Winger58 Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Talk is that Darcy has been in contact with the Boston Bruins and is trying to arrange a trade to acquire center Marc Savard. Unfortunately for Sabres fans, Boston is attempting to trade Savard to get under the salary cap so the trade does not involve Tim Connolly who will have a $4.5 million cap hit this season. Boston is reportedly looking for a top prospect who is on an entry level contract, i.e. Kennedy, Gerbe, etc., and a high draft pick. Savard comes with a $4 million cap number and must also waive a no-trade clause. Boston has let it leak that if Savard doesn't waive the no-trade they might place him on waivers which would allow any team to claim him and bypass the clause. Savard's family lives in Peterborough, ON so Buffalo, Toronto and Montreal would have an edge in getting Savard. Regier has also been in contact with the agent for Alexander Frolov. Frolov is an unrestricted free agent with the LA Kings. The 28-year old left wing was a 2000 1st-round draft pick of the Kings. LA has not offered a contract to Frolov due to their expected signing of Ilya Kovalchuk. Rumor has it that goalie Patrick Lalime was resigned by the Sabres at the request of Ryan Miller. Miller and Lalime have become close friends and, seeing how Miller IS the team, Miller used his influence to keep his friend on the team.
FogBat Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Welcome to the board. I had to look and see how many posts you'd done on here before going postal on you. Careful what you post on here as rumor. Some of us have been here a long time and know not to take rumors seriously. We take hard facts very seriously and whenever we hear the word "rumor", we normally think of the hustler that runs hockeybuzz.com.
inkman Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 I would trade any and all prospects for savard.
VansTheMans Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 I've heard rumblings of Savard to Buffalo over the past few days. Boston is getting DESPERATE to shed salary, and Savard is the only player they're willing to part with that has trade value. I'd assume they'd want a defensive prospect in return for Savard (with the loss of Wideman), which the Sabres have PLENTY of. We've stacked up some very nice defensive prospects. If we could ship a few out, plus a pick, the Sabres would be FOOLISH not to acquire Savard. He's top line talent, and will finally provide Vanek a 1st line center to play with. A defensive prospect, Sekera and a 1st or 2nd for Savard.
will Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 you got that right, ink. starting with gerbe. the massholes would go apesh!t for him. i wouldn't cry if kennedy were included, but it'd be funny to see him end up on a team with recchi after he got flattened by him a couple of months ago in what ended up being the series turning point.
Taro T Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Well, if Savard comes to the Sabres in return for prospects / picks then you could be looking at lines such as Roy - Savard - Vanek Ennis - Connolly - Pominville Hecht - Niedermayer - Grier Kennedy - Gaustad - Kaleta with Stafford / Gerbe (more likely Stafford as Boston could be interested in Gerbe) and McCormick as the spares. I would be extremely happy with those lines. I'll believe it when I see it; but considering the cap space the Sabres have left, I do expect they have at least 1 more move prior to opening day. The 4th line isn't quite the "energy line" that you'd get with a typical 4th line, but when injuries strike Kennedy can move to the top 2 lines and Goose to the 3rd. It also gives the Sabres 8 guys that can play center.
static70 Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Savard is 33 years old. I would love him in a Sabres uniform, but, he wouldn't be centering for Vanek, more like Pommers and a LWer (Ennis would be my guess). Not to mention his injury prone career, Darcy wouldn't pick this guy up with the Connolly experience he's had. Why would Darcy trade for him if he has the possibility to be picked up on waivers is my question. As for Frolov, no dice. I do not see Regier signing Frolov as we are stacked at LW already. You have too many bodies that are LWers. I could see him with Savard on Line 2, given Savards age, probably with Pomminstein, but where does that leave Connolly, Hecht and/or Kennedy? To many questions, and the Savard and Frolov rumors came from Ecklund from what I understand. Saw it posted over on HF Boards with an Ecklund link. With that being the case I see this as a 0% chance of happening.
gregkash Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 is it really that bad to have a LW play RW? I don't think it's a crime against humanity. I will say this though. If we got both Savard AND Frolov, Id be a very happy camper. just read that this came from ecklund. if that's true. nevermind.

I hope that the noob that started this thread isn't someone whose been here before but signed up under a different name (but we may never know for sure). Or, possible a fan for another team looking to start some crap with us. I still reserve the right to "go postal" on the noob if need be.

Having "too many bodies that are LWers" does not equal "stacked at LW." The Sabres have one, Vanek, that's it. After that it's nothing but huge question marks. Adding a second LW behind Vanek can't hurt. Savard would be a nice #1 center. If the Sabres are willing to spend the money on a potential UFA with injury problems the choice has to be Gagne. Actually I don't see why the Sabres couldn't bring in both Savard and Gagne? Except for who their GM is.

Savard is 32, has a history of injury, and is making $7 million this year and is signed for 7 more years. There's a reason Boston is trying to unload him and a reason there isn't a huge trade market for him.

If we got both Savard AND Frolov, Id be a very happy camper. just read that this came from ecklund. if that's true. nevermind. For the ecklund thing, ya, i've seen it posted now on 3 different sabres forums. As for the LW to RW thing, it is if your natural position is LW. There is a greater chance that production drops from a player that switches. Look at Kennedy for example. Ruff tried and tried to force Kennedy to the center position, it not only didn't work, but when kennedy went back to LW, his production actually picked up.

At 4 million, thats a decent price for Savard, but that contract legnth may be the killer. I would still take him, as he slows up with age you can always get him to the 3rd line center position, I mean, the guy has talent.
bunomatic Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Savard is a top center we need but he's had head problems that are still quite recent and if we are going to surrender a top prospect,a number one and a player I hope to god its not on damaged goods. Boston is already ahead of the sabres in their quest for the cup and we will have to go through them.

His cap number is $4 million, his actual salary is 7 this year and 7 next year. For a team such as the Sabres operating on a budget the cap hit is less important than the actual salary. The contract is structured for a buyout in the final 2 seasons with an actual salary around 500k, which the Sabres won't do.
static70 Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Click the 'Show Salary' button. There we go, thanks. And to Lanny, agreed. Now that I can see his salary (once again, thanks DeLuca) I see what you mean about Darcy not spending like that. But I would still like him on the team, he would be a significant upgrade from what we have at center now. The only question I have is all the injuries throughout his career, would he manage to stay healthy?
chileanseabass Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Savard would be just the center that Vanek needs to feed him the puck. That would be a killer duo.

He would be the best playmaker on the team; in that case, he should be feeding the puck to the best goal scorer.
Marvelo Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 word here in Boston is that Savard is hated among his teammates, including Chara and others calling him an a-hole. He's a sneak type of player who will hit someone in the head from behind and run away. If the Sabres get him, they have lost it. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090526113110AAvqYFP

I do believe we need to make a trade to bring in a top six forward to be an impact player.

Because over these last few years I've seen no chemistry from Pommers and Roy together. I would think they would keep Vanek and Roy together, just a hunch.
Kristian Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Because over these last few years I've seen no chemistry from Pommers and Roy together. I would think they would keep Vanek and Roy together, just a hunch. Another fantastic reason to move one or both.
static70 Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Another fantastic reason to move one or both. I am of the belief that what is missing is a RW worth a dam. Vanek didn't pot 40 for 2 seasons and since D/B left he has been the assist king to Vanek. Something Connolly, when he does play with Vanek, has not achieved. I mean, you cannot get around the fact that Roy has been very good to Vanek and this past season lets hope was just an off season for their line. I for one, am praying for a RWer worth a dam. (Horton was available this off season).
