 5 remaining years, and then $0.33 the next 7 years. If he's bought out w/ 6 years remain; it'd be $5.44, $5.64 for 5 years, and then $0.19 the next 6 years. If he retires in those respective years, then it becomes $2.5, $5.25, $5.45*5, with no additional charges in years beyond the contract in a 7 lost years contract, and $5.25, $5.45*5 years in the 6 retired years buyout. The supposed contract that I based the original calcs on in my earlier post couldn't have happened because the salary between years 10 & 11 of the contract would have decreased by more than 50% of the 1st year's value. (Technically it decreased by more than 50% of the lower of the 1st 2 year's salary, which were equivalent.) The one in the link n supplied is probably correct. It is technically possible as it doesn't have any decreased greater than $3MM and no increases greater than $6MM. (So which post is the easier one to read. My money's on n's. ;) Sorry. )
Kristian Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 Why would any NHL franchise sign up to this? He's good. He's not that good. Did Mike Milbury take over as GM?
Marvelo Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 Darcy "Small Market" Regier How true. I think we just found a new nickname.
gregkash Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 the next CBA has to address this. They literally could have made it a 30 year contract, paid him league minimum for 20 of those years and ended up with a 1.5 mil cap hit. Teams found the loophole in the system, It started with DiPietro, which I still get a hardy chuckle over, and Alexi Yashin, and these teams are taking what the Islanders did and applying it to good players. I suspect in the next CBA that this issue will be addressed and revamped with all current contracts grandfathered in but new contracts counting actual money against cap. The NHL has pretty much reverted back to the rich get richer cuz they can afford to dish out 10 mil a season with a 4 mil cap hit. And say what you want about Regier but you damn well know we couldn't of made that contract work. 11.5 for ONE player who has won ONE playoff game? You guys complain about Connolly in the playoffs, he's like Gretzky compared to Kovalchuk.

In nine playoff games, he's a point a game player.

If anybody watches Sportscenter anymore, they mentioned Kovalchuk's signing and related it to the LeBron ordeal. Aside from their ordinary cracks at hockey as a whole, they also said something along the lines of "all that money for a player who's won one playoff game?"

You guys complain about Connolly in the playoffs, he's like Gretzky compared to Kovalchuk. The Islanders did not take advantage of any loopholes. Yashin was signed before the CBA. The DePietro deal was nothing more than another sign of how much of an idiot Wang is. DiPietro's contract is not loaded in any way. It pays him $4.5 million each of the 15 seasons. There is no quick escape from that contract. It was pure stupidity. The simple solution to these kind of contracts is essentially what you are suggesting. They need to block teams from loading contracts, so they need to make it so that each year of a multi-year contract pays out the same amount of money (just like that DiPietro deal does). Teams will still find ways to play games, but that would go a long way. I would also tweak the rule about how contracts signed with guys 35 or older always count against the cap. Make it so that anyone over 35 automatically counts against the cap, even if they were signed when they were 27 (coughcoughKOVALCHUKcoughcough). Eliminate the advantages of front loading contracts and eliminate the advantages of signing a guy well into his 40s knowing that he'll retire long before reaching the end of the contract. But there's always one problem with these ideas, these guys always find any loopholes that might exist. They throw away an entire season trying to put this deal together, then once they come back, they quickly try to find ways to destroy that new agreement.
