  1. 1. How I feel about this player:

    • 5: Must keep under any circumstances.
      2
    • 4: Would like to keep; would trade only for a great return (if under contract) or would pay a premium to re-sign (if FA).
      24
    • 3: Don't care if he stays or goes; would make a fair trade (if under contract) or pay somewhat above current salary to re-sign (if FA).
      31
    • 2: Don't want him on the team, really; would trade for a somewhat lesser return (if under contract) or sign at current or lower salary (if FA).
      17
    • 1: Get this guy off of the team, no matter what it takes.

If a player with the right attitude can be brought in for Roy, I'm willing to take 20 pts dropoff in scoring. If he can also win draws, make that 30 pts.

I'd buy into this!

Roy was a plus 2 in the playoffs while going against their top line. He may not have scored all that much but neither did the other team while he was on the ice. He didn't disappear or suck. He is a 1st or 2nd line center.

Was he on the ice for any of the 6 powerplay goals?

The only way Roy is a top six forward is by using the same standards of mediocrity used by the front office and many of the fans.

is that really the only way? because i tend to think that posting ~70 points and a + rating will also put you in the top-6 of just about every team in the league.

I am trying to fit players in where they belong and not simply slot a player into the top six because of contract or potential.

again - talking about ~70 points and defensive competence, not his contract or potential.

I am not winning a Cup with Roy as a top six forward.

take a close look at the cup's rings from the last 15 years -- they're marked not just by heroes and demi-gods, they're also pocked with the names of whiny euro blitches.

He is simply not the difference maker I am looking for in a top six forward. He has a lot of growing up to do as a player before he ever would be.

here's where i get my take on your take. by any quantifiable metric, the sausage is a top-6 forward. the basis of your antipathy (and you're not alone) is rooted in things that cannot be quantified. and that's fine. i'd like him gone as well. (course, i'd like to see The Skill be shipped first.) my last point being, if the guy is here, he's playing among the top 6; it's silly to say it should be otherwise.

I voted 3, but in reality he's a 2.5 for me - his point production (except for the playoffs) is fine, but it's his attitude and the way he works with Lindy's system that I don't care for. The '2' is more accurate for the fact that I don't want him around anymore, but the '3' vote is more accurate because I'd rather hang onto him than trade him for a lesser player. Getting rid of him would be a waste of an asset if it doesn't bring in an equal return.

I know it's a bit of a tangent, but I was thinking Roy was even a pretty good winger in 05-06, when he played next to Drury. I couldn't remember the other winger, so I went back to the game reports... It was Grier, but good Lord, that team was stacked!

Brierre - Dumont - Afinogenov

Drury - Grier - Roy

Connolly - Pominville - Kotalik

Gaustad - Pyatt - Vanek

With Hecht and Mair upstairs...

I still think we should have kept Dumont and let Brierre walk after that season.

We should of kept Dumont over Kotalik. Dumont would still be playing in the top six here, and would give us some size up there.

Dumont-Connolly-Pommer.

He posted 45 points this year, and over 70 during 07/08. Kotalik hasn't gotten beyond 30 in how long, 3 seasons?

Another great decision by Darcy. But wait, it didn't involve prospects so i didnt expect a logical decision.

My vote is public. Keep at all Costs.

Its simple, Roy is better than Connolly, younger than Connolly, works better with Vanek than Connolly.

In short, Derek Roy is better than Tim Connolly.

If you want to build a team based solely on stat lines go ahead. He scored 70 points and I couldn't care less. He is not a big time player or difference maker. Again, you are using the standard of mediocrity.

Euro blitches? means nothing to the conversation.

On the Sabres Derrick Roy is a top six forward. The Sabres are nowhere near being a serious contender for the Cup and Roy's elevated status is part of the reason why. I want difference makers in my top six. I want talented players who other teams need to game plan against. I want size that will keep players on others teams heads up and on a swivel. Derrick Roy is not that type of player.

Would you take him as a #2 center if they brought in a good #1 option?

From what I saw of Ennis at the end of the season. Roy may be the third best center on the team right now. Even if they dump Connolly and bring in a real #1 option Roy still may be the third best center on the roster.

Can we raise the standards for players a little higher please?

Not that we've ever actually seen Ennis play center yet.

Nothing short of Crosby, Malkin, and Staal down the middle will be good enough for me!

OK, mildly tongue-in-cheek. I'm sure that everyone would love to have two scoring lines that are good enough to make Derek Roy a third-line center. There aren't many (any?) teams that have a good enough second line to make that happen. The real problem is that most of the good teams have one top line that is enough better than ours that you notice our second line more. Roy is top-six caliber, but we need some more top-three caliber players. Nobody has six players of that same top caliber. Most have at most three that are either used together on one top power line or split up across the two decent lines (often changing that during the game.) We have maybe one (Vanek, when he wants to be), a few of the next level and a couple that shouldn't even be there.

He plays hard every game, he's great in our own end, puts up points, and contrary to popular opinion, he doesn't lose the puck any more than any other center. He also plays every game. For someone not so big, he's pretty rugged.

PRO's- plays hard every game, great in our own end, good penalty killer and puts up points.

CON's- he has more unforced errors/passes/turnovers than anyone on the team. just another little guy who is built for the regular season and gets out muscled in the playoffs all day long.

CONCLUSION- not worth $4 million, get rid of him. i can replace him with two other little guys who are better and cheaper (ennis & gerbe).

i understand - i get the desire to move away from the style of lineup that fairly flourished here from 2005-2007 and toward a more rugged and accountable lineup.

i also think that roy could be a top-6 forward on a cup-winning team.

Derek stays in my view, but i wont be too easy going on reviewing him next season.

I think he can provide a good amount of offense, especially as a #2 center. He's shown it before. As stated above

Pros:

He has great playmaking ability, his passing (when its on) and vision are very, very good (perhaps amongst the top 20 to 15 centermans in the league?). Good speed, and agility. He has a good sense of durability to his game, which is a plus. His shot leaves a little more to be had, but its good enough. Not much velocity behind it, but better accuracy as a result. Pretty good defensivly, particularly his stick work, and stick positioning.

The problem is, he is a catlyst for the "cutesy" plays that lead to turnovers.

Cons:

Lack of mental focus. Over thinking when it comes to passing (which negates his passing ability slightly)

I think Derek has more to offer that both Connolly and Pominville

Plus his contract isn't too bad.

Roy basically is an average number 1 center, and a great number 2.

Roy scored a lot of Overtime winners this season (3?) Roy would be a better player with better players around him, but he's small and attracts a lot of attention from the other team. I hope Cellino and Barnes sponsors a different player next season...
