Another GREAT sports role model

The kid, and the rest of his teammates, have worked their ###### off since September - if this is the way he chooses to celebrate, so be it. He might look back in a few years and wonder why he was such an ######, but who is anyone to question it unless you've gone on the same ride.

Secondly, this is the same guy that Bob DeCesare of the BN points out was looking to make eye contact with his family immediately after the win and also gave 'shout-outs' to his hometown in several post-game interview, so it can't be all evil living under that Blackhawk jersey.

From DeCesare: :For me, the image that will stick from Patrick Kane's Stanley Cup-winning goal will be of him scouring the upper reaches of the arena trying to make long-distance eye contact with his parents and sisters. It reminded me of U.S. goaltender Jim Craig searching the stands for his father after the Miracle on Ice. Kane's been through a lot in his young career, not all of it good. But that gesture, that desire to share the moment with his family, says a lot."

The Buffalo writers keep pushing that last line in your post about how he's been through a lot in his career. Now I'm not trying to shoot down Kane when I say this, but that is complete BS. He hasn't gone through anything more than any other NHL player has. Whether it's a young canadian moving halfway across the country to play in the OHL, or the American kid who moves to Ann Arbor to join the US developmental program, or the young european who comes to North America to play junior hockey, they all take that giant leap into uncertain waters at some point. Kane isn't any more special than anyone else because of the path he took.

The problem is that people should'nt be using these guys as role models for their kids. These guys are just as likely to crush a kids dream of what an upstanding guy is as their own father. they're just athletes and if they were'nt talented athletes they would be no different than you or me. WE're all capable of screwing up and so are they so why do you hold them up as role models. A professional athlete is the last person I'd ever hold up as a role model for my child. We've all witnessed the incredibly stupid things these 'role models' have done over the years. Don't want my kid to aspire to that. I'll be the role model for him just as my father was for me.

How many people pick role models for their kids? Kids pretty much pick them on their own. You can try to guide them away from bad influences, but if a kid idolizes an athlete (or a rocker or a Supreme Court justice), it won't be easy. Sooner or later something happens that will make the kid realize how bad (or good ) his idol really is.

All part of growing up....

You could always try to instill a sense in kids that they shouldn't really idolize people, or at least not emulate them. I didn't and I turned out OK. :)
