Blazedal Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 To all people who pretend they know hockey: quit hating on Derek Roy. The guy has lead the team in points for years now...and most seasons hes a point per game player. That is not a "3rd line center". In fact, goals wise, we were #10 in the league. And he lead the team in points. He's lazy, and makes poor decisions; but that doesn't mean he doesn't produce. And that also doesn't mean he's a 3rd line center. He is an underachieving top-line center.

In fact, while I'm at it, I'll stop hating Connolly too as he's an underachieving superstar, and Stafford as he's an underachieving power forward.
pat989 Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 You bored tonight Derek? He was drunk posting again... how's Chippewa these days D-Rock? You spent a ton of time down there during the season so I can't imagine how much you're spending down there now.

Pretty sure Vanek was a p.o.s. before he went on a tear at the end of the season...now he's a gamer that is captain material??? Once we get rid of these bums and go down to the store where they sell #1 centers, power forwards, and power play quarterbacks, the cup will be ours!

Keep going, I'll let you know when you're done. *edit I actually like TG as an owner. Lord knows he's not being tight on the cash going into the roster. Just too bad Darcy decided to blow it all on the wrong players.
Blazedal Posted May 7, 2010 Author Report Posted May 7, 2010 I never said Derek Roy was great, by any means. But we have much bigger problems then him. And calling a point per game player a "3rd line center" just makes our fans look...stupid.

And calling a point per game player a "3rd line center" just makes our fans look...stupid. Maybe, but calling him a top-line center is equally stupid. I can name perhaps 5 teams in the league on which he'd be a top-line center. Unfortunately Buffalo is one of them. Also, I think you can easily find another 5 teams on which he's a 3rd line center. Agree on the bigger problems - They're called Quinn, Regier and Ruff.

He actually did it once and that was only after going on a late season tear.

Also, I think you can easily find another 5 teams on which he's a 3rd line center. I'd say that if Derek Roy is your 3rd line center, you are stacked at center (it's like Pittsburgh having Staal as their third-line center.) Likewise, if he is your first-line center, you are thin at center. He is a fine second-line center, but he's always been asked to be more here. Sometimes, he steps up to that challenge (the second half of 2007-08, for example, when he was the third-highest scoring forward in the league behind Malkin and Ovechkin), but he can't do it full time.

henysgol Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 Roy, Connolly, Stafford...Underachievers all the way. We really needed them to shine in these playoffs and they did not. If they turn out to be dead weight again next season, it's going to made my head hurt! I'm not against trading any of the three. Trade them all for Iginla!
inkman Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 I don't hate him, just don't want him as a leader.
SabresIndy Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 I'll say this about Roy -- he at least seemed like he was trying to figure out what his issues were and gave an honest effort and as someone else said, led the team in points. Bottom line -- Drury/Briere made Roy and Vanek better. Playing against the second or third line every night makes a difference. Connolly is a different story -- Darcy needs to look in the mirror, realize what he was seeing in flashes with him was 10 percent of his game, not the 75 percent he dreamed of. Get him out for whatever you can get back and be done with it. Roy, at least, can be salvaged and has performed -- maybe not like we'd all like him to, but he has put points on the board and is responsible defensively. All of that said, Roy disappeared against Boston and backed down from the type of game he needed to play. Being small isn't an excuse either.

Although he didn't have too good of a series vs Boston Sabres have much bigger issues and it is in they way the play. The forwards play d too low in their own zone which leaves points exposed, no outlets, no rushes etc etc etc. Is this a flaw of the players or the coaches. I say coaching.
deluca67 Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 I never said Derek Roy was great, by any means. But we have much bigger problems then him. And calling a point per game player a "3rd line center" just makes our fans look...stupid. The only thing that makes Sabre fans "look stupid" is the never ending need for some to elevate players beyond their status. For example Briere and Connolly. The top two center positions should belong to game changers and difference makers. Roy is neither. He has the potential to be both. It has just not been realized yet, if it ever will. Teams do not go into games worrying about Roy. Roy at this point in his career is a compliment player not a go to guy. In this case the Sausage is a side dish. The Sabres need to acquire some entrees.
DR HOLLIDAY Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 I think Roy is a quality second line player. Lets face it as a 1st line player he is not a game changer on most nights and we need a true number one centre to give Vanek a chance to be all that he can be...............Will we ever be able to do this, probably not, finding a guy like that is pretty rare and trading for him costs a pretty penny.
BuffalOhio Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 I want Mark Recchi on this team, dammit. Dude knows how to win and play PLAYOFF hockey.
