  1. 1. How I feel about this player:

    • 5: Must keep under any circumstances.
      1
    • 4: Would like to keep; would trade only for a great return (if under contract) or would pay a premium to re-sign (if FA).
      13
    • 3: Don't care if he stays or goes; would make a fair trade (if under contract) or pay somewhat above current salary to re-sign (if FA).
      19
    • 2: Don't want him on the team, really; would trade for a somewhat lesser return (if under contract) or sign at current or lower salary (if FA).
      2
    • 1: Get this guy off of the team, no matter what it takes.

People are always attempting to put Gerbe in a package trade.

My thoughts are you keep him. He looks to be a younger, albeit a little shorter, Danny Briere.

I won't go so far as to say he is 1st liner, but 3rd line winger? Ya, I can see Gerbe being worth keeping, if and only if, he has a supporting Center that is strong, fast and has a nose for some decent passing. Matt Cullen as the older version comes to mind, Lombardi as a younger version.

I don't see Gerbe reaching his full potential as an NHL player without a solid Center.

I dont think Gerbe has more potential than Ennis to become next DB. But he is solid. I like his game, he has some edge. Nice wrister, and hes pretty fast. However he is the first prospect i'd send in a package. Just because we have more than enough small forwards. I'd like to subtract from that rather than incessantly building around it.

And a growth spurt. He's just too small and his talent doesn't compensate enough for it. He seems to have the heart and want to. So does Adam Mair. Sometimes physical limitations just win out. If you could take his brain and heart and transplant into Stafford you just might have something there.

The thing that I like the most about Gerbe, is he has shown that he will do whatever he can to help the team. He made countless plays this year laying out to block shots in the defensive zone.

However, I do agree that his size limits him, and up to this point, I don't think he has shown the scoring touch. I think that will come with time though. Solid 4.

He's 22. The guy has been one of the best players at every level he's played at. He's got, speed, skill and jam - all things this team needs more of. There are plenty of small players who play at a high level (Kane, Cammalleri, Briere, etc.). Ryan Miller was horse---t at 22. He deserves a chance to develop.

i voted "2", but he is probably more like a 2.5.

IMO, size won't be gerbe's downfall - his durability (or lack thereof) will be. some may say that any lack of durability is a function of the fact that he is 4'8" and plays with an edge in the NHL. maybe so. my point is: if he could stay healthy playing the way he can (and needs) to play, he'd be a serviceable forward. i don't think that he can do it.

There's one problem. All those small guys you listed? They tower over Gerbe.

I voted a three, I think Ennis has more skill and just as much moxie. Gerbe is more of a brick, but Ennis can get there. I agree Gerbe needs a fast skating center to help him, just not sure he fits in with all the other Sabres mighty mites. If the Sabres can get a center with value as part of a package deal that includes Gerbe then I say go for it. But I would not just give him away. He does have attitude. Put him on a line with Kaleta and Enis and see what happens.

But as Lindy said, once you get under 5'8" what's the difference? They all can sneak into pay toilets.

Granted, you can't trust the listed heights, but none of the guys you listed are below 5'8. People can list off as many short players as they want, but the simple fact is that there is no one in today's game that is an adequate comparison to Gerbe.

there are differences, and they matter. but i don't think the differences are a pure function of one guy having 2 inches on the other guy. what i have in mind here is this: what ennis showed in 2010, and what i think gerbe lacks in sufficient measure, is what lindy described as an instinctive "greasiness." ennis is a mite, but he just seems to find his way through traffic, with speed, and into critical parts of the ice, in a way that gerbe does not.

true, true.

i don't necessarily mean to conclude that there's not room for both ennis and gerbe on the team's 2010-2011 roster ... but, in fact, i think i am concluding that.

ink pointed it out a while back: if both of those guys start the year with the sabres, then we're looking at a top-6 that includes 3 guys who are listed at (that's listed at) 5'9" or shorter.

and to be clear: i am not interested in the talk about how gerbe would look good skating on a third line. (and i see no real debate on whether ennis should be in the top-6.)

I want to see Gerbe get a shot next year, but a 5?

Well, yeah, because in MY universe, they need people to fill in for Derek Roy, Tim Connolly, and Drew Stafford this coming season. ;)
