Chara, Thornton and Semin lead the class of 2011 UFA's. Any thoughts on the Sabres doing what many NBA teams are doing and open as much cap space as possible for some really good top end talent available next summer? Connolly and Rivet are off the books next year and that is $8 mill right there. As much as I am a win now guy i can't deny that the prospect of making it through this year and loading up next off season is a interesting one.

Absolutely not. I love the city of Buffalo, I really do, but Buffalo is NOT the kind of franchise where stars will flock to. There is no history to suggest this scenario for Buffalo.

They did for the Bills in the 90's.

Which is to say, good players flock to teams that win and have committed ownership. I don't believe Pittsburgh has better fans or is a huge upgrade in terms of quality of living...but the impact of Mario and a clear commitment to winning (not to mention getting Crosby and Malkin in the draft) has been significant. Buffalo never seems to get things to fall into place...and when we do...it falls apart either through our own fumbled negotiations (Drury/Briere) or bad luck.

I truly believe we have a limited window of time with Miller coming into his peak. He's the kind of guy that can recruit others IF he believes in what Lindy, Darcy, Quinn and Tom G are doing. All signs seem to indicate that he does.

Bottom line -- they can't keep spending $4 million on players like TC...but they can't panic either. They aren't as far off as people think...but they're also not as close as we hoped (proven against Boston). They need to get bigger and a little better in the leadership area.

What are the chance any of these 3 re-sign before next year? I think Chara and Semin stay. Thornton may move on.

If the Devils can somehow sign Kovalchuk. I WANT ZACH PARISE!!!!!

And I want Patrick Kane...they both have the same chance of coming here.

Very possible.

If Darcy's fired by then.

Who?

Bryce Paup and Ted Wahington come immediately to mind but there were others. I do agree with the point that players will come if they believe in the organization. No matter what you believe on how things went down, Buffalo is battling a negative perception right now and hopefully Miller, Grier and Rivet can help change that perception.

Buffalo is obviously paying the money and several ex-players love to come back to live here so there is no reason they shouldn't be able to compete for free agents if they want to.

How is it obvious that they're paying the money?

They have been within a couple million of the cap every year but one since the lockout and within $1 million two years. Their problem isn't that they don't pay. Its that they tend to pay the wrong players.

Would you be in favor of the initial topic of the thread? The idea that the Sabres could go into a off-season with $18-$20 million to play with is a interesting one. A piece goes to Myers and the rest can really load a team up for a run. Especially if you can find a home for Pominville.

No because like every other sport, Hockey is figuring out that its better to keep your own when you have them so more and more players are staying put and the crop of free agents gets weaker by the year.

What is happening in the NBA is a function of their rookie pay scale and a phenomenal draft class a few years back. If you could guarantee Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin and Doughty would all be available, I might give it a second thought.

Finally on Pominville, while I wish he was making closer to $4 million, I'm not sure you could have a better 2nd right winger. He's a responsible as they come and has been pretty productive and even clutch until this playoff year.

I took a look at potential free agents for next season. Even if 30-40% re-sign it looks to be stronger than this season.

That piece for Myers (and to a lesser extent, Ennis) doesn't go into effect until the following season though, so in the short term (one year), they wouldn't have to deal with that.
