hopeleslyobvious Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 Seeing that we have back to back games this weekend, Miller is probably going to start one and Biron the other. Miller is not coming off his best performance of the year, so here is what I think. Start Miller Saturday. Philly is a big game. Show him we still have confidence in him despite a poor performance. Plus, he has played great against Philly this year, and give Biron the start Sunday against Boston. Thoughts?

Philly is much tougher to beat than Boston and Marty did well in his last start against Boston. You're right as usual Hopeless.

Stoner Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I agree. Miller in Philly, Marty against Boston. Miller's game seems to be showing some chinks, but the last thing Lindy needs is a goaltender controversy -- for example, Marty getting the start in Philly and serving up a 45-save shutout or something. Miller's the man. But he's going to need some rest. Tricky for Lindy.

The goal that deflected off Drury would have beat anyone, and was kind of fluky. Take that one away and he was 90% on save percentage. He didn't give up anything that I thought was soft. (unlike, Burke on Vanek's shot)
Stoner Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I don't think you can ignore "fluky goals" when evaluating a goaltender's performance. It's his job to stop the puck. Period. That's the Jim Lorentz school of analysis. "(Insert name of Sabre goaltender) had no chance." If we're going to do that, then we have to not count any save that was also "fluky," like a puck just hitting a down and out goalie. Of course, in the world of Lorentz, this is a "miraculous save." Bottom line -- last seven games, Miller is a touch over 3.00 for a GAA and a touch under .900 for a save percentage. I don't think anyone is worrying too much yet.

Again I'm biased towards Miller, but I think this is exactly why it's a goals against average, and a save percentage. It takes into account that he's going to have some off nights, and maybe even a few in a row. But in the end, I am still very confident with him in net. Also, it should be pointed out, despite not having his best night of the year, he still made a few saves that he had no business making. :D

I know that it can't be factored out of the equation, I just meant to say that last night was no disaster. He still saved .875. Not his best night, but I don't think he let anyone down. Wins are probably underated when it come to goaltenders.
meet_me_at_the_zoo Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 Miller is wearing down after a long season. Neither one of these two have ever played in May and my guess is they won't be playing too long. Sabres played against horrible goalies last night, that won't happen in playoffs.

Sabres played against horrible goalies last night, that won't happen in playoffs. You ever watch Esche? Last time I checked TB was in 7th in the East. Are Grahame and Burke going to magically get better before the playoffs? Huet, Gerber, and Lundqvist suffer from the same problems you cite for Marty and Ryan. What are your thoughts about Emery? See my comments on Esche and Huet for my thoughts about him. Should Atlanta beat out Moe-ray-aal or the Bolts, their goaltending doesn't scare me. That basically leaves Brodeur and NJ. I guess they can all go home now and stop playing. NJ will have to be the East's rep in the Finals. No one else has a proven veteran starter (unless Hasek recovers soon).

Neither one of these two have ever played in May and my guess is they won't be playing too long. Sabres played against horrible goalies last night, that won't happen in playoffs. I love how people judge a player based on one or even a handfull of games. I seem to remember when the team was slumping on the West Coast swing, a lot of people were predicting doom and gloom. Guess what...the team recovered. Despite Miller not quite yet returning to his pre-olympic form...he's only lost 1 game. Quite honestly, with the condensed schedule, I think we are in great shape going into the playoffs. Some of the older and more experienced goalies (Brodeur) played during the Olympic break. Not getting the 2 weeks off, being older and the fact that the condensed schedule down the stretch is a lot to handle. In this situation I am going to take youth and inexperience, because a young goalie is going to be able to handle the stretch run and the playoffs. I could see someone who is a bit older starting to slow down by the end of the year. Experience only gets you so far. Correct me if I'm wrong, but meet me at the zoo, were't you advocating that the Sabres add more goaltenders? Honestly what kind of message does this send to Miller. "You've had a great year, and despite a slump are still in the top 6 in GAA and SV%, thanks for your service, but we're going to go with someone who is struggling this year because he has a bit more experience than you." No thanks.
