static70 Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 This kid is absolutely what I would like to see here in Buffalo. Any one else like this kid and if so, what are your offers, he is an RFA this off season.

Eleven Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 Why bother? Really? We can save about 1,000 threads by just admitting nothing is going to change. So there's no reason to post until September for you, then, huh? Come on, it's fun to discuss this stuff. And I'll take Backstrom in a second.
notwoz Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 Why bother? Really? We can save about 1,000 threads by just admitting nothing is going to change. If we did that, they might as well shut the whole board down. But since we're still open for business, I'll throw my two cents in: I'd like to see Backstrom wearing the blue & gold

And I'll take Backstrom in a second. I try keep the conversation realistic. Why start with Backstrom? Start at the top with Ovi and Crosby. Maybe offer Connolly straight up?
Panic Prone Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 Great thought but don't think it'll happen.
Dave Dryden Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 I try keep the conversation realistic. Why start with Backstrom? Start at the top with Ovi and Crosby. Maybe offer Connolly straight up? You might get Backstrom for Myers. Short of that, it's a pipe dream, I agree.
deluca67 Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 You might get Backstrom for Myers. Short of that, it's a pipe dream, I agree. Backstrom is a RFA, I think compensation is limited to draft picks.
Dave Dryden Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 Backstrom is a RFA, I think compensation is limited to draft picks. They can trade him if they want. If we signed him as an RFA AND they don't match or work out a trade, I believe it likely would be four first round draft picks. None of this is going to happen, as you suggest. Might as well ask for Jessica Biel and Carrie Underwood as ice girls, while we're at it.

Any one else like this kid and if so, what are your offers, he is an RFA this off season. I dont think the Caps want him either. And i'm pretty sure we have 7 million plus in cap space to sign him. Sarcasm / off But really though, IMO opinion Backstrom is a top 3 center in the league. The kid is a wizard.

And I'll take Backstrom in a second. I hardly posted all season....Nothing changed really from the last 3 yrs besides theyre goalie came of age... :nana:
LabattBlue Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 Any one else like this kid and if so, what are your offers, he is an RFA this off season. I love to propose trades in the offseason, but I try to be somewhat realistic. He was a 100+ point player at the age of 22 and has had a huge jump in production each season of his young career. Backstrom is as untouchable as they come.
will Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 isn't he worth the 4 first rounders? give it a shot, and see how competitive the caps become when they're paying two guys nearly 30% of their payroll (if you figure a $7mil+ cap hit for nick). the downside is, buffalo gets a franchise center they've desperately needed since lafontaine departed. sure, darcy becomes the next kevin lowe, but hey...at least he shows the sabrespace posters he's got a pair. it ain't no pipe dream.

Adding him would only improve the team (obviously i hope they make some other moves as well, what im saying is youre adding Backstrom without LOSING any of our own talent.) and it's not like we'd be losing four Top 10 picks, as I expect the Sabres to be competitive the next several year. obviously I realize this scenario is very unlikely, but Darcy really should pursue options like this. I took a very brief look at upcoming free agents, and outside of the obvious (Kovalchuk, Marleau) there's only a few guys that were that appealing to me.. Matt Cullen being probably the best.
Realist Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 As much as I would love to have Backstrom, Washington will re-sign him.
will Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 you're right, they probably will. the flip-side of my point is that with $16-17mil/yr tied up in two players, the caps will start shedding some valuable talent/salaries just to field a full squad. they'll become the next tampa bay lightning, and ovie will become the next ray bourque...maybe winning a cup when he signs his next/last contract in his twilight years with an established powerhouse team for one year...if he hasn't bolted for the khl by then out of frustration.
will Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 cullen hasn't broken 50pts since entering the league, and you wanna drop $5mil on that?! backstrom hasn't scored less than 69pts in all three years he's been playing. i know he's had ovie to feed and what-not, but it's not like cullen's been on an island in his 13 seasons. i'm not in the habit of telling people what they need, but the sabres NEED a legit #1. there's no getting around that, and backstrom has it all...size, touch, hasn't missed a game, and not to mention the fact that he's got 11 years on cullen. he's the next mats sundin. and it's not like signing the kid to a contract that saddles buffalo with another $7mil/yr cap hit is crippling, especially if we're talking about shedding TC and/or hank/lydman in favor of these kids coming up. my only concern is myers getting plucked if darcy sits on his hands too long. as for losing the 4 first rounders, who cares? anything out of the top 5 is a crap-shoot it seems, and if the team keeps making the playoffs, it'll be a moot point anyway. all that said, i doubt darcy even considers it. but it sure is fun to talk about, eh!?
carpandean Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 I'll take Cullen for $5 million Alex... Has he really earned a 78% raise? His numbers in the past few years aren't than different than they were when he signed for $2.85 million per and now he's older. I might take him for a couple years at maybe $3.5 million per.

will Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 i don't think he was saying he would rather have Cullen than Backstrom. it's just 100x more likely, and still a stretch. agreed. and the $3mil/yr makes a LOT more sense. but this discussion has got me thinking...the caps have put themselves in a position to be hog-tied by what was deemed a pretty sensible contract if i remember correctly. over the years, as they bring up talent that appears to be panning out (backstrom), how can they hang onto them? if any GM with cap space and a backbone makes a go for him, what choice to they have?! if anything, kevin lowe and whomever goes after backstrom will only serve the better good of the nhl by making other GMs reconsider these long term $9mil contracts. all this looking around at other teams' rosters and money figures reminds me how utterly stacked pittsburgh is up the middle. staal, crosby, malkin...20, 21, and 22 years old, all signed through the next three seasons. holy poop.

Matt Cullen centering Kennedy and Grier or Kennedy and Gerbe. YES PLEASE! Matt Cullen as a line 1 center, no thank you.
