Kristian Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 A big wall size poster of all the UFA's they throw darts at? But the darts have no tips and none of them stick? That would require Darcy to actually know who's a UFA and who isn't, and to be honest I'm pretty sure he believes UFA's can only be subtracted from a team, not added to it.
Billfold100 Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 And if this postseason has taught us anything, it's that the regular season means absolutely nothing. +1
LabattBlue Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 I, for one, am happy that they re-signed him. I think he's got enough gas left in him. He's producing at the same average pace he has over his career. He was the only skater to really show up in the playoffs. I would have liked to see a couple of years which I think he's got left in the tank. I also think he would be able to find a place on another team if he wanted so I don't think it's a paycheck thing. I think he likes it here and, wishing on a star, will makes some changes in the off-season to push us forward. "If wishes were fishes, beggars would fly." There is no reason for a 2 year deal from the Sabres perspective. One year at a time at this point in his career is the way to go.
Stoner Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 He bugged the war room. "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room." And, yeah, LB, it's a good thing I googled it.
shrader Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 There is no reason for a 2 year deal from the Sabres perspective. One year at a time at this point in his career is the way to go. He's our new James Patrick or Teppo Numminen. He'll keep signing one year deals with us until he's ready to hang up the skates.
SabresIndy Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 How can this signing be anything but a positive sign? Grier was (sadly) one of our best forwards and leaders in the playoffs and does the little things to get wins, both in the regular season and post-season. I would assume his signing is partly convenience, but he's not the kind of guy that wants to play someplace that doesn't have a decent shot at winning and making a run. We'll see, of course...but it certainly doesn't hurt to have a guy like him back and he must at least have some confidence they have a chance next year.
Mbossy Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 And the final price is...... $1.4 million, $200k raise. 14% raise; about as much as my season tix will go up this year. :death:

Isn't he the same guy that no one was after last summer?
SHAAAUGHT!!! Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Why would they have to give a 200k raise to a guy who is on the downside of his career? Isn't he the same guy that no one was after last summer? $200K, 17% raise is money well spent. It's about managing expectations. No one expects Grier to score 20 in the regular season. He is expected to provide a leadership role, mentor the younger guys, and perform well in the playoffs where the intagibles make and break games. The Sabres need leadership, they have at least 3 young players the team is going to rely heavily on next year(Ennis, Meyers, Kennedy, and maybe Gerbe/Butler) and its nice to know there is someone there that is effective with younger players. And the Sabres expect to be in the playoffs again next year. This appears to be a good, strategic, signing.
That Aud Smell Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 And if this postseason has taught us anything, it's that the regular season means absolutely nothing. the rangers, thrashers, hurricanes, lightning, islanders, panthers, leafs, blues, flames, ducks, stars, wild, blue jackets, and oilers would beg to differ. :nana:

Is it so bad to reward a guy for a job well done? the $200K isn't an amount that is going to make or break the team at any point. Also, giving a guy a little raise can send a positive message to other guys on the team and in the league.
biodork Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 He's our new James Patrick or Teppo Numminen. He'll keep signing one year deals with us until he's ready to hang up the skates. I'm cool with that - maybe he'll be our Mark Recchi.

SDS Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 New article by Bill on Grier: Grier Re-Ups With Sabres
nfreeman Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 New article by Bill on Grier: Grier Re-Ups With Sabres Here's an interesting nugget from that piece: With his contract done, Grier has no problem turning into a recruiter for the Sabres. “I already kind of spoke (to) one of the few guys who are up, who have thoughts or questions about coming here,” he said. Might he have spoken with someone from SJ, where he spent the last 3 years? Here's a list of their notable FAs: F Patrick Marleau »UFA (6.3) G Evgeni Nabokov »UFA (5.4) D Rob Blake »UFA (4.0) D Niclas Wallin »UFA (1.7) F Scott Nichol »UFA (0.8) F Manny Malhotra »UFA (0.7) F Joe Pavelski »RFA (1.6) G Henrik Karlsson »RFA (1.3) F Devin Setoguchi »RFA (1.2) F Cameron MacIntyre »RFA (0.9) F Matthew Jones »RFA (0.9) F Steven Zalewski »RFA (0.7)

darksabre Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Wow there are a lot of cheap contracts on that team. I'd throw an offer sheet at Pavelski sooo hard. Could you imagine getting Marleau as a Free Agent? Yeesh. I hope we can get something done on that front.
carpandean Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Keep in mind that some of these guys joined San Jose AFTER he was already gone. And it is unlikely that he would talk to RFAs about coming here (offer sheets are still too uncommon a practice), which pretty much narrows it down to Blake or Marleau (assuming Nabby isn't going anywhere or, at least, not to backup anyone.) Blake is 40, but still averaged over 20 minutes per game. However, Marleau is the one that really seems to make sense. If they can unload Connolly, then he'd definitely be a target of interest (to me, to many fans, but who knows if he is to Darcy.)

carpandean Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 Or anyone else he's played with over the years at any level or any other friends he has made over time. True, true. It would be interesting to see who, if anyone, from Washington or Edmonton that he played with will be a free agent.

carpandean Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 I say or hope for Marleau. He'd at least be another guy that everyone could always spell his name wrong. I always get Moreau and Marleau and mixed up when I'm typing. Usually end up calling "Ethen Mareau". Fortunately, I usually spot the mistake before hitting the "post" button. Of course, then there's J.P. Lamoureux.
shrader Posted May 20, 2010 Report Posted May 20, 2010 True, true. It would be interesting to see who, if anyone, from Washington or Edmonton that he played with will be a free agent. Or players from his college days. There's an endless list of guys he may have been friends with over the years. Reading too much into his recruitment comment is a risky move.
