deluca67 Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 I was wondering what happened to Nick Mendola so I did a quick google search. Apparently there is another sports radio station in Buffalo that now employees Nick Mendola, WECK1230. Who knew? Apparently they even employee Brad Riter and play Yankee broadcasts. I hope they have a morning sports talk program because I am really tired of listening to the Howard Simon sidekicks shout down the guests.

Brad has had a good thing going at WECK for about two years with another former WGR guy Scott Wilson. The whole station is a Pro-Buffalo grassroots type thing in the afternoons with UB broadcasts which I'm totally cool with. I even like Fox Sports Radio on the weekends much more than ESPN radio...
Eleven Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 Like JimiV stated, 1230 switched formats a while ago. About after a year after Riter was fired from GR for sleeping through his pre-shift duties, he joined 1230, and he has gathered an audience. His show is not limited to sports. Mendola always wanted to be in front of the mic, and not a producer (and who could blame him); when he was offered the position at 1230, he gave two weeks' notice to GR and was informed that the two weeks were not necessary (this is not abnormal at all--companies routinely do this when trade secrets, such as how a show is produced or what advertisers spend how much, are at stake). I haven't yet given Mendola a shot; I will. I have listened to Riter. He's ok. I don't think that Simon's group shuts down callers, though, DeLuca. I think Schopp does, but not Simon.

They need to get a morning show. I am glad there is a alternative. I like to listen to Jerry Sullivan, Schoop and the Bulldog and I really like Freddie Coleman on ESPN radio. Because of the direction the Howard Simon has taken and my dislike of the guy on from 10-12 I need something else to listen to. This City desperately needs a alternative for sports in the morning afternoon.

I agree on Schoop, he and Chris Parker are a nice balance though. I like Mendola as a host. He's is a bit on the nicer side. But it comes across as sincere and just who he is. I liked him on the 10-12 slot and I liked when he did weekends.

Oh, they (especially Schopp) can be complete jerks with callers, but they (especially Parker) make me laugh on the way home. Mendola is a decent guy; I've met him a couple of times. Can be a bit arrogant, but nothing approaching Schopp. He definitely comes across as just who he is. The guy you can't stand on GR between 10 and 12, by the way, is Colin Cowherd. No surprise there. He hates hockey and openly refuses to talk about it (except to repeat over and over how much he hates it); he makes outlandish (but sometimes justifiable) points and defends those points by repeating them and/or by using inapposite examples rather than using logic; and loves to just bash anything he can. Loves sports scandal; he's like the TMZ of sports radio Very seldom does he have anything positive to say, on any topic. I can't listen to him. If I'm in my car during those hours, the iPod is on. I kind of feel bad for the guy. He's like a Sherwood Anderson grotesque, and his gig is hatred.
billsrcursed Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 Nick actually started a thread over at TSW asking for advice/input into his show. Cool move on his part, kind of hope he sticks around on the boards...
Buffalo Wings Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 Nick actually started a thread over at TSW asking for advice/input into his show. Cool move on his part, kind of hope he sticks around on the boards... Did someone (Scott???) direct him here, too? Wouldn't be a bad idea, since I don't frequent TSW too much in the offseason or here during the summer.
