I've never watched the draft before, but I am in LA. Anybody been to one? Should I don the classic jersey and head to Staples in June?

I remember when the start of free agency actually meant something to Sabre fans.
shrader Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 I've never watched the draft before, but I am in LA. Anybody been to one? Should I don the classic jersey and head to Staples in June? The draft itself is a bit slow in person. They usually put together some sort of fan fest to go along with it though. In LA, I'd imagine that they could put something decent together for that.

You put your foot in the crease, and shake the Cup about.
will Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 i went to the one in boston what seems like eons ago (1999) and watched the sedins get picked #'s 2 and 3, followed by the rangers wheeling and dealing to get...wait for it...pavel brendl at #4. this was also the "wasted draft" for the sabres, picking heisten, bartovic, janik, zigomanis, tim preston, and unmentionables after that. could have snagged havlat, tanabe, commodore...but who knew what they would do, really. oh yeah, it was pretty boring. good think the tickets are free.
Sabre Dance Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 I went to the (only) draft held in Buffalo...it was the one where Lindros was picked by the Nordiques and got booed for not donning the sweater. Seeing all of the NHL trophies that were on display in the lobby of the Aud was pretty cool. Aside from these, it was pretty slow. Watching on TV is better as they fill you in on who's who. But, it is free and you do get to cheer/boo a team and it's choices....

And then you look at the guys who came out in the first round that year: Niedermayer, Forsberg, Matvichuk, LaPointe, Ward, Naslund, Murray, Kovalev, and even Boucher. Wish I had known then. (I'll bet San Jose and Quebec wish they had known then, too.)
VanBoxmeer Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 I must be old. I remember when the start of free agency actually meant something to Sabre fans. Maybe they can pick up another play like Raffi Torres he panned out well.

Eleven Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 I'd say Quebec was pretty happy with their results. I'd say Colorado was pretty happy with Quebec's results. But yeah, same thing.

It was the Vinny Lecavailer and Brian Ginota draft. Sabres picked Dimitri Kalinin that year.

Two or less Posted June 4, 2010 Report Posted June 4, 2010 I never thought I'd hear something referred to as the "Brian Gionta draft". Lol well the reason I said that was because he was all over the news here in Rochester and had a huge fan group in Buffalo, that's why that memory is stuck in my head.
