Kassian Working His Way Back

Kassian was 19th in the OHL in playoff scoring last year, and 6 of those in front of him played more games.

I'm not saying he's a scoring machine, but I don't think his scoring #s are bad -- they seem pretty respectable.

Like it was said, that team was stacked and a lot of those points came in blow outs. Plus he was playing on the third line for his team. Imagine the guys he was up against.

I am not saying he can't turn into a good or even great pro, just saying his numbers in juniors are little to get excited about.

Actually those are pretty bad numbers at the junior level. Rob Ray was a sniper in Juniors.

I don't think there are too many here that would mind the second coming of Rob Ray with a little more offence.

Of course, but you don't spend a 1st round pick on that. But then again, where he was picked probably doesn't matter anymore. Now it's all about maxing out his potential.

Rob Ray was strictly a fourth liner though. The hope with Kassian is that he could play on the top two lines as a power forward who can punish the other team's defenders, win the battles in the corners, and get the puck to finesse players. A player like that could be extremely valuable, even if he would rarely be the one credited with the goals.

You also can't win without guys like Kassian. Right now the Sabres have zero players that other teams must hate playing against. They have some good players (Myers, Miller) but I wouldn't be worried about playing against those guys. Kassian is big, strong, aggressive, and he might snap at any moment. If I was a defenseman, I wouldn't want to go into the corner to get the puck knowing he's coming after me.

Hopefully he becomes the player who makes playing against the Buffalo Sabres a miserable experience.

per Windsor Star: charges dropped

As part of the deal, Kassian had to perform 25 hours of community service, make a $500 donation to charity and pay for the dental work of the man he punched, said his lawyer, Patrick Ducharme.

Windsor police arrested the Spitfire forward just before 2 a.m. on May 30 at The Beach Sports Bar and Grill on Ouellette Avenue. Kassian, 19, didn’t have to spend any time in jail, being released the same day on a promise to appear in court.

Ducharme said a criminal record would have had “serious” implications on Kassian’s career. He was the Buffalo Sabres’ first-round draft pick and a criminal record would have made it difficult for the LaSalle native to cross the border.

“There’s no question that the Buffalo team wanted him record-free,” said Ducharme, in a telephone interview from an out-of-town trial.

I'm not sure if he missed some games while up here, but he still leads Windsor in scoring (17 points) despite having played four less games (8 vs. 12). He also leads the OHL in points-per-game with 2.125. It will remain to be seen if he can keep up a high pace (probably not that high), but if he does, then it will suggest that the suspension (and injuries?) of last season adversely affected his seemingly increasing stats.

Yep, definetly positive to see him doing so well in juniors so far. As tough as that kid is, if he can put the puck in the net he may be the true power forward that Sabres fans have been calling for.

His number this year were awful. Like Bill mentioned, his solid numbers were last year. The thing is, those leagues are full of guys who put up numbers like that but never took it to the next level, so one season doesn't mean all that much. The suspension obviously hurt this year, but even then, the drop off is pretty sharp.

What are you talking about, have you seen his stat lines for this season so far. I know it is early but through eight games... five goals and twelve assists, more than two points a game:

I don't know how that rates overall, but seriously are you talking about last season or this. He did pretty well after he got into the playoffs and now is doing really well in junior. Maybe he needed a little growing up and I agree he is a bit of a project. But even in pre-season you saw the skill set, he just a times looked a little lost on positioning at the next level. That will come if he works at it.

OBTW he is leading the OHL in points

The post you're replying to was made in July. It's pretty unlikely shrader is prescient. :)

So, what is the "emergency situation" that the Sabres can bring him up?

Emergency conditions means that the loaning club (Sabres) due to incapacitating injury or illness would be reduced below 2 goalkeepers, 6 defenseman, and 12 forwards.

And no, 2 goalkeepers, 6 defensemen and 12 forwards sucking on the ice is not considered and 'emergency' per NHL rules.

Henry (pulling out Klinger's file): Here we go. Father dying, right?

Klinger: Yes, sir.

Henry (going through letters in Klinger's file): Father dying, last year. Mother dying, last year. Mother and father dying. Mother, father and older sister dying. Mother dying and older sister pregnant. Older sister dying and mother pregnant. Younger sister pregnant and older sister dying. Here's an oldie but a goodie: half of the family dying, other half pregnant. (puts file down) Klinger aren't you ashamed of yourself?

Klinger: Yes sir. I don't deserve to be in the Army.

Do the Sabres have to turn to Portland first?

I think you guys are dreaming. This is the only statement I agree with, he will be a PITA. But we don't need a Sean Avery...although I'm sure many of you will think so.

Wow - I never saw this comment coming from you...

Edit: Forget it, the comment was from july. My bad.
