nfreeman Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=327071 Interesting. In addition to acquiring the player, this looks like a strategic move by SJ to weaken their rival.
shrader Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 Interesting. In addition to acquiring the player, this looks like a strategic move by SJ to weaken their rival. That and an attempt to take advantage of a team in a tough cap situation. If much more goes on, you'd have to think that any RFA of value from teams like Philly or Boston could be targeted.
wonderbread Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 Personally I'd like to see DR send an offer sheet to Sam Gagner.
Bullwinkle Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 I wish the Sabres had submitted that offer sheet. Any picks we give up can be reacquired by trading.
FogBat Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 Is there anyone of value we can headhunt from Edmonton on an offer sheet?
static70 Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 Is there anyone of value we can headhunt from Edmonton on an offer sheet? Sam Gagner http://oilers.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8474040
Iron Crotch Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 A guy I think is worthy of an offer sheet is Patric Hornqvist of the Predators. He scored 30 goals last year and is only 23. The Preds are cash strapped so they may not be able to match a high offer. Of course, Darcy would never give up the picks... but I can dream. ;)
FogBat Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 Sam Gagner http://oilers.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8474040 Now I see why wonderbread mentioned him. Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants against Kevin Lowe (in spite of the fact that he is now the president of hockey operations for the club instead of the GM)!
thesportsbuff Posted July 10, 2010 Report Posted July 10, 2010 Bobby Ryan, Blake Wheeler, Devin Setoguchi, ANDREW COGLIANO+++, Marc Staal... there's quite a few solid RFA's available. Bobby Ryan tops my list, but Cogliano or Setoguchi would be nice as well. And Cogliano would be a fair retaliation to Edmonton.
Two or less Posted July 10, 2010 Report Posted July 10, 2010 Bobby Ryan, Blake Wheeler, Devin Setoguchi, ANDREW COGLIANO+++, Marc Staal... there's quite a few solid RFA's available. Bobby Ryan tops my list, but Cogliano or Setoguchi would be nice as well. And Cogliano would be a fair retaliation to Edmonton. Why Cogliano? Edmonton has supposetly been trying to trade him at the deadline and had no takers. He's considered soft and is coming off a season where he scored 10 goals. He's like a Daniel Paille. If you go the offer sheet way, you gotta go in attacking hard, go for a bigger name. Not for a guy who will be sitting in the press box mid-way through the season.

Not for a guy who will be sitting in the press box mid-way through the season. Well, you're right that I'm probably a little too high on Cogliano, but he's only entering his fourth year in the league and has put up pretty good numbers for a 23 year old. 18 goals in his first two seasons, though I'll admit I didn't realize he only scored 10 last year. Still, he's young and playing with a ###### Edmonton team -- I think he could be dangerous one day. He is also listed as a center though, so it's highly unlikely Buffalo would want to go after him. That said, going after bigger names like you mentioned isn't necessarily going to get us anywhere either. Any of the type of player Buffalo needs (IE: Bobby Ryan) is more than likely going to matched, there's just no way around it. Unless we offer a ridiculous deal that we may regret later.
apuszczalowski Posted July 10, 2010 Report Posted July 10, 2010 Is there anyone of value we can headhunt from Edmonton on an offer sheet? Besides Hall and Eberle, I'd say very little As for the poaching of RFA's, this will get bigger with the Cap in coming years where teams with cap space might start poaching RFA's from teams right up to the cap. The only thing is that teams will have to give up some big picks to get the RFA's and thats usually a problem for most teams not wanting to give up that much and have to sign the RFA to a big deal
