This is good news for Philly and Chicago, not great news. They will still have a very hard time keeping what they have. Which by the way, is a major obstacle for the Bruins in getting Kaberle.

I still say they will have to dump salary.

It was never about whether or not they'd survive. We all knew they'd still be a very strong team, but they are not as good anymore as they were this year. They're not done yet either. 3 NHL defensemen and 8 forwards signed. There's still more than enough work left to do there.

I know survive was an exageration. They will stil have to make moves but if this allows them to at least say they will just send Huet to the minors to create more leverage.

I'll still take their top 8 as my starting point and I wouldn't bet against them still being best in the leasgue.

Byfuglien, Sopel, Eager to Atlanta. BTW any trade involving Byfuglien had to include Sopel because the Hawks wanted to dump his salary in the worst way.

Did I not say "Trust me?"

Philly will be next.

Oh yeah, they're deep, but they just had to drop a guy who was one of their most valuable guys during their cup run. That's pretty significant. As for them being among the best, I completely expect that, but then again, I want to wait and see what happens with all 30 teams before I start making that judgment. The other thing I can't get out of my mind is that they might not want to bite that bullet and send Huet down. But if they do, what happens if Niemi or Crawford get hurt and they need to bring up a goalie? Ideally they're going to permanently move either him or some of the other excessive money and they will still try to do exactly that.

Hope you didn't strain your elbow patting yourself on the back. Chicago traded a third line winger, a 4th or 5th defenseman and a goon for high draft picks, cap room and bodies to fill out their roster. Sounds like a win for them.

One body to fill their roster. Morin's just a prospect at this point and should be back in juniors again this year. Your point still stand though. They did quite well on this deal.

This trade was purely about salary. It didn't hurt that Chicago also made out fairly well in the trade, but a trade had to me made for cap reasons alone.

Byfuglien 3 mil

Sopel 3.5 mil

Eager <1 mil

Aliu - in minors

Reasoner 1.5 mil

Morin - in minors

So basically the Hawks gained 6+ mil which they sorely need if they want to keep Sharp and Versteeg.

Plus as I said, they did very well. Aliu has struggled as a pro, while Morin shows a lot of promise.

Can Atlanta get Byfuglien to be the monster he was in the playoffs? Probably not. He's never totaled more than 36 points. Eager will supply needed agressiveness. Meanwhile Reasoner will be a solid 4th line center for the Hawks PLUS they get two picks.

I generally agree with this post, and 100% agree that this trade was about Chicago getting cap relief, but with a slight correction: Sopel's cap # is $2.33MM.

BTW, capgeek.com is a good source for team salary & cap info.

And two other quick notes, Morin's still in juniors and Eager doesn't actually have a contract yet, so technically they save no cap space by moving him.

Or they will send him to the minors if they need the cap space.
