Kennedy Placed on Waivers (old Arbitration thread)

Cause the kid put his heart and soul into the Sabres, not just to earn a big paycheck. also he came in to sign the contract, signed, then got told his not welcome. Massive burn for a kid. Bad way of doing business.

I don't know, I think 99% of players his age put their "heart and soul" into their respective NHL club. It's not like he's done anything different than many players his age. The kid is an average third liner with some upside. Everyone on here is talking like Kennedy was the next Tyler Myers. Is it just because he's from Buffalo that has everyone in love with him? He's too small to be a shut down checker and not gifted enough to be a top 6 scorer.

1 o'clock press conference

I will be super disappointed if this doesn't mean we've made a deal for someone. A press conference to announce the release of a third line grinder would be hugely disappointing

What questions would u ask? Seriously. I think some r so dumbfounded that all they'll say is "um, Darce, what's up?" and all he'll say is "We didn't have the room at that price".

I can think of a LOT of questions (assuming the $ isn't used for another player):

1. So, Marcy, this move clearly means that you do not feel Tim Kennedy is worth that amount of money. We can only assume then that you DO feel that Tim Connolly and Drew Stafford are worth the money, since they remain members of the Sabres. Is this true, Marcy?

2. You appear to be violating your own Cheapskate Policy with this move, Marcy. The Sabres clearly have not spent much money in bringing players to the team as free agents and have long believed in "building from within" no matter how painful in the short-term. Yet here we have a player that is home-grown, relatively low cost, played fairly well last year and is only 24... yet you waived him. Why violate your policy now?

3. Tim Kennedy is liked by the fans and was, arguably, one of the better Sabres on the ice in the Playoffs, as the majority of the team lay down like dogs against the Bruins. How can you justify this move in light of these facts, Marcy?

4. Marcy, do you believe that negative PR is better than no PR at all? It sure seems that way, based on this move.

Should I continue?...

I hope you're right, but I'd be prepared to be disappointed. The Morrison signing in tandem with the Kennedy move probably explains the press conference.

it is killing the team right now in the PR department. the decision to wait 24 hours before the oracle at delphi speaks and enlightens us as to the wisdom of the mighty oz has only compounded the problem. no big surprise, i guess, since, in terms of PR fiascoes, this is the same group of ad wizards who brought us the reebok slug when they had a classic-logo-layup there for the taking.

They are waiting for the 24 hour waiver period to expire. Not sure why, maybe they aren't allowed to comment until then. The NHL is weird like that.

He has played one year in the league and has 10 goals. But his agent submits arbitration at 1.6M (the highest total he could have been awarded that the sabres would have to accept). They tried to bend the Sabres over the table, got greedy and now he's waived. And I'd bet DR warned them it would happen if they were awarded $1M+ in arbitration. He should have signed a 2-year deal at $800K. Just b/c he is a local kid doesn't mean he should be exonerated.

$1 mil is still cheap for Kennedy -- it's not like we need the money elsewhere. Big deal.

Anyone know a place to listen to the presser online?

Not positive but I'd be shocked if www.wgr550.com wasn't carrying it live.

www.wgr550.com should have it

Usually Sabres.com carries press conferences. WGR550 may tune in live (they're actually on national programming at 1), which would mean you can listen to their live broadcast. However, I'd say Sabres.com is the best bet. If they are consistent, it won't start until at least 1:15.

real-time news feed from google indicates no action yet -- unofficial leafs news feed stating that the team will not put in a claim (some had thought they would because burke likes kennedy).

Yeah, that goon Jim Rome is on from 12-3 so I somewhat doubt WGR carries it.

I hate Jim Rome, someone should really pour some gasoline on him and let the term "Jim Rome is Burning" take on a literal meaning

So 29 other GM's agree with Darcy's assessment of Kennedy's value?

From close to a new contract to waivers. That's what happened to Tim Kennedy in the span of a few days. A league source tells WGR the Sabres and Kennedy were "extremely close" to a deal that would have avoided last week's arbitration hearing completely. A deal wasn't consummated, the hearing was held, and according to our source the Sabres made it known that an award the team deemed not the proper value for that player, could lead to Kennedy being placed on waivers. We are told Kennedy was well aware of that risk going into the arbitration process.

The Sabres were very confident with their position heading into the hearing and were expecting the award to be a lot less than the 1 million dollars that was given to the South Buffalo native. Even with the advance notice from the club, Kennedy was apparently taken by surprise because he was told about being placed on waivers on Monday just moments after he signed the contract. As far as the difference between the Sabres last contract offer and the actual 1 million dollar salary that was awarded, we are told it is a lot less than the buyout amount which is just over 333 thousand dollars.

Bingo, the 1.6 mill is definitely what pissed them off

Now this I can't believe is true. that would be stupid for the agent to do for a few reasons. One, they could walk away. Two, they'd never get it. Three, they'd piss of OSP and get waived.

What is this nonsense about calling Kennedy a "smallish forward"?

If I recall correctly, he was THE ONLY Sabre to play a consistent feisty, physical game throughout the season. The kid got his nose dirty, went into the corners, paid the price in front of the net. He did EVERYTHING to prove his worth to this organization.

You simply CANNOT DEFEND this action by the Sabres. There's no sensible way.

The Sabres wanted to sign him at 700K. He was awarded 300K more. That's worth dumping him? Really? 300K? The price they're going to have to fork over to buy him out?

No.

Now the Sabres blew 300K. For that price, they could have had a promising young forward, or have nothing.

They choose the freaking latter.

This is the only bargaining chip he had.. and he used it.

Sure the kid is from Buffalo and I feel sorry for him, but this is business. His agent wanted to play hard ball and Tim came out the loser. Would anyone care if this was Gerbe? I swear more people are upset because he's from Buffalo and aren't thinking about the on-ice product.
