BillHoppe Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 Rivet's having shoulder surgery soon. He's out 4-6 months and the start of training camp. He played with it the entire year. That could explain his not-so-hot season.
Mbossy Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 and so it starts. Now what about Stafford, Connolly, Goose...

VansTheMans Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 Did you say 9-12 months?  If Rivet needed it, he shoulda just had it done during the season. Not like he was a crucial part of our defensive corp.

Um, that would have put both Butler and Sekera in full time. While Rivet hasn't been great, he's better than those two combined.

It's good to have experience, yes. But would I rather play a crippled vet, or allow a younger play to grow and develop with the team? Dunno. That's a judgement call for the coach I suppose. I'm not sure when he sustained the injury, but his play had been very poor all year long. I'm thinking his shoulder injury had little to do with his legs seemingly falling off this season.
inkman Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 Meh, that time table should have him back for training camp.

biodork Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 Connolly's foot was broken. Seriously? I thought they had said it was "severely bruised" from blocking a shot towards the end of the regular season (or something like that)? I know Crosby played with a broken toe the one year but yikes, I don't know how you could even put on a skate if your foot is broken!

I'm no doctor but some are weight-bearing and some are not.

LabattBlue Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 Does a bad shoulder make you skate slowly? <_< WISH HIM WELL AND BUY HIM OUT!
26CornerBlitz Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 Connolly's foot was broken. Translation: Someone should have broken their foot off in Connolloy's a$$!!

Bill, thanks for the updates (all season long). Purely out of curiosity, do you think that had Vanek continued to be able to play or if Hecht had come back, would Lindy have sat Timmy in any of games 3-5? The foot was clearly bothering him in the 1st 5 games, but he seemed to be skating a bit stronger in game 6. (His errors in game 6 were mental rather than physical.) He actually won a couple of battles along the boards, but had the painfully dumb crosscheck to start the 2nd. (It was a weak call, but Timmy can't give the ref the opportunity to make that call, IMHO.)

tulax Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 Before we advocate ripping the C off this guy's sweater, I'd at least like to say something on Rivet's behalf. I don't think Rivet gets enough credit for coming in here during the first training camp and being anointed captain. After a move across the country and going through the process of getting acclimated to a new city and organization, I don't think any of us would say that it was fair that he was thrust into becoming the leader for the club. I think he has taken it in stride, and with news of this injury that he received in Nov. 2008 (!), has shown the grit and tenacity that so many feel this team is lacking. His play has slipped considerably, however, I respect a guy that still fights and battles for his teammates on a nightly basis when one of his shoulders is in need of surgical repair.

Did he cash the checks? Every player that has worn a Sabres jersey and sucked had some ###### and bull story to go with it. He was brought in to do a job and failed.
Taro T Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 He broke his foot yesterday  The excuse machine is just leaving the station and is full with passengers. Are you really that friggin' non-observant? The guy clearly was having problems pushing off through the 1st 5 games. (And yes, I am being serious.) Does it change the fact that he needed to find a way to contribute even w/ the foot? No. Should Lindy have benched him because of the foot? Hindsight being 20-20, yes. Would I have benched him? Definitely after game 4, maybe earlier than that.

Did anyone mention the skating? I don't read every post so if you could please point it out. I would imagine it to be a bigger topic prior to this.

He was brought in to do a job and failed. Has he failed a job or just failed the unrealistic expectations of another delusional sports fan? Craig Rivet wasn't brought in to put up 50 points and play 30 minutes a game. He was brought in to provide grit and leadership to a team that needed it on its blue line. For me he has done both of those things. Hes definitely lost speed and his stats have slipped. With an injury to a shoulder requiring 4 to 6 months of rehab I would say that most players' stats would drop.

This season one of the biggest complaints was the lack of leadership. What did he ever really bring?
carpandean Posted April 29, 2010 Report Posted April 29, 2010 The excuse machine is just leaving the station and is full with passengers. To his credit, he said it didn't affect his play or even cause him pain during the series. He put it all on himself.
